​@@janiveija5040 not just diesels, I've push started my 2009 Pontiac G3 in reverse several times pulling out of work when my 12v battery terminals were loose and I just wanted to get home.

Manual can be push started that way: in a normal situation the starter will crank your flywheel to get your crankshaft moving, so when you push your car, thanks to the clutch, your engine is connected to the wheels so your engine is being cranked by the movement of the car and not by the starter

How does starter motor gear and the flywheel align always perfectly? They're not always connected unless the starter is running, so how do they get aligned?

My guess is that the gear will never be aligned to the flywheel while it’s in motion. Which is why you hear bad noises if you bump the ignition while the car is running lol

Look at its teeth edges, it's curved so eventually, the teeth just slide into the gear

If you look good you can see that the teeth from the startermotor has a bit bigger gap between it in comparition to the flywheel. So they wil allways go in

It has nothing to do with the gear teeth. If you can slow the video right down you will be able to see the following steps: 1. Power is sent to the starter solenoid to push the bendix gear forward. 2. As the gear is moving forward, the solenoid pushes the shaft in a helical pattern and the gear + shaft rotates a little bit (maybe just a quarter or an eighth of a turn). This small twist as we shove the gear forward ensures the teeth of both gears are always lined up before we apply power to the electric motor. 3. Gears are fully meshed and the solenoid contact plate causes battery current to spin the electric motor -- the starter is finally spinning the engine over for ignition.

Now what’s important to realize is that this isn’t the same starting mechanism used in modern cars’ auto start/stop system. Automotive engineers understood that this mechanism would wear out more quickly if it was being used 20x more often, which is why these mechanisms are usually beefed up, and the engine preps a cylinder to fire when it needs to start again to lessen the load on the starter motor. Just needed to say that because people think their new cars are gonna break at 20k miles because of auto start/stop, when in reality, they just don’t.

Lol. You mean auto start stop doesn't use motor... It uses a motor to start bro... Only that the motor is uniquely made to last longer.... Just be keen when im traffic. You will hear the starter motor stating the vehicle... Have been driving toyota harrier 2017

​@333panda a shim lowere the starter so that the teeth mesh more cleanly, giving a better engagement / hook in. If a starter isn't shimmed when it needs to be it won't hit the flywheel teeth like it should thus making the vehicle harder to crank

A starter does not use hydraulics to push the gear out, it uses electromagnetism

M,b,s motor, batter and starter battery supplies then goes to the motor then powers then armature and sorounded coils. Powers the starter motor and then the pulley goes out then it creates a high powered torque to start or jumpstart the vehicle.
