To clarify some confusion, Starter Decks Yugi & Kaiba were released on March 29th, 2002. The first official limited list did not go into effect until May 2002. While it's roughly only a one-month period of time, it's significant in illustrating the evolution of the game. Next episode will be dedicated to the first official limited list, and will highlight what a difference it makes! Stay tuned!

Wait a minute. The play at 16:29 with the Waboku shouldn't be legal, the older text of Waboku from SDJ was "Any damage inflicted by an opponent's monster is decreased to 0 during the turn this card is activated." Monsters still get destroyed as a result of battle.
@timaeus222224 жыл бұрын
@@iuuuuutubi Last I recall, Waboku has always worked the same way, even though the wording became updated.
@mnorth13514 жыл бұрын
@@iuuuuutubi no, they did the play correctly. There was a ruling issued about Waboku which clarified that that was what it did. This was before Yu-Gi-Oh cards were worded in a consistent and clear manner. That's always what the makers intended the card to do, they just worded it in a confusing way. Mentioning reducing damage to zero makes you think they're only talking about life points, but they meant to mean nothing would get destroyed also. You can Google it. LOADS of people used that wrong back in the day though.

The harsh truth a lot of beginners at the time had to face was that Yugi's starter deck...was weak. Sure in the anime Yugi managed to pull a win and had nice combos to keep him in the game. but compared to Kaiba's starter deck, Yugi's was weaker in terms of keeping field presence and didn't have ways to get his ace out compared to Kaiba's deck which had Lord of D. and Flute to get Blue-eyes. I realized this when me and my cousin (who I got into the game) opened up 2 starter decks (mind you this was when the game was in its early days) and played for fun and he decimated me so many times because he played the Kaiba deck while I was Yugi. heart of the cards works for the anime, but iin real life Kaiba's ideology is what dominated the format, even up to now.
@alexiecierra4 жыл бұрын
Use Change of Heart on Lord of D. Dark Hole would work on Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Monster Reborn on Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Or just use Yami and Reinforcement to increase Dark Magician's ATK. Both decks has equally chance of winning. Just getting the cards you need and pull of the combos
@alexiecierra4 жыл бұрын
Also, Yami and Reinforcement can work on Summoned Skull. Change of Heart on an opponent's monster and use for tribute summon. Man-Eater Bug can destroy 1 monster on the field.
@Goblin_Hands4 жыл бұрын
I doubt that happened as often as you make it out to be. If you each only had 1 Starter Deck each, then his only Dragons would be 1x Blue-Eyes and 1x Komouri Dragon, very inconsistent to get both Lord and Flute plus a Dragon (basically hoping to draw 3-4 Aces in Poker), and his only other advantage was a single La Jinn. It was more likely you beat him with Summoned Skull, Change of Heart, Man-Eater Bug, Giant Soldier of Stone, Mystical Elf, and Wall of Illusion. Both also had Trap Hole, Fissure, Reborn, Dark Hole, and a 1700 beater, but then again, you probably used the trash that is Gaia and Dark Magician lol. Multiple Starter decks, and booster support, sure, I believe you. Unless he was more like Bandit Keith and less like Kaiba, the only duelist that could afford not to cheat (using Millenium magic or god given "lady luck" in the case of Joey). At least Keith was honest about his misdeeds though, Yugi tried playing it off like wtf, you not only use a King of Games spirit that can punish players before they can win games 2 and 3, you also abuse the writing with "Heart of the Cards".
@mnorth13514 жыл бұрын
I don't know about. Kaiba's deck didn't have change of heart, or Summoned Skull, or Exchange, or wall of Illusion, or Waboku. And among the 2K defenders, Yugi got giant soldier of stone, which has the highest attack points of any of them (and also mystical elf - I think Kaiba only had 1 2k defender). Yes, Dark magician is crap, but I think all the rest of those might make up for having a La Jinn and a Blue Eyes.

The game that you probably want for this sort of format is Power of Chaos Yugi.

I still own mine, and Worldwide Edition (I wish I kept my HFD since then, but I later kept Secret Rares years after, so I'm still happy.) I did so twice, I think I lost my first copy or something, as a kid I had too much time on my hands. ı dont like how its called "history of" thought this was a trivia/teaching video instead of format similar to your other dueling format
@SaberToothPortilla4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems like it would be similar to his more pedantic content. But, I absolutely think that this is still in the spirit of being educational, what better way to demonstrate truths of a format than playing the game? That and it's a bit more interactive than doing analysis on old games, especially when it'd be kinda hard to even find any recordings before 2005 at least, maybe even later.
@kyuubinaruto174 жыл бұрын
Well, this one is more skill vs luck with the progression series. They're not opening packs here. They're just playing by whatever was most useful at the time. Watching how Yugioh could be in the past this just looks like it would be a horrible format that was too overpowered with no limited list. That's certainly teaching me.
@mickellmike72514 жыл бұрын
Well first: *this is the history* of yugioh. Second its not like pokemon where video games or tv was >card game. Third: *this is Yugioh* not devoted anime, just to show off monsters, not heavily involved in video games like final fantasy. Its a legit card game and hes showing how yugioh basically evolved. Ask around the anime is basically just shit to show off new card and bunch of ass pulls and bs heart of the cards.

This seriously makes me want to see somebody do a similar video with Alpha Magic, which has the most busted cards in the game and literally had NO limit on duplicates. Seriously. They added the 4-max rule very quickly after the game became a hit and they needed to balance organized play, but the first outing allowed for the most ludicrous shit imaginable. I wanna see the Fireball deck with twenty Black Lotuses.

Yes big facts. I'm glad that yall explained that nobody was really running any of those cards as such. But yugioh was phenomenal in the beginning because of the fact you knew all the cards coming for real. Within a dueling cycle, everybody ran different things and most people literally fought duels for the epicness association opposed to the today format of just otk and ftk.

@@ElshazamReformed Yeah, it's like Waboku but eats your opponent's monster too. Unfortunately, that's the ideal situation and with triple Raigeki/Change of Heart/Fissure that situation might be uncommon since you must also have a monster, so Waboku is safer no doubt.

Wow. Cimoooo absolutely obliterated him. Straight up murder. Demolition. Slaughter. Killed em. Destroyed. Buried. MBT's face during the game two massacre was priceless. And waow that Waboku was DEVASTATING. I think MBT forgot about it as well as battle ox. Kudos to Cimooo for aggressively using his gas while MBT probably held them too long. Next one should frankly be a little more interesting with the power cards going to 1. Games will probably be longer, Summoned Skull has to go to three I think.

Cimo reminds me a lot of me when I play older formats. Knowing very well how many disruptions exists makes him very careful with wasting recourses. You shouldn't fire of Raigekis and Dark Holes unless you are sure you are winning this turn or have a way to come back. I always make sure to have at least one monster in hand as insurence in case the board gets whiped with Dark Hole or Raigeki. During those times it was important to know when to play it save and switch to being agressive. One mistake would cost you the duel and Cimo is doing it perfectly
@donaldlivingston754 жыл бұрын
Yeah he timed it perfectly - even when he knew he’d come up short of an OTK he inflicted enough that he could Raigeki to clear and inflict the last bit whenever he wanted

So part 3 is Metal Raiders, which is after the May 1st list, but before the July 1st one, by like 4 days (MRD in NA was released June 26 2002). That means 3x Mirror Forces, Sangan/Witch, and Heavy Storm. I wonder if people really had triples in their deck at one point, or are we just going to use the July format?

@NoLongerNeedThis Жыл бұрын
Sheesh. That last game sure was a quick sweep. The lack of a limited list means that you have access to 3 copies of all the OP cards in LOB on top of the new cards introduced with the starter decks, which makes for an even more broken, chaotic mess, if that's even possible. The ability to monster reborn, change of heart, and raigeki all in one turn meant that you could stall with swords of revealing light for a handful of good cards, then wipe out your opponent's life points all at once. And keep in mind that 3 copies of swords means that you could leave your opponent unable to act for 9 turns. Nowadays the swords are unlimited again, but they've been power crept and are now no longer worth running, but back then they certainly were. A lot of this would come down to who drew their big game changers first, but skill does obviously come into play. Using your resources improperly only for your board to get nuked would be devastating.

The problem with the Exodia build from the previous episode is that it was just the walls and no win-con otherwise. Pure stall to the point having like 5 monsters and a Raigeki on hand still would make him doubtful about attacking. It also doesn't help that chump damage over turns mattered in the old days and it can be hard to adapt when one is used to lethal dozes of damage in plays nowadays. This time around MST was such a standard that it's actually a sort of common mistake to at best side De-Spell, but with Swords as prominent, it is kind of needed.... and Waboku rules although back in the day it was so badly worded that I didn't know it did what it did until the GX era of the game.

I'm pretty sure the "cannot be destroyed" is Waboku's errata effect. Original effect only reduced damage to 0 if I'm not mistaken.
@NoLongerNeedThis Жыл бұрын
Two years late, but in case anyone is looking, it was always the intended effect. Waboku originally said that damage that MONSTERS take this turn go to 0, even though monster's don't take damage in the game. Players do. The card actually has the rules of the game itself wrong. The reason for this is because the people in charge of writing the cards effects weren't properly informed of how the game works. Other card games at the time had HP values for cards, so they figured that saying that the damage monsters take going to zero would mean that monsters can't be destroyed, because their HP won't hit zero. Thank goodness this kind of miscommunication doesn't happen anymore. So it's not an errata in the sense that they changed the effect, but rather they changed the card's text to more properly reflect the effect intended from the start.

I started this series two months late, but I swear if MBT does not win with Exodia at least once I will be very disappointed. Seeing him play Exodia in the first episode and continue to get destroyed by cimooooooooo again in the second episode only proved to me that MBT needs to believe in the heart of the cards and play a win condition like Exodia. MBT is hilarious. Definitely subbed now. Also like the bakugan content. Pretty interesting
