I don't mind that only a few questions were answered, they were all very interesting subjects that just demanded more to be said! Also; shoutout to Paul Mecurio, he was a nice addition to the episode! He kept calm and didn't try too hard to be funny or anything, wouldn't mind having him around another time! It is simple, he has a passion for Space, just like a curious kid that once looked up the night sky. No matter what area you cover - as long as you truly feel passionate about it, You will inspire others and make it more interesting as well. So it's not that he just talks simple language and doesn't use some crazy scientific phrases, he genuinely makes you love it even if you weren't into it before. That is what i love about it in general.

If I am not mistaken, moon visits, & space travel, is about perspective. I love this. I feel validated, as I believe, passionately, in perspective having the power to change the past. Seeing anything from another point of view, fits one's own perspective into a greater conversation, narrative, & understanding - leading to forgiveness, etc. Thank you!

NDT has attracted so much more interest in science and has made it interesting enough for the young who could be our future Einsteins and Hawkings. NDT has his own science lab that he misses working in due to his high demands to educate people.

I certainly feel your pain, in regards to the lack of interest. Not so much as i pertains to one single subject, but more the out right dismissal of the other wise implied interactions that may occur as a result. IE; someone says there has always been carbon in the air..... so why should i think its so much worse now. When science for yrs can show the last time it was present in the air at the lvls of carbon that we are reaching today, the world was under mass extinction, and climate shift that took thousands of years to change back to the state we enjoyed before the industrial revolution. Yet the same person who can agree with that, still thinks its stupid to think about the science it takes to get the cores of ice, we test to get those very results. Possibly even questioning, or in some cases claiming complete fraud, in the validity of the science that has been undertaken in the first place. Cause, why? Oil is what we got, so thats what we get??? sounds stupid when u say it like that, but its all relevant. if i had to choose principals, or states of mind, that would one day determine the state of my civilization... and the choice was - blissful ignorance... OR scientific skepticism. - .. which would you rely upon to save your children, your home, your planet, and or your entire race. < Intentional period, not question mark. I suppose its not a question to me, because the very idea or concept, that blissful ignorance is even a very real world option, just makes me sick. Lots to say i suppose. any thoughts, tubeaverse?

@@darthevol5734 Well put, Sir ! I agree with that statement as well. More true now, within the advent of planetary communication, and free exchange of ideas, and belief. More now than ever, its our individual responsibility bridge those gaps, and find our place within the world we share. the fact there are over 6 billion people with a common interest in the largest battles that face our world, and our species.... stands to reason to me, that we have the best chance for victory, by standing together.

Love the show and these are always really fun an interesting! Altho once i noticed it, i can not stop noticing how much Neil interrupts people, everyone he talks to. And not just by accident. It is always when someone else starts to speak or even respond to him, Neil just cuts them off immediately at the first words.. again and again, and then having the audacity to call out others when they interrupt "Will you let me finish my sentence?" .. Really? Like you interrupt someone 100 times and they interrupt you once and even that is unfair? I really really hope that Neil becomes more self aware about this, even if you do not think others have anything important to add, they might, and also it is just basic manners. Having this big presence and fame i am not sure how someone could approach him about this, but someone could do it. I do not think he does it on purpose, by now it is just an ingrained habit. A wonderful communicator with lots of interesting knowledge and views, don't be like this, be better!

You're right. On the most recent Joe Rogan experience, the interrupting was so bad that the YT commenters jokingly called it the Neil DeGrasse Tyson experience, featuring Joe Rogan. It doesn't bother me too much, though, because I usually want to only listen to Neil. But it is definitely rude at times, and I think it's become a habit. So don't expect to hear less of him!

Dr. Tyson, it's always a pleasure to hear what you have to say, and it's a great thing for science that we have someone like you to publicly champion the causes of higher learning and higher thinking. I think you got some information on the tides slightly incorrect, however. On the equinoxes, the tidal effects we see from the Sun will be negligible at the poles. There may still be tidal effects from the moon on those two days, because the moon doesn't orbit along Earth's equator; it orbits at a 5° inclination to the plane of the ecliptic, which means it will be anywhere between 18.5° and 28.5° shifted from equatorial orbit. This means the tidal effects from the moon at the poles will vary based on the moon's position during its orbit of Earth and are independent of the seasons.

Omg he tried explaining the difference in density of the Planet Saturn vs water on Earth lol for over 10 minutes! 😂 I have a rule; if it takes longer than 5 minutes to explain something, you're either doing it wrong, or you're talking to someone without the mental capacity to comprehend.

AT bout 18mins in (the reason I think Neil is the shit) he don't just want some random picture of himself singed on a wall, he wants to help add something to the human race as a hole. Teaching someone something and he enjoys that. We need more people like him in this world.

13:00 I always thought that for something to float it had to way less than the total weight of the water it displaces...which is the same thing said differently.

Neil should not be sad that Saturns rings are temporary....He (and all of us) should be ecstatic that this (relatively) short lived cosmic spectacle occurred so close to us and in our time!

I was having a conversation with my colleagues about why oil floats on water, i had to explain about water displacement and how this keeps ships afloat despite the hundreds of tons, i didn’t know you included the air as a counter to the mass of the steel though, i just thought of the ship as an impermeable mass being squeezed by the water below. Back to the oil though, could you do a little bit on density and how this causes different types of oil to float and resist being permanently emulsified with the water.

Hey, Dr. Neil, it's interesting that you mentioned the brain here. I am struggling through a series of DVDs called "Understanding the Brain" by Dr. Janet Norden. It is amazing to learn about the many parts, such as the Telencephalon, the Nucleus of Cumben septi, and the many ways that things can go wrong if development does not occur properly. We see with our brains not our eyes; in fact our senses merely allow our brains to interface with the world and the universe in which we live.

The Baffin Bay phenomenon IS about the height of the tide, it's due to the 'sloshing' of the water in the bay being in sinc with the tides. The tides are in resonance with the slosh.

8:00 Is it possible for a large enough asteroid to have a shape that can rest a body of liquid and rest Saturn in that liquid on it? If it was a bathtub floating in space it makes sense that it would wrap around Saturn but what about an asteroid made from one or combination of all known elements and molecular patterns it could possibly be made of? As a non-physicist I wonder if this is possible within known laws of physics. I remember reading about smaller planets crashing into larger ones and being swallowed by them but they usually have high velocity. What if Saturn was dropped in a slow and controlled manner with thrusters on one side working against the pull of the asteroid?

No. You would need a rocky planet perhaps a quarter of the size of our Sun in order for this to be possible. A rocky body of sufficient size to have a basin large enough to fill with water to accommodate Saturn would, under its own gravity, become so hot that liquid water would not be possible. It is possible that a rocky body of such size would become star-like due to its own mass and density. For context, Earth is significantly more dense than Jupiter (almost 4 times more dense than Jupiter) while being considerably less massive (Jupiter is 318 times Earth's mass) and much smaller (Jupiter's diameter is about 11 times that of Earth). A rocky body of Earth density and Jupiter's diameter would be many times more massive than Jupiter, and could hypothetically have a core capable of thermo-nuclear fusion, though this may result in an unstable reaction that would cause the planet to explode.
