I began genealogy many years before the internet. My father began in the 1960s. I do not download images or media. I transcribe the documents into the notes section of FTM in chronological order. This helps to analyze the information and helps to detemine if it is the correct person, migratory route, etc., and helps to remember the ancestor. One thing that FTM users need to do is to compact the files on occasion to help it run more smoothly - much like defragging and cleaning files on your computer.

First thank you so very much for providing this important information. I had a FTM back in 2007 I saved to a floppy disc that I can not find now. Years later I started with Ancestry. Although I like Ancestry I enjoyed the reports and timelines that the FTM had (I hope they still have). First I am looking to get the FTM now and trying to see where to purchase it and in what form? 2nd in doing so hopefully with all that you have shared will attempt to sync with Ancestry . Can you explain how to merge and "unknown spouse" to an existing spouse?

Typically that's difficult. I usually link any children the "unknown" spouse had to the existing spouse and then delete the unknown one (or delete the 'marriage' relationship)

I don't find that to be true. The amount of time depends on the size and complexity of the tree you're trying to load.

No, it is a computer program. Apps are for mobile devices, this requires a full computer with an operating system such as Windows or MacOS.
