This video is for those who are questioning shooting in 24 or 30 fps, and to spark the idea of shooting youtube videos in 30 fps instead of the "cooler" 24 fps!
I know I know you're a "filmmaker"! I get it I totally do! I also identify as one as well, but these days, unless we are actually making a short film, where no one looks into the camera lens, then for the reasons I stated (and some I didn't) I suggest shooting in 30 fps! Crazy right?! I know.
I hope you truly hear me out and question, just because you CAN shoot 24 fps, doesn't mean you SHOULD!
I try to keep it real in the video, I cover both technical point of view as well as the personal & emotional. I still think it's smart to use the frame rates appropriately.
Let me know what you think!

Thank you so much for helping me decide on what frame rate to settle on for KZbin. In particular the 24fps to Show and 30fps to Tell. You presented the argument for in an easy format. 👍

Nicely thought about, Jeff... I've been wanting to try 30fps for a while, (off camera), but when it comes time to shooting, I'm on auto-pilot and just assume 24fps is a 'solid' foundation (much like the rules for 1/180 shutter, WB, etc)... but I'm going to give 30fps a shot. One gets tired of 'specs' & 'rules' from content producers all the time when it comes to filming and story-telling. Thanks for expressing your creativity in this way.

Great video. One thing that is always forgotten in frame rate discussions/explanations is how the film is viewed. If we are talking KZbin as distribution channel we cannot forget that phones, tablets, laptops and other flatscreens are, today, in most cases and independent of where in the world (NTSC/PAL) 30 or 60 hz based. Showing 24 fps on a 30 hz screen will just result in pulldown recreating 6 missing frames for every second adding to any already existing 24 fps stutter…

Great explanation, this is my 4-5th video about the difference between 24vs30 and what is better, and your explanation really resonates The comparison when you trow the phone in the air was massive, with 24 my mind just had to follow the object and costing effort to predict it, while at 30 I could just kind of relax and take the whole frame-size in more, exactly the style I would want for my video's. "24 when the story is shown, 30 when the story is told" - amazing sentence, I'm convinced and finally feel secure to shoot my video's in 30 fps when I start next year. Thanks for the help!

The timing on me finding this post came at the perfect time in my personal learning curve. I really can't thank you enough! You have put to rest something bothering me for about a year since upgrading and returning to videography after being amazed of what I was seeing with mirrorless sensors. The little glitches you speak of seem to never be a hero clip for me but so frustrating when I am wondering why I had to scrap it. Was I the one...glitching? When I added a second body, adding the R6ii as opposed to the smaller hardware of the R8, I thought I would not see the issue but of course am working with new footage that has it in two spots. I literally swapped out every RF lens in the last year in testing and was starting to think I was definitely NOT on to anything as of late. This is the ticket for sure!~ I thought you might find it funny my term for it was "lens warble"....subscribed with joy!

It needs to be mentioned though that what you see there is not true 24fps as it's contained in a 30fps video - it looks more stuttery, less even more specifically, than proper 24fps. But then again, there's no way to properly compare it in one video, at least not unless YT supports 120fps videos, with an even divider for both framerates.

One of my biggest regrets when I started vlogging was listening to all the 24 fps proponents and not using 30 fps right from the beginning. I've had fewer, if any, glitches with 30 fps during editing and none when uploading. It's much easier for me to pull stills from 30 fps, too, especially for thumbnails.

I look forward to that. I'm still a beginner with all these things, so I would appreciate a video like that. Being able to take stills from the video is just one of those ways to reduce friction for me. Creating thumbnails separately from the video itself just feels like a barrier to creation at this point. Be awesome to see your process with video stills.

Yep i think they’re great creators no doubt, but the 24fps can make their motion look upsetting. Not like it’s wrong as i stated, i gave reasons why 30 is BETTER. They could switch, and i bet you they will in the near future too, but that’s another discussion... Point is, when the camera is shaking on a vlog or panning across 24fps doesn’t look right. At all it’s annoying. But if you’re panning in a movie it works because of the relationship. Think about it relative to a song, if you borrow a chord from another key, it works, if you do it right, otherwise you’re better off far more often staying in the key. 30fps is for the viewer a more pleasing feel technically and emotionally...WHEN... the person is talking to the camera. FAR better.

Haha I’m glad the veil has been lifted! Once you get used to 30 FPS, it is like the red pill and you can’t believe everyone doing 24fps for youtube is simply followers not thinking for themselves and looking at evolution. Being unwilling to change is only a detriment to oneself. It’s crazy too especially when you think about how little argument there is for 24fps aside from “it’s more cinematic” but like i said, it’s not. But 24 FPS isn’t bad when used right, same with tunafish, just don’t put it on a burger. Ha!

Very interesting and provocative video. There is so much discussion and dissection of 24 fps versus 30 fps versus 60 fps. Not to mention 23.98 or 29.87. Its seems that 60 fps is more buttery with less dropout. And no one has really definitively solved 24 frames which is more historical vs 30 frames, which makes more sense. It's almost like pixel peeping. It's all in the eye of the beholder. I really can't see significant differences unless really squinting and determine to see the changes. And finally, to be really convincing, with all due respect, you need to show a really alluring and mind blowing video to really appreciate the subtle differences and make your point.

Interesting you can't see the difference. I for one can see it in a heartbeat. But i "feel" it even faster. 60fps to me however doesn't feel buttery, it feels unsettling. I agree the video wasn't mind blowing, but i felt like i did a pretty good job.

Eh So 2 answers 1. Technically it’s a bad idea. If you’re syncing motion blur to shutter speed to fra,e rate then you’d have to increase the shutter speed for 1/60, which means your clamping down on the lift that gets to the sensor so you’ll need a faster lens (expensive) or more iso (noisey) so it will just always make your footage darker than 30fps Second, I think it depend on use and if you like slo mo. I don’t like slo mo so it’s not for me. 60 as mentioned imo is double 30 which is fine but a bit unnatural for the monitors we are viewing on currently. I’d say do it if you want to do what will be the norm in a couple years, but I’m going to see if refresh rates and color bit rate improves first.

@@jeffreybuoncristiano how about always shooting 60fps at 1/60? Then let your project use 30fps at double speed to keep everything looking the same but skipping every other frame...then if you want slow motion, just let it run at 100% speed to get an actual 50% slow-mo...?

Nowadays even some cinema production and TV series are shot on DSLRs/mirrorless at 24 FPS. Usually they are shot on Sony mirrorless (even despite the 8bit color). I don't find an issue with shutter speeds of 1/30-1/50. To cancel the flicker of electricity, you can reduce shutter speed.

Good explanation, I actually also shoot in 30, not 24 or 25 which is EU standard and I also like it more, 60 for example does't look good it looks too plastic, fake and etc, but 30 looks better in my opinion.

I think what people should really do is shoot whatever looks best to them. I prefer 24fps but you do need to be stabilized because any movements are more pronounced. 30fps is basic and does nothing for me visually. 60fps is handy for slowing down videos and still getting that fluidity, that 30fps just can't give you.

When you shoot in 30fps, what timeline do you edit it in 24/30?
@profitglen

I completely agree. However, I am wanting to start filming with a small amount of slo-mo. Therefore, shooting at 30fps and slowing to 80% is 24fps. The problem is then, if I have mixed content such as scenes where I talk, then I have to shoot those in 24fps so it will all match up. So, yes, your theories and testing are correct, but I still need 24fps.

For KZbin videos I agree, it should be 30 or 60 fps for more realism. For story telling, that’s another thing. Not only we are used to watch movies in 24 fps since forever.. but acting may look less convincing at 30 fps. Even good experienced actors could look a bit off because there is too much frame and you’ll notice more subtleties that he couldn’t hide. In a movie/story, less is generally better. Gemini Man has been shot in 120 fps and it shows.. some of the actors look a bit off sometimes. Obviously 30 fps wouldn’t be as intense as 120 fps, but it would still make a difference.

If you shoot at 24fps, and throw it in a 30fps timeline, there is 1frame for every 6 that is duplicated plus one which gets x3. If you throw a 30fps video into a 24 timeline, you strip away 6 frames (once exported out) and the footage can look more choppy due to the lack of frame blur. If your videos are still choppy with 30 in 30, then you are likely slowing your video down below a reasonable threshold which results in the frames showing. I do this all the time because I am trying to slow down footage for a “dreamy” look and was too lazy to record at a higher frame rate.

Keep going with the 30! Love seeing 30. Though I wish more people would play with lowering the shutter speed to 1/40 in order to get back the more natural motion blur. The way I understand it, having your shutter setting set to something doesn't run a separate "shutters per second" thing, it just tells the sensor to collect light for whatever amount of time is set during EACH of the 24, 30, or whatever frames. The problem is once again the "standards" that exist, that being the 180 degree rule sucking. Try your footage with a 1/50 and 1/40 shutter at 30p, see what you think. Also, interestingly, 25fps is also NOT re-coded by YT IIRC because 25p is ACTUAL interger-correct 25fps, unlike 24fps MIGHT be on cameras in NTSC mode that DON'T have separate 24 and 23.976 options. Another thing that can cause the judder-bug is mixing the two up in a timeline. Then it gets double screwed when you mix them up AND THEN upload to youtube. Worst possible "correct" (by assumption) setting would be 24 actual(interger) in a 23.976 timeline uploaded as 24 to YT with a 1/50 shutter. *_puke_* OH, another fun fact. 25p with a 1/40 shutter will shoot correctly regardless of region and you don't have to change camera settings. The 1/40 divides into 120, which is an even multiple of 60hz power lines. And the 25fps divides into the 50hz powerline frequency as per usual. To get that with 30fps you do either a 1/50 shutter or a 1/33.3 shutter (which is a 324 degree angle).

@@jeffreybuoncristiano Thanks dude! I usually sperg out like this all the time, so it's really encouraging to see positive feedback about the things that drive me crazy as opposed to negative. Give the other shutter setting a try for your footage, maybe upload some samples directly comparing them (because god knows finding 30fps test footage or good cinematic shots is damn hard) and see what you think/like. After all my weeks of research and agonizing over filmography questions, I'm just about set in my thinking of 25p-1/40 and 30p-1/50 being the new "baseline" standards to replace 24p-anything and 30p-180deg. And, of course, variables provided (powerline freq and natural vs artificial light being filmed) you can play with the baseline from there. Ninja edit: Forgot to mention, I frickin LOVE your beard, dude. Excellent work, there.

I have a little problem, I shot in 30p and then a couple shots in 25, now I’m editing it in a timeline of 30p, what would you recommend me to safe the final export at the moment of posting it on KZbin and to avoid the problem of the different FPS in a timeline of 30p?
@jeffreybuoncristiano
@jeffreybuoncristiano Жыл бұрын
@@agustinyousef2530 well, the timeline will be whatever framerate you tell it to be, and it doesn't matter what frame rate you put in the timeline, frames are frames for the most part. but depending on your software, you'll either have those shots as looking a little fast, or the software will interpelate new frames to adjust for the incorrect frame rate to the timeline. you probably won't notice unless you're looking. you might just see a stammering look to the few 25fps shots. As far as exporting, i'd export in the timeline frame rate of 30fps. also, I'd take it as a learning lesson to make sure you shoot in the same frame rate next time.
@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster Жыл бұрын
@@agustinyousef2530 What Jeffrey said, though with the caveat that if you tell your software (depending on the software) to "interpret" the 25p footage, I believe THAT'S what will speed it up. Kinda the same as when you throw a higher frame rate into a 30p timeline then "interpret" in order to get slowmo. Bottom line, play with the settings and see what works. I feel like the most natural looking solution would be black frame insertion, which is semi self explanatory. Basically just have your editing software and 5 non-sequential black frames per second to your 25p footage so that there are "30" frames to be played per second, but only 25 of them are actual content. It'll still look like 25p, but it (hopefully) won't do any weird stuttery skippy crap nor be sped up.
