Ive always been a avid reader but I go through spurts where I devour books, then for a few months randomly Ill read literally nothing. What always works for me to get back into my regular reading is I find something light and fun and easily readable and I always grab the audiobook, and eventually I get sucked back in from listening while at work or just doing things around the house. I found this to be so effective.

I started out not liking reading until I found some books that I liked and I could also pick my books. I’ve kept liking reading since then. I just sometimes don’t have as much time and sadly audiobooks don’t really work for me. With videos like these I’m like I can either know what to do if I somehow get in a slump with reading or I can give this advice to someone else who isn’t a big fan of reading

Something I reminded myself a lot of when I got back into reading was that it is okay if you only read a little bit in a sitting. One chapter, or half a chapter, a day is more than I was doing. You get through books surprisingly fast when you realize this!

I'm an avid gamer, but started reading in 2021 with Harry Potter (never read the books before). When I reached book 5 I switched to a Kindle and never looked back. That thing was an absolute game-changer for me! I went on reading 62 last year, with 55 already this year. I never thought of myself as being a reader … that definitely changed. Having a routine also helped, reading at the same time of day for 1-2 hours. It took me a while to find my preferred genres (mostly horror, crime, and thrillers) but other than that it's just part of my life now :D

That is so awesome!! I definitely do find myself reading faster on my NOOK! I think that is because it is easier for me to forget how many pages I have read! Also finding a great book community just like this one really helps to motivate me to want to get back into reading more and restarting manga!

I got back in to reading by basically reading the books in Crash Course Litterature, where you'd read the book and then watch a little video by one of the Greenbrothers talking about the book. I skipped a few books (such as the Odyssey, having read Fry's retellings fairly recently,) and skimmed some I just didn't enjoy much for whatever reason. What I enjoyed about this way was that it gave me a few different types of books, and books I'd probably never have read on my own. It also gave incentive to finish the book to then watch the little video about it. The drawback being that I got this "let's get through this" mentality to reading, which isn't superb. But my overarching focus was to get in to the habit of reading. "Habits make lives", as someone probably said, so spending a month carving the habit of reading and you'll be able to benefit from it for years.

Love this. I realize now that I’ve been missing the social/connection part of reading. We read aloud at home to our three little women who are 5, 3, and 3. It’s always special to chat with them about what we’re reading, but I’d enjoy that sort of dialogue with other adults for my own personal reading too.

Totally agree with reading what you want to read not what you should read. This year I've only been reading fantasy and fairytale books because it's my favourite genre ever and favourite escapism mechanism. Last year, I read few different genres but mostly fancied reading romances and chick flicks, it was a hard year for me and light hearted books was what I needed to stay sane. If I was to read some 'heavy duty' books, i wouldn't read at all. I had a minor slump at the beginning of '22 but what has helped me was the revelation that I don't need to set aside special time for reading, I can just do it in between other activities. It may be super obvious but now I always read a book on the bus on my way to work, if I need to wait for something I also read, during lunch break whenever I cannot be bothered to talk to my workmates, i take my book and read. Out of sudden, reading has became a habit again and I read every day, between activities and in the evening because I love doing it. This mental barrier of allegedly having no time and the anxiety of having a massive book to read have disappeared because I find these little snippets of time to use for reading and feel rewarded by getting through a book, it feels like an accomplishment. I think many of us fear the time commitment necessary for reading and decide to not even start but once you realised you can actually find at least 10 minutes a day, it creates a habit and desire and ability to find even more time. I also love booktubers so much because they allow me to constantly feel inspired to read by recommending new titles so I can participate in a wider discussion. It feels like book club community and I love it, a lot of people I know don't read much or don't read similar books so I'm forever grateful for this community even though we are complete strangers spread across the globe but shared love for similar books is precious to me

From an early age I have always hated to read. it was just so difficult for me, but I always loved to listen I was a valedictorian in my major because I was lucky to have a really good teacher. I loved to listen! I will be lost when someone is teaching. But when I tried to read the same topic which I'm interested in...I just couldn't comprehend, I had to read at least 3-5 times to understand properly, and I came to a conclusion that it is just a waste of time to read because in that 1 hour I can learn so much by listening but I can only read one page in a hour it took that long. I was so embarrassed why I couldn't read when it is just easy for others I had a friend and she used to read a book with in 2-3 days, I was just flabbergasted. Later I discovered I had dyslexic and it all made sense

Loved this video. Another thing that helps me to immerse myself more into the story I'm reading is asking myself random questions like people would ask at a book club. My method: writing down 20 - 30 questions and putting them in a random generator. Pulling a random question after every reading session or chapter. Thinking about the answer or writing it down ( I keep progress in the app "read more" and save those answers as highlights). That helps me to really immerse myself with the story and have actual check ins about how I'm feeling. And it's super fun as I wrote down some fun ones like: Who of the characters has which Hogwarts house and why? - If you could tell a person anything right now who would you tell what - or - how does it smell right now. 😁

Barren Grounds has a protagonist that kept me reading because of how relatable she was to me in some ways.

I've recently took a greater interest in reading. I think it started when I watched the 2005 movie version of Pride & Prejudice. I felt like so much was left out of the movie that was in the book so, having never read P&P I made up my mind to read the book and see just how much the movie omitted. I was flabbergasted! The movie I watched was more like a 'preview' of the book version. I then watched the 1995 version and liked that it was more like the book. Since then I've wanted to find (& read) the book for every one of my favorite movies. So that experience has motivated and inspired me to read more.

My nephew, in junior high (7th grade), was struggling in the Accelerated Reader program. For those unfamiliar this is a program where your reading level is assessed and you have to read a certain number of point; books were assigned points based on number of pages and the types of words used. He was not meeting his required points and because of it he was constantly grounded weeks at a time. I sit down and talk with him one day and he tells me that he doesn't like reading, every book in his school's library was boring. I wanted to change his mindset so I tell him that everyone likes to read but not everyone knows what they like to read. I remember that he liked the Harry Potter movies so I suggest he started reading the books, I also tempted him saying that the books were worth a lot of points. He began with the first book, whenever he didn't understand a word or if he wasn't sure what was going on in the book he would ask me. We would talk about the book almost every day, I also re-read the books to engage with him even more. When we began this routine he was starting his second semester of 7th grade, by the end of the school year he had read the first four books. The following school year he finished the series and on his own he found another series, The Ranger's Apprentice. I also read the series along side him following the same routine. Even in high school he never struggled to meet his required reading goals and found out what he like to read. I liked the advice of reading the books from movies that we like, it was exactly the same strategy I used with my nephew. I will go even further and add another tip, more geared towards children, and that is to engage with them. Children learn from parents and from the adults closest to them, the adults don't read they most likely won't either. In order to promote reading to a child engage with them, ask questions (even if you haven't read the book), have them ask you questions as they might not understand certain things. The more you discuss with them, the more excited they become, the more they will enjoy reading. That's it for my TedTalk, if anything remember that we all read everyday. We read the signs on the road. We read social media posts. We read things for work, for school, sometimes we even read subtitles in movies. We all like to read, but not everyone knows what they like to read.

Alternate title: How to trick people into reading... I'm not complaining :) I was not an avid reader growing up, even though I really enjoyed the books I did pick up. I started becoming an avid reader a few years ago when I wanted to get serious about writing. And it's mainly thanks to audiobooks that I'm consuming books every day, what a game-changer! Since June 2020 I've listened to 55 books, ready maybe 6 physical/ebooks, and have a TBR that's currently 89 books (thanks to folks like you for the suggestions) so I always have the next one lined up.

Currently reading the first book from A Song of Ice and Fire, and near by the end of it I can say that now I REALLY like to read books, fantasy rings way better to me rather than classic romanian literature.. which is mostly about the time of industrialization, romance, village life which is not bad (because I think that if I go back to them now that I'm a bit older, I'll like em I guess). What I like to do when reading (especially for ASOIAF) is to listen to themed music, it creates an ambiance and shuts all distraction while reading which for me means A LOT. Anyways, I'm dragging this more longer than I should but your video helped me with some aspects and insecurities that I had (mainly about how much I should read, how fast, etc), lesson is.. read what you like, read it in a manner that satisfies you and make it a part of your routine.

Bang on with your advice, for me (to add to your points) a combination of two things that got me back into reading: 1. As you say - chase your interests! I realised that I stopped reading was because I was trying to read boring books I wasn’t actually interested in (stuff that I was ‘supposed to read’ as an adult). Realising that if I just read the stuff I read as a teenager (fantasy) I’d actually enjoy doing it (rather than being a chore and an extension of my day to day work) 2. To the point above, all your videos on Sanderson and mistborn that sounded really interesting (that I came across following your one piece videos) so thank you!! 3. Get a kindle (other e-readers are available)! Whilst a physical book is great, it feels like an ‘event’ to pick it up and the length may seem daunting’ Getting a kindle both made it really easy and convenient it also gamified reading

For anyone trying to get into reading please try the local library. Its an incredible resource. Its just a fun place to be and you dont have to worry about FOMO! Because you can just return the book! One of my favorite things to do is to randomly pick books without looking at a cover and seeing if it was good or not. Found a lot of my favorite books that way. Minimize your stress. Dont worry about having to complete a book. If a book is bad dont finish it. Also when I feel like I am not in the mood to read or such I will just say, "I'll read just a page" and trick myself into getting into reading, then read like 40 pages. Merphy's tip about the screens and the light is a good one. Try not to check your phone before bed. Physical books are really good for coming down at night and getting in the mood for rest. That said getting a tablet has been a game changer for me. I read so much more now and its multiuse and portable. One downside of the tablet though is it makes it so you dont have to go to the library as much. Since you can even check out books from your home. Pandemic shock has kind of also made it so I dont go to the library as much. I have to work on it. Edit: Also as Merphy said Audiobooks are definitely a game changer. Especially as they are interstitial. You can listen while doing so many different things. I listen at work and on commutes and it really helps pass the time. Dont worry about that old argument of if audiobooks are really reading. Thats just for book snobs to argue about on forums. If you are listening to an audiobook you are reading to me. The different format might be easier for your brain to absorb.

With your third tip, I have no idea what these are called, but in my hometown there's these, boxes I guess where you can drop off a book and take home another one for free and they're mostly all located in neighborhoods. These might work as well for people looking to read more.

I don't know if anyone else is like this but I find my taste in movies is so different than my tastes in books, except historical stories/period dramas as I love classic books and period dramas. But I love crime dramas but I find crime books boring and difficult to get into. My go to genre in films is usually horror but I don't enjoy reading horror books. I guess there are some things I would rather see visually.

I’ve always been in love with books but struggled to read. The only good thing from the pandemic is it helped me find my love of reading again. Primarily, my love of Light Novels. They’re so easy and fast to read that you feel accomplished. Whenever I’m in a reading slump I’ll tackle a light novel. I love the familiar formula a lot of them have l, depending on the genre, and it always feels inviting. A great confidence boost.

Which ones would you recommend? Been looking for some new books to read to help me get out of my reading slump!

@@imaginationsmusic1985 I am obligated to recommend Ascendance of a Bookworm. It’s an isekai (protagonist is from our world and travels to a fantasy world usually by dying) about a sick girl who loves to read and her dream is to build a library. It’s a slow burn epic fantasy series. Another isekai I’d recommend would be That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. It’s more of an action series but deals with building a nation of monsters. If you’re more into D&D and mature storylines I’d go with Goblin Slayer. I think that series has redefined how many people look at goblins in fantasy now. If you want non-series that will tug at your heart strings there’s… Three Days of Happiness - A 20 year old sells off his remaining life span and only has three months left to live. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas - A boy accidentally learns that his classmate has a pancreatic disease and will die soon. They start hanging out. Another - A horror tale about a cursed classroom. Highly regarded.

I love The Godfather and the YOU series and after watching them I then went onto read the books and it was so much fun. Not every story will be a better book but its part of the fun

My best advice, and the thing that keeps me reading and avoiding slumps, is to not be afraid to read multiple books at a time. In my experience, it’s comforting to have options when you’re sitting to read. Maybe one day you just don’t feel like reading that heavy fantasy book you’ve been enjoying - personally, I sometimes need time to process with particularly complex or emotionally charged books. That’s fine, concentrate on something a bit lighter for a while instead, like a romcom or a middle grade, or something requiring less heavy-duty imaginative input, like a non-fic book. I find that I enjoy my reading a lot more and I DNF a lot less books on the whole if I always give myself the option to take a break from a story to read something else for a bit. Maybe it takes longer to finish individual books that way, but I have a lot more fun doing it.

For me, what worked to make me start reading was finally getting an e-reader. I'm super picky to get comfortable enough to read and one of the biggest problems is that I find holding books annoying and given my size (I'm pretty tall) and mediocre focus (my eyesight is not horrible in terms of distance, but I can't focus that well in short distances) it was always difficult to find a good sitting position where I could read without forcing my eyes much. What made me cross the line was last year when a friend gifted me a Lord of the Rings book with the 6 books, and it's a velvet version or something similar, and since it's so long, huge and can get stains I thought "I'll read it with gloves or something and be careful" and it just didn't happen for months. The solution was to just get the e-reader and since I got it in last November I finished 7 books and 42% of LotR. And since I like reading heavy books finding a good chunk of time to concentrate to read is hard and carrying lots of books is not fun so the e-reader solved that too. Usually I'm reading a lore-heavy book that I can read 40 mins to a couple of hours and I have 1 or 2 "backup" lighter books I can read through when I have dead time while waiting for stuff or instead of browsing some meme page or whatever on my phone.

Hi Murphy, another advantage of eBooks is the ability to search the text. This was the first facet that helped me sell my wife on using them. The ability to increase font size (for us old fogies) is another one.

A tip from me. If find yourself felling less passionate about reading, maybe change they genre of books that you are reading. I was feeling kind of meh about Fantasy, so at one point I switched to reading mostly non fiction and classics. Then I came back to fantasy and there were a plethora of new books by exciting new "to me" writers.

I read on my lunch hour at work while I eat. Usually this averages only 2-3 chapters a day ( or one very long-winded chapter---looking at you Sanderson), but I've read the majority of my books this way. It is a slow pace and it could take me a month or more to get through a single book, but it works for me.

I use to love reading, but I need to be relaxed to read, and adulting didn't make that easy for me. But a few years ago I learned to listen to audiobooks, and with my job I can listen to an audiobook and work.

I love reading but lately I've been so busy with school work, extracurriculars, and life stuff that comes up. I don't even think I've finished 10 books this year which is no where near what I used to read. I'm going to try to implement some of these tips!

If you want to read ebooks, and you can afford a kindle, it is an absolutely great idea. Reading on a kindle is great because (1) it is a dedicated device for your books with no instagram, no emails, no notification. (2) the screen has no glare, compared to your desktop, laptop or ipad. You can also read in the sunlight, if you want to enjoy a beautiful day. (3) the 'base kindle' will most likely fit into the pocket of most men's trousers. If you are wearing baggier clothes, so will the paperwhite (4) one charge lasts a month, even if you read every day (5) you can easily look up words in the in built dictionary, and highlight things

For folks who haven't developed an attention span yet, I often recommend short story collections. Jackalope Wives by T. Kingfisher is usually top on my list. But depending on the reader and their maturity level, George Saunders, Wendell Berry, Ann Lamott, and David Sedaris are others whose works are no fail.

I read a lot of historical fiction because it teaches me a lot in an entertaining way, but I'm trying to expand what I read more, and am starting to be interested in fantasy. I read the Ember Blade and absolutely loved it, and have a TBR list of other fantasy books.

I may have dropped some more physical og books but I have kept up with fanfics and really got into D&D podcasts-especially for mindless tasks/trips. Slowly working back into original physical books and been trying to figure out ways to bring it back into my life, as much as it was when I was younger.

I’ve been an avid read since I was a kid. However after my mom unexpectedly passed away a couple years ago I don’t like to sit still long enough to read anymore. Outside of weekly One Piece chapters, I no longer read. I miss it but don’t have the joy as I did before.
