I'm coming into this activity late in life and don't want to waste my final few years rotting away in a council flat or other such domain, I have saved up about 16000 Stirling so far which is still a pittance, I'm 62 and managed to save what i have in 3 years. if my health and my finances last another 3 years. I think i just might have enough money and time to sail until my toes curl up.This would be my dream come true.

If you read the yacht forums it seems impossible to sail out of the marina unless you have air con, a dishwasher, generator and water maker, on a boat not less than 40 feet, oh and you must wear a captains hat and a blue blazer. You prove them all wrong, well done.

@@larsbee Yes. That is so true of many activities. It seems like everything you own is like a chain around your neck. The older I get the less I want to own. I like my tools and my truck and a computer is nice and a few books. The cowboys who worked the cattle drives many years ago kept everything they owned on the backs of their horses. Today people own so much "stuff" that they have to rent a storage unit to keep it. I wonder what that says about modern society? With all that said though I would like to learn to sail.

Miss my 1972 Vega. Three boats later and it’s still the one I have the fondest feelings for. It was a nightmare in reverse as the prop sits above the rudder but repowering with a Yanmar 2GMF diesel and 3-blade prop really helped. The original gas engine with reversible pitch 2-bladed prop was inadequate. Was definitely comfortable for two.

I own a Albin Vega 27, S/V Viking V-3361. Fantastic tough seaworthy boat. I have been sailing her since 2013. She is in my opinion at my age of 64 yo. She is the perfect single handed boat. The Albin Vega owners KZbin and Facebook owners support groups and the absolute Best!!! The new and old Vega owners of these social media sights have always been helpful and cheerful to receive help from. I really don't think I would buy another more capable Deep Blue Water sailboat than the Vega, Simple to sail, simple to reef with a roller reefing mainsail on the Boon. And a roller reefing Genoa on the head stay.I sail at lease once or twice a week for two to three hours. And have taken numerous 100 to 200+ mile sailing voyages offshore along the Southeast Atlantic USA coast. and lastly with a fixed keel of only 3.5 feet draft. It is normal to find my Albin Vega anchored closely to the sandy bottom of the beach for a refreshing dip and wash flowed a wonderful steak on the rail gas grill. A seat back in the cockpit enjoying a cold after voyage adult beverage while I quietly await the "Green Flash" of the setting sun in my Vega Paradise. Arrrrrggggg!!!!

In the 1980's, I bought a $1,000 sailboat and proceeded to "invest $15,000 into a complete refit and restoration. (That was just for parts, as I did all the work myself.) This included a new diesel inboard among other things. I got a slip and went boating (for about a year) before I decided it was just to small. I put it up for sale and waited. I waited for a.year before it finally sold (for a whopping $3.000!) The way I figure it, I only lost $13,000 and 3 years of all my spare time doing the refit. I'm so clever. What did I learn? How to fix and repair old boats but never buy one.

Interesting video even though none of the boats you mention are seen on the market in my part of the world. I am considering a smaller boat to do some single handed sailing with shorter trips for 2. Here the smaller yachts are mostly the Holiday 23 and the very popular Sadler 26 (often described as unsinkable). Prices are a bit higher with the Sadlers around $5000 to $10000 if you want a decent example. For $2000 you will struggle to find a Hobie cat here. I think for even coastal sailing slightly larger boats (30-32') are popular here because of the rather hectic sea and weather conditions often found on our (South African) coast.

I had an Albin Vega 27. Now I have a Danish built Great Dane 28. And although the Vega was a good boat, the GD28 is another class. Though a bit more expensive. The GD's heavier displacement and full long keel, gives a feeling of a small ship and makes you feel safer. Some Vega owners, made modifications and locked the rudder in place and attached an external rudder outside on the stern. Cause with the prop coming after the rudder, the Vega can be a nightmare to manouvre in harbours with limited space. The lack of standing room is unfortunately a great downside with the Vega. Yes, the Vega and many other great small boats can sail oceans safe. But since small boats don't provide the same comfort as bigger boats do, then one in his search to find a small and cheap boat, should take the comfort in consideration as well. There are lots of boats out there and none is perfect.

The motto Go Small Go Now is so true. And small does not necessarily mean less safe. Cannot agree with you more. As for many other desirable features good to have, no boat can give you all. I just bought a Tazer 22 for $202.50 + $300 documentation fees on eBay. I’m quite confitdent that $2,000 would buy a fantastic little yacht if you shop around, bid or negotiate carefully, and invest your time to make a filthy boat nice again. The key to everything is to look for boats that have been for sale all summer at a marina while racking up docking fees, and when winter comes there will be a $500 fee to lift it out and put it on the hard for the winter. The reality is, if you offer to take it away, you may be able to get the boat for free, plus the cost to haul it away.

Mine I bought in Ireland for less than $ 2000 in 2018 was a 1972 Sabre 27 ft with a SAAB 10 hp of that ERA . It was a project boat for interiour needs I would have prefered to have bought a J24 type of 1974 era for figures of $ 1500 no engine often for sale in the UK and Ireland . Often however the problem was UK travel cost or Irish inland to sea water transport costs were adding another $ 2000 to buy or boats were sold very quick at those low prices. Bigger boats fir Marina costs and i do single handed my preferencr was to get sea master 23 foot full headroom center board keel or J24 types fin keel . The long keel or fin keel were needing marina costs so thier value dropped guicker than bilge keel or center board types .The Jaguar Alacarty 22 foot were never less than $ 2500 without outboards and have a severe lack of headroom than the J24 types. Be aware J24 types are often not self righting but i would on ovean sailing been willing to risk that as they sail as fast as.most 30 ft boats due to they have less weight . Then a better equiped boat bit narrow 30 feet of 1969 era came up in January 2020 . It had a 14 hp 2 pot Yanmar 2006 engine. So in January 2020 for less than $1000 sold the 27ft boat and bought the 30ft boat for less than $2000 . Then came Covid 19 and the 1969 boat got locked up boat yards for March 2020 to June 2020. Now I am based in a marina as live aboard in west Ireland fixing up on water so can repair boat even in the December 2020 to the July 2021 Cov 19 pandemic lockdown . The Cov 19 Lockdown did not happen to Sweden . Keep you posted I might sail to Norway in September 2021
