It's like the UK... we're very happy to not be at war with Russia, and hope that state of affairs continues. However, our 'special supply and assistance operation' won't stop, and may well increase unless/until Ruzzia withdraws from all Ukrainian territory. We're British, so get embarrassed about giving our vehicles and kit grandiose names... our MBTs are 'Challengers' not 'Champions'. But it looks like our 'Storm Shadow' missiles sneaked past that rule, what with their stealth being a thing they have on top of their speed and precision and 450kg warheads. And the French joined in.... calling them SCALP, for Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée. The Black Sea fleet will need wigs if even a dozen of them are given to Ukraine, and every Ruzzian admiral that likes being able to skim some graft from their fleet having ships can spot that 'having ships' is a key component of their business-model.

To add to this: -Another thing to note about Zelenskyy is that his hometown of Kryviy Rih is mostly Russian-speaking (like most Ukrainian cities before 2022), and I vaguely remember reading somewhere (In the Kyiv Independent I think) that he had to brush up on his Ukrainian during his run for office. Don't quote me on that last part though. -The idea that the US put top-secret laboratories on the border of an adversarial power, where they could be easily infiltrated by Russian spies, disguised as medical research facilities under surveillance by international regulators, is ridiculous. And knowing how viruses spread and mutate, a virus meant to infect only Russians would make no distinction between Russians and other Slavs. -As for the "coup" conspiracy about the Maidan, a coup is defined as an illegal seizure of power via force or subversion. People who believe in this conspiracy leave out the fact that Yanukovych, was legally removed with an impeachment proceeding with nearly 85% of Ukrainian parliament voting in favor of it after he ordered police to gun down like 100 people. There is no way that external NGOs or meddling foreign governments got *that many* people to show up and protest, and the majority of a country's parliament to legally impeach a sitting president. This isn't even touching up on Yanukovych's long list of abuses. -NATO never codified its verbal promises to the Soviet Union in OFFICIAL TREATIES that WERE SIGNED BY RUSSIA. And if they were actually barred from joining, E. Europe would have formed its own security bloc that would be de facto aligned with NATO anyway. After half a century of Soviet occupation, and then watching Russia stomp on Moldova, Georgia, and Chechnya, you can't blame us Europoors for seeking out a new sphere of influence. Plus, Putin was interested in joining NATO early in his term, and was even sending Russian troops to train alongside NATO forces, and signed gas and oil deals that tied much of Europe at the hip to Russia. He voluntarily made a choice to see NATO as his enemy and invade Georgia even as relations were warming up. -If you look at the military budgets of most former Warsaw pact countries that joined NATO, they do not have the capacity to carry out a successful invasion of Russia. Also, none of those countries host nuclear weapons. And what would NATO gain from invading Russia, anyway? Invading Russia from the west has historically ended disastrously. Basically, Russia got their lil fee fees hurt. They could have become an economic superpower and beat "The West" at its own game and proven NATO didn't need to exist anymore, but no. In the words of AlternateHistoryHub, "You don't start wars over verbal agreements that happened before most of your troops were even born."

There were no "promises" in the first place. Someone who had nothing to do with the negotiations only suggested something like that, but that person had no negotiating power. It could just as well been the toilet lady. NATO on the other hand has always said that any joining of Ukraine to NATO wasn't feasible and it would take 10's of years for them to be ready, not to mention that all countries need to agree which definately was not the case at the time. Furthermore NATO does not, has never done and never will seek any influence anywhere. It is a defensive organisation and countries can join if the fall within the definition of NATO. There was much discussion on whether Russia could join, when they applied at the same time as Ukraine and Georgia, but they were let in at the NATO meetings and as you said even had joint training sessions. Putin always had a plan to undermine NATO from the beginning and since his plans didn't work out from inside, he eventually made himself impossible with the invasion of Georgia and was expelled. The gas, oil and coal deals had nothing to do with that, but were a seperate operation indeed to tie Europe to Russia in order to eventually extort and blackmail Europe. Since large quantities were being found in Ukraine and around the periode of the Revolution of Dignity were making plans to exploit those riches, Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 by proxy of soldiers on vacation and after it had amassed a lot of them at Ukraines borders. All under the guise of Russian speaking people being discriminated against, which was never true. The plans were then abandoned because they were deemed impossible at the time. In late 2021, early 2022 the plans were taken out of the draw again, but after Nord Stream 2 was axed by the Germans two days later they invaded Ukraine again. But now with the regular army, under a stupid guise of "special military operation" whith the intent to wipe Ukraine of the face of the earth. If they would have succeded then this would have caused Russia to border not 5 countries, but 9 directly. Which is why he has been going on that NATO should retreat from all eastern European countries, so he would be free to invade those in the future. That Ukraine is saying that it is fighting and protecting the whole of Europe is NOT just a marketing ploy to get more weapons, but a real thing that is a profound threat to all of us. Your piece was riddled with "alternative facts" and Russian propaganda, so I had to set this piece straight. The rest is fairly to the mark. Always beware how Russian propaganda works, it keeps at it until the other side takes over it's narrative, which sadly has happened on this piece of the story. There's a whole bunch of people even on governments level that have taken this over. They have sadly never looked any further and taken it for granted.

As for having Russian bases at your door, I'm not American, but European and we have had Russian bases at our door since the 50's on an enduring basis. With missiles aimed at us. So, what's your point? The Rand paper aims at America as a sole country, not NATO. Furthermore it was published before the invasion in Ukraine, in 2019 and was probably aimed more at Trump then anything else. It is already hopelessly outdated by the invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The stuff about energy is somewhat funny. It's more a commercial thing. Sure America is earning money from us for extra imported fuel, but that's only temperary since Europe has stepped up it's own goals and wishes to be fuel import free in 8 to 13 years. My country has had this year several weeks of more reversed income to customers than they recieved. And that is only expected to grow each year. We are miles ahead in this field from America. Russia on the other hand wanted dominance over the European market and we've had some corrupt, mostly German, politicians that helped them in that in exchange for personal deals. They were simply selling us out (which is the reason why Germany has been so hesitant in their support for Ukraine) and this has now fallen through. And Russia won't get the chance for their original plan to extort and blackmail Europe (they are trying, but it's not working). So what you are writing doesn't make any sense at all. You are tying things together that have nothing to do with each other and the Rand paper is simply outdated and it nothing more than a think tank. It doesn't handle American foreign policy, only advises. The fun part of it is that I know several people that are being mentioned and cited. I often disagree with them and often it turns out that I was right. I do my own research and never take things for granted. So your last sentence is totally out of place.

I think even if they knew, at this point they believe too strongly that they are fighting fascists/defending the mother/fatherland. I’ve watched enough 1420 videos to understand that (and to nearly drive me insane!)
