As someone who was a 13 year old girl when the movie came out I can tell you why it was so popular. Despite the record breaking cringe I (and thousands of others) was obsessed with the dream of run into a “star” and falling in love. We were a bunch of love sick preteens drunk on fanfics. I personally watched this movie at least three times cringing the whole way through.
