My brother, this is gonna be so stupid long but please just hear me out: *commencing over the top praise* (lol) this video just helped me SOOO friggin much!!! It's almost 7am over here and I've been pulling my hair out trying to understand a few little things with this synth, not only for some hours today/tonight but the last couple of WEEKS (since I got it basically) AND YOU JUST EXPLAINED IT ALL PERFECTLY! I'm still a bit of a novice as I've only been doing this a few years now (been watching/commenting for those years too, not sure if you'll recognize my handle/name, genuinely no worries if not friend I know you get a LOT of viewers/comments lol I digress:) and I'm embarrassed to admit I've sorta struggled to TRULY understand many of these general concepts (even with it's simplicity and a lab full of synths with a few years of studying/tinkering, I was still confused/lost). But for some reason dude, something about THIS synth combined with YOUR demonstration and the other tidbits of info I've collected over the years (a lot from you btw) I now FULLY understand not only the 800 but analog subtractive synthesis IN GENERAL! EVERYTHING STARSKY! EVERYYYTHINGGGG hahaha!!!!! ("...I Know Kung-Fu..." - The Matrix) YOU JUST MADE MY BRAIN "CRACK THE CODE", connect ALL of the dots and fill in ALL the blanks! NOW IT ALL CLICKS!!!! I could do backflips out of excitement right now!!! This demonstration is SO perfectly straight-forward/informative/intuitive it made me realize how SIMPLE it really truly is! I'm terrible at learning from manuals (ofc I read them but still I'm always left scratching my head at some points) and dude, for some reason, the way YOU explain this stuff verbally/visually ACTUALLY works for me (as opposed to just reading it)! I think I've left you a high praise comment before (don't even get me started on your comparison videos, if this weren't already ridiculously long I'd write paragraphs on just that alone!) but man this video is "IT" (YA MAGNIFICENT MF-ER!!!! lmfao)!!!! I'm SO sorry for this novel and being wildly "extra" but I NEEDED to give you that validation/respect! Like I NEED you to understand how much you just helped me my dude, I cannot express my gratitude enough! I'm sure you mostly just do this for fun but I want you to know how helpful this sort of thing is for people! You deserve WAY more than 50k subs fam, you should be one of THE BIGGEST faces of synths in general! I hope you get sponsorships from EVERYONE! Your passion/love for this realm shines in your presentations/videos and it's CRAZY infectious/inspiring! Nobody is more deserving! Thanks again man and much love from Florida (USA)! P.S. dude, do you have any merch? I'd love to buy a shirt or mug or SOMETHIN'! I dunno I just need some Starsky Carr swag in muh life/studio now lol also just to add as a side note: your jams are way dope dude js, straight BANGERS every single time! aight I'm gonna piss off now and make some music! So sorry again lmao - Audrey Azwell

I have not seen it being an issue with their hardware Synths at all. You would hear a lot more from users of it being a mass issue. It isn't! Just about every "classic" analog Synth manufacturer are vastly overpriced. By several times the price! A person who buys a Prophet, an Oberheim or a Moog buys into the brand, exactly like a person buys a Gucci or whatever fashion item does. They get a status item. And that is fine if you have the money! Often they are bigger and sometimes the knobs is easier to turn "fine tune" into a sound. But that is about it! But at the same time they take up much extra needed space. And the at the bigger size, Behringer easily could make a replica that still is several times cheaper and sounds the same.

They are pretty decent at least a 6 or maybe a 7 out of 10 they are not quite 8 voices of a pro 1, there seems to be a little roll of in the lower mids and a little in the bass but it sounds pretty thick and fuller sounding compared to the Deepmind so its Behringers best poly synth in my opinion. It's a no-brainer for the price but the Dreadbox Nymphes is still the best midrange Analogue poly synth soundwise which can be picked up for around the same price if you look around, the Alpha Juno 1 is also a better option as well.

I just discovered that it's possible to switch between the presets more quickly without having to press the numbers on the program select pad. I control my PRO-800 using a cheap Yamaha PSR-240 keyboard via MIDI. When you select a preset on the PSR-240, a preset on the PRO-800 is also selected. The PSR-240 can scroll much faster through all the presets on the PRO-800 by pushing the simple left and right preset buttons provided on the PSR-240. It's likely this can be achieved with many other keyboards with similar preset functions.

I've used a fair few music retailers over the decades. In modern times some have been spotty or downright awful. Andertons were one that was dreadful for me in ordering as they'd continually lie about dates something was coming in. When I decided to try Thomann out I never went back frankly. They're now my go to for most things as they're incredibly reliable. And if something does go wrong, they fix it quickly. So I agree they're well worth supporting.

@@volt7cooltangs701 You're completely missing the point. They are good in some respects but this is an area they're not. It has nothing to do with stuff coming in. It's about LYING. When you order stuff and they tell you it's next week it's coming in, yet you contact the manufacturer and they tell you, no it's a problem and it's not going to be for some weeks. So you ring Anderton's again and they tell you again "next week". ayup fella, great work - massive congrats on the Thomann help and it's coming mate, you are doing the work so it's coming. Anyway, the FW anomaly you speak of is this: the encoder (as it stands right now ..... . ) remembers the last function used, so if you were in sync and you leave to main screen mode when you turn the encoder you are actually turning the sync page - hope that helps. Not really an anomaly, just a way of working - i usually leave mine in unison detune or voice spread so i know i can wonk out whenever i like - i have seen people complaining things don't work when in fact after i dig a little bit i showed them they have adjusted the menu and unwillingly continued after the fact. Could be argued it is daft but i think the opposite, i like it as it leaves a performance function open without the need for a menu.

Just uploaded the latest firmware today... Is it my ears but has this transformed the sound of this synth? To my ears, now sounds even thicker and beefier. Unbelievable that Behringer have been so quick off the mark with these firmware updates

It’s just changed the env amount per patch which will do exactly that. Which is the reason I was disappointed originally.

Apart from the digital programing and polyphony, has the Pro-800 the same sound engine as Pro-1? thank you!
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The pro- 1 is a single voice of the prophet 5 but with some added drive into the filter. The architecture in this is so similar as to be the same - but I think there are minor differences in the filter (different chip as far as I know but similar) and the drive - you can drive e a mini more as you’ve only the single voice.

The Pro one has a different sound. Not just the filter, also the VCOs. Whatever knobs I turn, it sounds like Vince Clark is using it.
@subconscious.com_usa6691 Жыл бұрын
Yes but its seems that the lower mids and the bass has been rolled off slightly in my opinion for polyphony, the oscillators are nowhere near as fat as the pro One's oscillator its definitely not fully blown 8 voices of the pro one. It would be ridiculously good if it was but its fat enough anyway so it doesn't matter that much.

Thanks Starsky, great overview (& I’m sure your previous comparison was a factor in B hurrying up & improving the firmware). Watching/ hearing this I’m going to say a stupidly obvious thing- I really can’t understand why DSI/ sequential didn’t do something like this? Ok they’d never do same price point but really don’t understand why, for decades, they stuck to their (not as good) DCO sound & didn’t go with much better sounding Prophet 5 based synths?

i wish, copy/paste and also save would be possible from bank to bank (and a compare would also be nice). And the second thing is the random function. If it worked from a little variations over fairly new sound to complete r2d2, it would be much more helpful.

If you use a unison mode on an analog synth like this one, you’d have some outstanding bass and leads. Depends if you need two synths in a live format.

This thing is beyond a great deal. The only criticism I have is the old school remote style buttons. I've seen more than a few of that type of button covering get old, wear, and crack/detach. I get that they're trying to get the Prophet 600 look, but I have to wonder how many years of use is there. I imagine that they're not going to wear is well as the Prophets do, but I could be wrong. Either way, there's a lot here for a small investment.

Even if it looks like membrane buttons, it's actually real buttons underneath, so it should have a lot less problems with reliability than the original.

The filter amount thing seems such an obvious oversight, releasing it with that tiny max amount. They've been developing this for years and only NOW they notice this? Well I'm glad they changed it now.
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
I think they left it low so you could introduce additional modulation via velocity or aftertouch, but it didn’t work for me … or anyone else as far as I can tell. Hence the easy and very welcome fix.

@15:19 you demonstrate the different oscillator modes, Oct, Semi, F.hd and Free. Have you noticed the tuning change on the corresponding oscillator? with both oscillator levels up set osc A to F.hd and on mine the pitch of B will change randomly! There is nothinh in the manual that say what F.hd is, I am sure this is either a bug or faulty. Cheers

f.hd means fixed... I wonder if B changing is due to movement .. like the knob is slipping for example?

Sounds great. Do you notice a big difference between the sound of all the Behringer synths you have or are many more minor, subtle sonic differences, or it's more about slight differences in features?
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
A lot of them use the same filter chip as Behringer now manufacture the CEM but then again so did the Prophet 5, Oberheim OBXa, Fairlight, PPG, pro-one etc … so there’s a fair amount of variation you can get from similar or the same parts. I don’t think they sound generic if that’s what you’re asking. .. but if I got a load of sequential stuff together you’d probably hear similarities there. So a bit of yes and no I guess! But leaning more to the no :)

Great review! Glad the firmware update fixed the envelope issue (though saw the reason for the "issue" in the video). Quick question - with your experience with Sequential products and real vintage instruments, how good does it do in giving the "vintage vibe" without a "vintage knob/mode"? Sounding awfully darn close to an original P 600 in single notes, etc. does not necessarily mean it has that character when played...
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
There may be no vintage knob but there’s a ‘slip’ mode in the ‘voice spread’ and unison detune parameters. Overall it does give the vibe if not identical (what 2 40 year old synths are?). It’s not quite as dirty as the filter on mine at least but I see that as the difference in 2 synths. I think I mention my 2 Polysix video in one of these. Both Korg vintage units and have similar but individual characters.
