9:40 Nice one - that was me when I used to be a drinker! Big Sky is €495 in my part of the world - for that cash you can throw in a Behringer Oddy with the Valhalla and ramp up the phaser on it's internal effects for free :). I have been seriously tempted by the Big Sky many times or the Ventris but the only one I stil hanker after is the GFI Specular Tempus - more to do with the quality and quantity of both delay and reverb algorithms on that unit (and it's priced more competitively too) but always seems to be sold out - I guess that's for a reason.

I have been very happy with Source Audio's Ventris dual reverbs for several years and I can't tell the difference between its shimmer and either of the other hardware or plug-ins! But, making music and videos is just a hobby for me. IMO, $50 is way too much for a single reverb plug-in. And it's $200 if you want to buy 4 different reverbs? For $200 you can buy Strymon BigSky Reverb Plug-in and get a total of 12 reverbs with many more options too! If Valhalla wants to remain competitive they must reduce their prices by half! Besides, there are many free versions of shimmers available that once in the mix they blend in just as well for the average listener...for free!

Helpful review. Seems like most agree the Big Sky sounds better especially noticeable in the first couple of basic reverb comparisons. The Big Sky is denser, richer, more baked in, and more transparent I suppose. The plug in in those examples has a metallic wobble and thinner reverb. It seems the plug in shines, no pun intended, as you start to compare the extra effects added in. I'd keep your Big Sky around so you can insert that when you want its sound, and use the plug in when you want the effects added in, which are comparable and useable. Plus if used traditionally in a aux send/receive set up on say an old classic analog console, you can have access to the Big Sky lush reverb on all of your inputs as needed. Sold me on the Big Sky in this comparison. Thanks!

To be honest I don't have one synthesizer that I paid $500 for. I'd love to have bigger synthesizers with more capabilities the same as I'd love to have something like Big Sky but budget is a factor for me and THANK GOD we live in an era where you don't have to shell out thousands of dollars to get into synths or electronic music. If it weren't for manufacturers putting out amazing products for the budget conscious musicians, a lot of people like me would either be using crap or nothing at all. @Screaming-Trees5 жыл бұрын
@@AlainHubert Which DA? I agree with your sentiment by the way. BigSky does sound better. I wonder if it's in the settings however or if it's the algorithm. The reason I ask about the DA and monitors is that most people monitor on shit. Prosumer grade DA and middle of the road monitors. In my experience most people have poor monitoring conditions. Moreover there is a barrier in pro audio monitoring and unfortunately it's not good news for most. If you want truly high quality, full range monitors you're looking at 10 grand USD. There is no way around that really. The only brand I can think of that comes close at about 5k is Neumann (basically a combination of KH120A and 2x KH805 subs; those Neumann subs are phenomenal by the way.). Everything else is about 10k (Barefoots, PSI, Geithain, ATC etc all 10k and above). Then there's the DA. It's all shit pretty much except things like Crane Song or Prism or Mytek or Lavry and a few others. For monitoring I mean. Problem is the aforementioned are really expensive. Most people don't want to spend 15k for Geithain 901k and another 3k for two channels of Crane Song DA. But there is a huge difference in monitoring quality between the 10k price point and everything else. Regarding the reverbs on hand the BigSky is clearly a nicer sounding tail. Insofar as software reverbs go perhaps Shimmer is outdone by Eventide (Blackhole comes to mind but so does their Mangleverb and H3000) as well as Exponential Audio R4. The R4 rivals a Bricasti but it's not cheap. Shimmer is a good value for money product though and I wonder, as I say, how much of the comparison today is in the settings rather than the algorithm.
