@@leomdk939 what if there is no answer to that question.. as frustrating as that would be... Lol So we are in our own physical body as an individual but are we part of a collective consciousness? perhaps we are all the same at the core, "consciousness" or "awareness" and the physical body is just a temporary host to facilitate the experience.. Or maybe it's nothing of the sort 😂
@leomdk9395 жыл бұрын
@@flimflama9333 I think there is no way for us to get to the answer, unfortunately. All that 'collective consciousness/temporary host' stuff could be true, and yet it does nothing to answer the question of "why is my current perspective from this body right now until it dies?" (and does it imply a different body after I die? If you believe in a 'collective consciousness' then it's not too far of a leap to get to reincarnation) ... I ask the question knowing full well there is probably no way for us to find the answer. It IS very frustrating - and a bit scary -- to discover that one of the greatest mysteries in the universe is the concept of 'yourself'. Having said all that -- I think about when we were 3 years old, we were not aware enough to know that we should ask where babies come from, physically. We just accepted that they appear one day. That was a complete story to us back then. When we were 7, we did not know we should ask what consciousness is - we just accepted that it is a thing that happens. When we were 11, we did not know enough to question 'the location of self'. You just accepted that you were you and that was enough information. As we matured, we gradually 'woke up' to the next question we should be asking. With all that in mind -- I wonder about which questions concerning our existence are we still too unaware to even know we should be asking? I know NDT talks about this question in a more general sense -- but for me this question is even more eye opening in this particular context of 'self'. Maybe in a later evolutionary stage in the future, the human mind will have the capacity to ask this question of 'local self' in a better way -- hopefully one that can reveal the answer. Until then, yes -- it's frustrating that all we can come up with basically amounts to ... ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@atlormerjo8830 Basically what the quote means, there are things we know for sure, and we _know_ that we know them. For example, we know that if you drop a ball, it falls to the ground because of gravity. Next, there are known unknowns. Basically, these are things that we don't know about, but we understand the fact that we don't know about them. For example, we know that dark matter exists and it has mass (and therefore has gravity), but we have no idea what dark matter actually is. It's an unknown, but we know that we don't know anything about it. For known unknowns, we ask questions, and eventually, figure out the answers. Finally there are unknown unknowns. These are basically just things that we haven't even discovered yet, so we don't even know how to ask questions about them. For example, if you were to go back a couple hundred years, dark matter would have been an unknown unknown. We weren't able to measure/estimate the mass of galaxies yet, so we hadn't discovered that there had to be some other invisible substance that gave galaxies their missing mass. We wouldn't have ever had to imagine dark matter back then, despite the fact that it certainly existed back then, just as it does now. So back, then, it was an unknown unknown, because we didn't know it existed at all.

Omg someone actually asked, "If the universe need not make sense to us then what's the point of doing science?" hahaha that's hilarious! 😂 Dude, scientific literacy is the most effective inoculate against those who try to BS you! If you know how to best use your given senses to accurately interpret the world in which you are presented, it makes it all the more difficult for you to buy into what someone else might try to tell you. You're less likely to buy something you don't need, or join some crazy religion or cult. You make better decisions in life, because you won't be wasting your time and hard-earned money on crap you don't need. You're less likely to fall for someone trying to pull the wool. THAT'S the point of, "doing Science," hahaha if you can figure out the way the physical world works, you can use that knowledge to exploit the laws of physics and improve your life, and possibly the lives of the people around you! The universe is under NO obligation to make sense to anyone. But, that doesn't mean there aren't CLEAR advantages to trying to figure it out!

Exactly similar to knowing your enemy, know their weakness, if you know your domain it will be yours to shape and change just like the the world keeps changing to adapt to our growing technological prowess and hunger for knowledge which will eventually drive us to beyond our planet, to others and other stars, how ambitious now, will be possible in the future

Whether they aired the Startalk episode where I get to ask Neil any questions I want or not, I would still take it. Whether its uploaded or not, sitting down and talking with Neil deGrasse Tyson is a huge opportunity.

It saddens me that nowadays manufacturing meaning in the average persons life is accomplished by bringing suffering rather than than joy to someone else everyday. The hubris and selfishness of man guarantees suffering in perpetuity.

Star Talk is my own personal politics repellant. As long as I'm watching Star Talk, I continue to increase my own knowledge, instead of stunting my personal growth by watching bias news clips and reading ignorant comments.

when i was a kid i used to be very curious, and over time my curiousness went down, i still felt interested by almost anything but i was too lazy to act on it, i could hear some interesting scientific fact but then i would never research it despite being interested, and honestly after watching some of your videos its like that lazyness has totally went away and now im way more curious not just about astronomy but in general, its truly great what some interesting facts plus a charsimatic way of showing them can do, thanks man
