Well in our case, the Catalina is our final boat. We bought one for $3K with a pop-top, good outboard and relatively good sails. Since 1978, we've had a number of sailboats both racers and cruisers. Now at 70, we just bought a 25 to make life simple again. Eazy Peazy. Our 1982 Catalina was found in great shape. She was relatively well built and should provide a few more years of easy sailing for us. Key word: Easy. We just need roller furling and a cockpit controlled jiffy reefing system to facilitate stress free sail handling for us septuagenarians. Don't laugh, world renowned maxi yacht designer, Ron Holland (older than us) sails a similar boat, a 60's era Coronado 25 as his personal "retirement boat."

@@G029erthat's awesome! I'm 55 and want to learn how to sail. Problem is I don't live near the water. About 3 hours to the nearest saltwater. Are you close to where you keep your boat? May I ask how the sailing lessons are going and who's teaching you? This has been a dream of mine for years. It's difficult not living close to the water and being a professional chef and owning a catering business keeps me busy so much of the time. Wish I could make a living another way which would enable me to live closer to the water.

@@philipmayo4865 I took two lessons that consisted of applying my KZbin university knowledge in the real world and then spending hours tacking back and forth in the bay. Haven't taken any more lessons, just going out as often as I can. Fortunately, I live and work 25 minutes from the marina.

@@G029er that's so cool! I wish there was a way I could learn to sail. I feel like I will never get to fulfill my dream. We live in PA so I could get to the ocean in about 2.5 - 3 hours but that's not real practical when trying to learn to sail. Even if I bought a cheap boat and rented a slip it wouldn't really be practical to have it almost 3 hours away. I feel like a man who was destined to sail but cannot. Very frustrating! Any ideas?

If you have not already, you should take the Captain Q measuring stick aboard an O'day 25: no pop top needed. See the more common keel with centerboard version. Lead in the keel, so the lighter board needs no winch. 1979 or newer has nicer cockpit storage.

Love this channel! Kinda discovered sailing last year when a Delos video showed up on my que. watched all of them and several others. Decided I needed to do this and started looking at the sailboats these guys were using. Needless to say many were north of 350,000 and that was really just getting started. Amel, catamarans, 54 ft Oysters, etc... with my limited knowledge it seemed like a 50 footer or more was the starting point to cruise around the world. Then I found young people on 30, 35, and a guy in the North Sea sailing in winter on a 37 footer. I realized I needed to learn more. Watch a couple of Kretchmar(spelling) videos and realized it’s more about the way a boats made than it’s size. Today I stumbled on your channel and learned more. That a great boat can be found in my price range. I know their are more guys like me so keep doing what your doing and eventually your channel will take off. Your passion and knowledge are evident. I’ve already fell in love with 3-4 of the boats you’ve shown already. Thanks!

In Concord NH there is a trampoline park which originally was a department store. I happened upon the construction process and absconded away with 70, ~ 24 inch square pieces of the concrete some 6 inches thick and have had much fun with foundations for sheds, patio stoops etc. I have just completed (or started) forensic work on my Hunter 23. Leaking around the keel. For a couple of hours yesterday I thought that I would remove the (cast iron with a swing ~ yuck) and just place the cast iron keel upside down in the boat and just bolt it on as ballast and a coffee table. Makes the draft zero. Now I think that a piece of that trowel polished concrete !/2 rebar that fits "just right" will provide a lower center of gravity. Sanding and glass work to cover the holes, two trunks for two six foot (8/quarter inch aluminum "offset center boards" will finish off my "zero draft" ~ centerboard ~ Hunter 23. It is just so trailerable. The right amount of ballast and two "offset boards" that slide down about 4 feet or so, maybe at an angle ,should do the trick.....~~~ not kidding here.~~~ Thank you Captain Q!

What is your opinion on ease of stepability for the cat 25 mast? I ask because a friend of ours owns a home on a cove, with access to open water.....on the other side of a rather low bridge. I would think with a hinged tabernacle that steps forward, you could utilize the boom as a gin pole and have this thing stepped very easily and back up in no time.

Hey there friend, here’s the “canonical example” video of someone with a C25 who apparently takes their mast down and back up singlehanded, if not every outing, then frequently. Seeing how the wife and I are both getting older being hunched over all the time would become painful very quickly I'm afraid. A little more solar and a small portable gen set that I could strap to the deck with a few Dometic 12v Freezer/Fridge combo's in the after quarter birth as well as some extra water and we'd be off...

Or would you suggest that no one without considerable experience be out in blue water ?

Captain Q could this be a blue water as long as you hug the shore?
@YachtHunters4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevi, There are a lot of things to consider when we discuss blue water. Most folks seem to think of it as wild ocean seas and storms and water that has no bottom an with no sight of land or other humanity. Personally I think of it as the water she is tied up in at the dock The minute you Step aboard you enter the survival mode that is connoted often by discussing blue water. You want to know if you stay close to the shore in that boat will you be safe. The first thing that comes to mind is that sometimes being close to the shore if the weather gets bad is probably one of the worst places to be because you can be blown up onto the rocks in the boat destroyed and your lives lost. Quite often when a storm comes along Mariners will strike out to see and weather a storm where it's safe even though the waves are big and the wind is strong they know that they're not going to run into anything or nothing is going to run into them for the most part I live here in Maine and there are over 3000 miles of coastline the cruise and you can cruise a good deal of the time in quiet secluded waters or stick your head out into the ocean to go around one point after the other. I think you would consider yourself being in blue waters when you're in the actual ocean itself as opposed to the tributaries and streams that feed it. The real question here in my mind is not about the boat, because boats this size have gone across oceans, but, what is more important is the level of skill the captain and crew have and the preparation for all contingencies the boat might encounter wherever it's sailing. So to answer your question I think you could have fun coastwise cruising but there will be a lot more effort and money spent to get further offshore into the so called blue waters . I hope that helps a little happy new year

Interesting channel and some great finds. Such a boat would as you say be great for a couple looking to dip their toes pun intended into the water. I have seen sailing channels buy boats for around that price a little larger say 30 foot plus and go world sailing. Of course they had to spend a couple of years and god knows how much in materials labour and mooring fees to get it up to that standard. Obviously as is you need some TLC some cleaning some woodwork and a stove and away you go. Put some dinghy davits on the back mount a couple more solar panels on top and you can live on the hook. Get yourself a radio a Raspberry Pi Chartplotter a water bladder an awning and a rain collector a couple of indoor fans plus some wind instruments and you can cruise the Bahamas for months at a time. For very little extra cost even add a cooler or be fancy a 12v fridge/freezer for fresh food. I've got a 26 ft American (1970s model). It's been restored by the prior owner and is in about the same price range (and I'm selling it here in Olympia wa) Here's what you won't like about this boat- or boats similar to it. We've sailed ours for a few seasons now. Notice the tiller seat has no overhead cover? Ok- so the captain is going to roast his butt in the sun. If fact the lack of shade is a big draw back in these starter boats. Also the pilot has almost no view of what's ahead, so it's a bit of a pain. The prior owner of ours rigged up a booster bench to put the pilot up to see over the cabin and that is very nice. Pulling these out of the water is a good idea whether you trailer it or put it on stilts because you look around the marinas and see about 100 of them them rotting with a foot of growth on the hull. They are really good for overnight camping or getting out on the 4th of july and watching the fireworks at night, but to be honest- it's far from a cruising boat unless you're really young and broke. Price on this one is about right. I'm looking to get 5k for mine with trailer and depth finder/GPS.

I agree with the lack of sun shade. I rented one for the day found my self trying to keep it in a direction in which the sail would shade me.

always buy the largest boat you can afford ...assuredly you will buy something too small just to save money ..then you have to sell and buy again..
@andym15943 жыл бұрын
It's a good starter boat. You will find out what you like and don't like. You'll learn about furling jib and other stuff so you KNOW what you want on the boat you do throw big money on. I don't regret having bought ours in about the same price range. It's about what we spend on two family vacations to Mexico and we still have it. We discovered the IDEA of sailing and sailing were different. I think my next boat is a trawler.

Not sure how you can say they only built 5300-ish boat when I have hull #5894. lol Mine is an 89 and they actually built them until 1991. They are in the 6k's for sure. BTW, what should be mentioned about C25's and generally all Catalinas, is that they did minor but well done improvements every year they made them. An 89-91 model is much better than a 78 model. Lowered floor for headroom, better designed cockpit, winches, fuel locker, hatch, deck, pulpits, ports, fasteners, interior.......list goes on.
