I personally recommend the really short fishing rods. It can deliver a decent sting, is super cheap, and typically has a finger grip so you can practice with other methods of holding your weapon.

@@danielbinns2802looks to be less pourous than a pool noodle, actual pool noodles have a lot of air resistance so they aren’t easy to swing around, and most materials you could maybe put down the middle to help with that would probably make the sword too heavy.

My friends from the SCA introduced me to those. A lot of them make their own from PVC and Pool Noodles. It works pretty well, just make sure you glue them to the pipe. They also wrap the noodle in Duct Tape to increase durability and personalize them.

As a fencer, I suggest you, if you want to start fencing, to find a club, where you can borrow gear for competitions and for trainings. About a year or two into fencing, most people buy their own gear.

I personally like calimacil's weapons for fencing practice. The foam they use is self binding, which means even if the sword is damaged it won't start falling apart. The shape of the weapons is also more accurate, and the weight is really not that far off from the real thing unless you're looking at heavier weapons like warhammers.

I actually got a pair of these with my friends a couple months back and must say, these are great. You can smack full force and barely hurt the other person so long as they’re wearing clothes. It does still sting a bit on bare skin but it’s not that bad at all. This is also assuming full force power swings which won’t usually be a problem while sparring or practicing. Anyways, they feel great, are super durable, and are super fun.

i've made a decent version of this with plastic pipping, foam, and tape from a hardware store. the cost is less than a dollar per sword, and you can put extra material at the tips to make thrusts very safe.

I’ve also found that Dagorhir, a larp system, is a great avenue to fence with people. It’s a little pricier unless you make your weapon yourself, but the foam swords have a minimum weight, so you can work with realistically weighted and balanced swords. Buy-in is maybe $40-80 for weapon ($20-30 in materials if building yourself) and maybe $40-60 for basic garb (non-white tee shirt and non-modern pattern pj bottoms)

this is ironic actually we were just today discussing the exact same thing at my club and how it's what we should recommend to beginners. Personnally though, I'm fine with loaner gear until I upgrade (which I plan to do sometime in the near future). HEMA is really a life saver for me, I haven't been this engrossed in a sport for, like ever. So I don't plan on stopping any time soon. Heck I'm stopping rock climbing partly because that will enable me to do more HEMA

If your willing to put in the time And effort you can make basically the same thing with PVC and some quality foam, glue and tape. Probably won't look super pretty but takes a damn good beating for the money spent. Still curious about the boffer in the vid tho. May look into it

Or, for a lighter version, a graphite golf glub shaft and pool noodle from the dollar tree. Pool noodle breaks down pretty quick tho so while it's cheap, you'll have to make a new sword every few months.

@@ceejaydaniel2287 we use a pipe insulation that is about 2.5 in diameter, so it's about as thick as pool noodle used to be. It's denser so it can hurt more if you're baseball swinging. But at normal force there's not much of a difference.

If I may offer a DIY alternative: 3/4” PVC pipe A pool noodle with a hollow core Duct tape Stick the pipe in the noodle, leaving min. 3” of noodle free at the tip (safer thrusts), and giving yourself ample hilt room. Secure with duct tape. LOTS of duct tape. Wrap the whole dang thing with duct tape; like just about 2/3 roll for a sword (give or take). It’ll look terrible, but it’s bouncy and very safe to use, and you can modify the designs to fit your needs-quillons, pommels, anything-just make sure there’s a lot of foam and no pipe on the stabby areas (that’s the important part). Need to designate the flat of the blade? Carve off a little foam on the sides with a knife (not too much though) I also made a polearm version of this that is really fun.

How to do this at home with no gear needed Materials: Strapping/alien tape Duct tape A PVC pip of desired length -5 inches Pool noodle of desired length -handle length 2 Pennies Electrical tape One cb inch of open squishy foam Edit also needs a knife for the pool noodle and scissors for the tape Steps: Tape pennies to the ends of the pipe with strapping tape or alien tape making a cross then taping the parts of the tape on the surface of the pipe to the pipe in a choke that fully wraps around the pipe 2: take two inches of your pool noodle cut out a piece that’s about two thirds of the full circle as if it were a pizza or pie, then squeeze it tight and wrap strapping tape around it three times one on top one in the middle and one on the bottom this should be the same width as the PVC pipe. 3. Tape the thing you made In part 2 called a thrust tip to your pipe the same way you did with the pennies on the top part of the foam sword. This reduces damage from stabbing attacks. 3. Take off one inch of the pool noodle and put the remaining on your pipe and thrust tip it should be flush with the tip. Tape the top with a cross intersecting on the thrust tip and the bottom with four pieces of tape in a cross going from the pool noodles surface to the pipes surface touching the bottom of the pool noodle then wrap a piece of tape around the pipe where the tape to the pool noodle. 4. Put the cube of squishy foam on top of the thrust tip and tape it with a cross make sure to not tape hard and fold the tape at the edges the cross should connect to the pool noodle. 5 take the last inch of pool noodle not on the sword and cut a hole in it so u can put it on the handle then tape it on with a cross that goes on the surface of the pool noodle 90 degrees from that it should reach the handle wrap tape around the bottom of the handle to secure it 6 put duct tape all over it except for the handle the. Put electrical tape on the handle. The duct tape in the blade should all be vertical and the panel put the tape on the edge then 90 degrees away from that LARP!!! Edit i spent 30 min on this comment plz like Edit 3: for crossguard make a hole the size of your pipe in a pool noodle of desirable size put it on and tape it to the blade and the handle then wrap tape around the handle part

I used to do larp here in Australia and we would order in a bunch of fancy looking larp swords from overseas. Slightly lighter to significantly lighter that real steel (depending on brand), made of a carbon fibre rod core and closed cell foam for shape and impact, sometimes with a latex skin that added colour and detail. Price was higher, for sure, but you didn't need protective equipment.

The foams for sale at purpleheart armory are absolutely fantastic, ive been teaching for 7 years, started with synthetics and I prefer the new foams leagues beyond the synthetics, the main reason actually being because the cloth covers bond very well. I just started a Dussack class and we are using the foams for drilling because they are lighter and keep peoples shoulders good for an entire lesson, they are cheap, and we can use light gear.

I started carving wooden swords for my son and I when he was two and we would play wop sticks as we called it. We tried to hit the sticks not each other. After a while we got better so I bought us a set of these. We're now on our third set and have full-on melees with the neighborhood kids. You can also make torso/arm/leg (and probably neck and hand) protection from old EVA foam floor mats(the puzzle piece mats) absolutely NOT enough for steel swords or accurate weighted synthetics. However it can provide a little protection for boffers or other diy training swords, especially good if your fragile, like me with hypermobility. Just make sure if you make something to protect your chest, add the little ridge near the top that actual plate armor has, it will stop a thrust that hits the chest from getting redirected into your throat. I know because it happened. I was sparring with my friend after i made some, we were sparring with a lightsaber and a diy sword I made from fiberglass rods wrapped in tape. He hit me with a thrust, on contact with the chest piece I made it went straight up and WOULD HAVE went right into my throat(despite wearing a proper HEMA mask) but since I put a piece there it stopped the thrust.

You could also use a PVC pipe, contact cement, and a pool noodle. Just make sure to leave a good two inches or so of the pool noodle without the PVC core for a thrusting tip, otherwise thrusts would hurt like heck

This is an equipment used on what we call "Swordplay". In my group we train all the sparring and techniques with swords like these but also with swords that have a shape of a sword keeping the security in the blade. Swordplay completely removes the need of protective equipment and leaves all of it for the equipment itself

These are called boffer swords. I made a bunch at home for cheap! Get pool noodles and a 1” dowel rods (or whichever fit in the pool noodle snugly) These are good enough for an afternoon of fun with friends. If you want them to last a bit longer, wrap them with cheap electrical tape! I definitely recommend a face mask because you will take face shots even if you try to avoid it!

Going for an even more affordable option, stick a Funnoodle or a piece of pipe insulation (FrostKing works well) on a PVC pipe (or golf club shaft, if you want something light) and weight it appropriately. You might still want a mask if you're planning on striking at the face, maybe a helmet if you're going to practice headshots, but otherwise, no protective equipment is required.

One of my favorites ways to start out was going to a Renaissance Faire and getting a couple foam-ish swords (or whatever material they use I'm not sure), they were like 25 bucks each and hold up pretty well. They also look pretty similar to real swords and have a weight to them to help with getting used to it

You can make a better quality foam sword for $5 each. Get a PVC pipe, one pool noodle, hot glue gun. Cut the pool noodle in half to make it the same size as imbthe video, then hot glue it to the PVC pipe and sandpaper off the writings and stuff, then use knife to make really good grip. At home Depot you can buy a thick PVC pipe (recommended to get a 3/4 size) for $7 then you can cut it in thirds. You can get thick 60in / 5ft pool noodle for $5 each.

I remember carving a grip section into a fence board about as wide as my fist and about as thick as my thumb for sparring with my brother. The balance was ass and the feeling of the strikes resembled being hit with a club or a baseball bat. But it was good strength training at the very least and luckily no one ever broke a bone.

Do you really get the same feel as wielding a longsword or katana if you have barely any weight above the hilt? And how do you practice edge alignment or swing arc with them?

Edge alignment is definitely something I don't get to practice very much, but I do have some real looking sword replicas, toys, but they still look somewhat real. For example, I have a wooden katana and a foam replica of the master sword from the legend of Zelda.

@@Bored_Overthinker Ah, I see. I use a heavy wooden katana as well to practice longsword techniques, good strength training. Then I also have a lighter wooden jian for practicing edge alignment and binding with, paired with a wooden dagger or waterskin (simulating a buckler). Wood is good, there's no suspicion from onlookers about whether your blades are sharp or not then. Although the quarterstaff I practice polearm techniques with can just as well end a life in a single strike I have yet to be stopped by cops while traveling with it. Do you practice outdoors, in a gym or just in the comfort and privacy of your own home?

Foam swords are great for getting people started cheaply. But if you are serious you eventually move to steel. There's just no substitute for something that handles and behaves close to the real thing in blade contact. *Certain people* think you can just stick with foam and learn all there is to swordsmanship and that's just not the case.
