So glad to hear this from Mr. Tyson, as I wrote a sci-fi screenplay in the 1990's that noted this as 'fact,' and the reason time travel hasn't been successful, until the time traveler in the story figured out a way around it to make it work. Thanks for reinforcing my time travel sci-fi screenplay with some actual 'fact!'

but isn't a black hole a singularity in time as well as space?
@animistchannel29834 жыл бұрын
In a way, kinda. The theory is that when you cross the event horizon, they invert into each other, so time becomes space and space becomes time. That's why once you enter it, you inevitably end up going to the singularity, because the center of the black hole has now literally become the future. How wacky is that?
@felicityc4 жыл бұрын
@@animistchannel2983 that's more or less a roundabout way of explaining that the light arrow = the time arrow, and since all light must go towards the singularity, then all time goes towards the singularity in truth, a 'singularity' is simply a point in relativistic physics where the mathematics breaks down, and can no longer be used. It doesn't imply it is an absolute object or the effects of it; in fact, the event horizon is not actually that interesting. it's just the threshold of no return, much like how every gravitational object has such a horizon for a velocity = 0 object. to make any real predictions of the effects of a singularity requires a theory of quantum gravity, of which we do not have one.
@animistchannel29834 жыл бұрын
@@felicityc Well, we pretty much know what the 2 options are for encountering the singularity, we just don't know which one will happen. Unfortunately, no one is ever coming back from there to tell us what it was, either way :)

Neil, you need to change that Back to the Future reference, because the Sun also goes around Sagittarius A* and Milky Way moves too, so we are never in the same location again. Love these explanations videos, thank you very much for making these!
@texasray52373 жыл бұрын
Everything in the universe is moving, and at great speeds and in different directions. Between the earth's rotation, earth's orbit around the sun, the solar system's orbit around the center of the galaxy and its independent movement within the galaxy, and the galaxy's movement through space it's estimated that we are moving about 530 miles per second. And in ever changing directions. Wormholes, being transitory and unstable foldings of the space-time fabric would be pretty hard to find if they exist at all and even harder to re-find after even a split second. And considering that there is constant movement for both ends of the hole, I think the possibility of ever using wormholes to get where you want to go would be pretty slim. Humanity will be extinct long before we could ever get that technology. Even the concept of the existence of a precise point in space is pretty unsure and abstract. Any point has to be defined by its relative position to other points, but if all the reference points are also objects moving in different directions and at different speeds how can one ever define the location of a particular point. In a fraction of a second all reference points will have moved so far that they become useless. So not only is it impossible to define or fix a particular point in space, doing so would not serve any purpose. Nothing is attached to a point in space. Everything is composed of and is relative to matter or energy, and it is all moving continually. So a wormhole from one point to another in space would be useless unless somehow the portal (on each end) were attached to an object in motion and moved right along with it. Instead of looking for wormholes to crawl through it would be better to locate a good healthy worm and ride him through.

Another interesting fact about time-travel, to add onto what Neil said in this video about the fact you not only have to travel in time, but travel in space in order to end up where you intended to go, otherwise you'd be in space somewhere... To add onto that, due to the rotation of the Earth, even if you travel back in time 1 second, you'd be thousands of meters away from where you intended to be, because of how quickly the Earth spins (Relative to how tiny we are).
