Hey Marcus, I wonder if you might know the answer to this question: Why doesn't the starship dissipate some of its momentum by skipping off of the atmosphere a few times before a full reentry. Wouldn't that reduce the peak temperature and forces on its heat shield?

I love how they have baffles on the downcomer pipes to help with main tank sloshing that likely also serve as a form of structural integrity for the pipes themselves. Just the practice of SpaceX engineering where they try to combine or eliminate parts altogether is beautiful.
@ajctrading9 күн бұрын
Yeah, space X eliminating the need for a proper flame trench was brilliant as flight 1 abley demonstrated as it eliminated a good portion of Texas under that silly orbital launch mount
@Nuke-MarsX9 күн бұрын
@@ajctradingWhat's the point of your comment
@TheNheg669 күн бұрын
If you're talking about the ship downcomers then the "baffles" have almost certainly nothing to do with sloshing and everything to do with the structural integrity of the downcomers - they prevent the downcomer from collapsing on itself in the case of a pressure differential between the oxygen tank and the inside of the downcomer.
@Sundablakr9 күн бұрын

The graphic at 10:06 really shows how much SpaceX has moved those front flaps. I wonder if this design also makes it easier to maintain stability, since any roll will bring a flap more into the airstream and thus push the Starship to roll in the opposite direction. (Similar to why most airplane wings are slightly tilted up - called a dihedral.)

Yes. The V2 was a huge advancement in rocketry and paved the way for future manned flight development. IMHO we can recognize that Nazi Germany was an evil Socialist empire, and still applaud the research and development done by the great scientists, who had no choice in the matter, but only wanted to do the work they dedicated their lives to. Certainly, we advance on the knowledge of our predecessors, regardless of our chosen field.
