In The Matrix, Neo just spends his time getting high and looking for conspiracy theories over the Net. Then the guys from outside find him and wake him up. If our Matrix is as well built as in the movie, it's better for your mental health to say f**k it and live your actual life unworringly. If someday the guys come to wake you up, hey that's a nice surprise.

I am autistic and have extreme ADD. It's the first time in a very long time i could sit so still for an entire hour just listening to these two. Something about their chemistry seemed like a dance between both their souls and i was just enthralled the entire time. To know these two are real life friends gave me such a happy feeling inside. And that feeling of wanting to be a fly on the wall to continue to see their interactions through life became a fleeting wish. Please, listen to our voices StarTalk team: please have Mr. Fishburne back as a guest.

I've always loved Laurence Fishburne as a person and as an actor because he is the spit of my late father. My dad died at 39 when I was 6 in 1993. The fact that Laurence Fishburne remembers the movie and understands it is actually amazing. That tells you a lot of his appreciation for said movie. It's actually not normal for actors working in big productions to have such an appreciation for their role. I think Neil is also forgetting they are in a simulation, and she can see the program script to know what's going to happen. Might be a small technical nuance, but it does avoid the clairvoyance cliche. He's also not seeing the humans as a source of thought and only as a source of energy: what's better than having billions of minds with unique ideas and thought processes to sift through as a sentient machine curious of the world? ( maybe it isn't explained enough in the movie )

Break it down for us what does that mean to you?

@@rasulsamad5860 In the context of the movie it means mankind doomed itself into being imprisoned inside of The Matrix. When the machines were about to win the war, human decided to "scorch the sky", and block all sunlight from reaching Earth, and cutting off the machines' main energy source. In response the machines started using humans as a new source of energy. Combined with a form of fusion, the machines were able provide enough energy for themselves to keep going and win the war. And in order to keep humans under their control, they created The Matrix. So were it not for humans cutting off the machines energy source, they would not have become the energy source themselves. Thus our fate was ironic. Or to put it in layman's terms: "F around and find out."

I think the Architect scene in part 2 implied the Matrix is a deliberate experiment the machines were doing to understand something about humanity. Using their body heat as energy was just not being wasteful, but not the purpose of the Matrix. Living processors does make more sense.

From a narrative point of view, and a public that mostly don't understand processors, a battery is way more terrifying. Star Trek Strange New Worlds has an episode in which an alien culture used children as processors. Very terrifying, but the ethical conundrum was the key.

Instead of a battery, originally the idea was that people were used for computer memory, not heat. They didn’t think that people would understand computer memory as easily so they changed it to a battery. When you think about it using humans as computer memory makes a lot more sense. The human mind has about 2.5 Petabytes of memory capacity. With a special form of compression the machines found all the memory they ever needed. They converted a human body into this (holds up a floppy drive.)

t isn't about being battery. ceo of NVidia telling they training robots in virtual world instead of real world. matrix is real place of robots, so they have to fully bring human there. robots use that pods to focus energy of human body to system. u see when they put out neo. there isn't bunch of pods. there is system of pods. bring human to virtual world need energy. robots have lots of way.

This is so good it’s insane. Best interview ever. It makes the audience feel like we’re listening in on an old friend’s conversation.

Not sure it's the best, there's an old Samuel L Jackson interview that was done around the time of Attack Of The Clones that was hilarious! It was on British telly though so most people probably didn't see it.

I really hope that this message gets to Neil since Matrix is his favourite movie. The original idea that I've read in multiple sources was that all the humans were not batteries, but a neural network needed by the machines as processing power. Allegedly, the producers insisted that the reason was too outlandish and they should be a battery farm. So...flawless concept originally!!!

Kinda makes sense. My interpretation at the time, was just the size of it... finding materials, as a power source, would create waste and also run out. With humans, it's more "recyclable" and scalable. They grow us and who dies is used to feed the live ones... This also means that, some or most, would die still a baby.

Laurence Fishburne is many of things: A superb actor, a gentleman and an intellectual. And I am glad that he was on StarTalk too. One of the best talk on StarTalk so far.

Hey, Neil! On your hall pass... the idea that human beings were batteries was a fall-back idea. The original idea was that humans were co-processors, but they didn't think the audience would be smart enough to pick that up. But as for your comment on "Why don't the machines just process the energy themselves" I like to think of it as us being the gut bacteria biome for the machines. The 'food' that the machines are giving the humans is like a person eating pro-biotic yogurt to stay healthy. But really, I like the idea of the machines using human brains as math co-processors that are pretty good at fuzzy logic better than human bodies as questionably efficient batteries. And I can't even describe how much I LOVE that Laurence understands and loves the lore of The Matrix and is scientifically curious! I've always felt more than a bit annoyed when some actor played in something like Star Wars or Star Trek or Doctor Who with no concept of the meaning or understanding of the lore or seeing it as anything but just a job. I mean... I guess it is just a job, but this job produces stories that have meaning for people. When someone doing the job to produce the stories has an understanding of the stories and realizes the importance of the stories and how those stories touch people... it is more meaningful.

Thank you for posting this. Using the same example or car engine and gas is much more simple: whatever they were feeding the humans can only be converted to energy by humans, not the machines. As we cannot run on gas, a car can’t run with food.

But in the Animatrix that tells the backstory of The Matrix, if I remember it correctly, the reason why they used humans as an energy source is because the machines were at war with humanity and humanity made some sort of bomb that would create a type of fallout that could block out the sun since the machines were using solar energy. After that, they started enslaving humanity to use them as an energy source
@MichaelWyattMDW12 сағат бұрын
@@JodyBrazyFromHell Yeah, you're right and that was the reason that ended up being used. I'm just saying it wasn't the original storyline reason.
