that was his intention, but he cut the video,I assume he realised that the bucket would not fill up and it would just float, also the slow submerging he was doing was alot better for the fish.

There was water in thr bucket and 200 cat fish so assuming that it wouldn't float I think this wouldve a good idea
@MrSharkBait5618 жыл бұрын
Thays funny. I was thinking about the same thing and I was hoping we would do that. It would've been really interesting seeing the water overflow into the smaller bucket and watching the fish swim out.
@henriqueb85388 жыл бұрын
As an advice I'd suggest you to acclimatize the fish in this new water condition by slowly putting some tank water inside the bucket during a 30min lapse. This way fish you will not suffer from rapid changes in ph, gh and temperature. By doing so you will not deal with stressed fish that may die due to diseases like you may have spotted in one among the catfishes. We usualy practice that while introducing new fish to aquariums.
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
I basically did that but remember these are not aquarium fish, these are very strong catfish.

when feeding fish.. you should underfeed them first ... and increase slightly as you learn. You run less risk of waste.. waste food is really bad as it contaminates the water. Underfeeding the fish isn't nearly as bad as you'd think.. it only slows the growth rate.

Nice farm! I have reared many fish and one misconception that many people don't realize is that water oxygenation actually occurs at the water surface. Bubbling with an air-stone or whatever doesn't make much difference, the trick is just to make sure there is enough surface area to allow the gas to diffuse into the water - a wide barrel such as this in an area where there's a bit of wind (surface agitation encourages gas diffusion) should be more than adequate (for fish these size).
@Vector_Ze9 жыл бұрын
+Tristan Janse van Rensburg Agreed. But, circulating the water benefits the tank by bringing lower oxygen water from below up to the surface, where it can have oxygen dissolved in it. i.e., stagnant water occupied by air breathers will probably have lower levels of oxygen the further from the surface you go. That is the primary reason to use air stones, to circulate the water. I'm not a fish farmer though. It's just basic High School biology, and what I'd learned by keeping tropical fish in a large tank. Green aquatic plants also help oxygenate the water.
@RosalynWindham9 жыл бұрын
+smart451cab isn't there natural movement already circulating the water?
@Vector_Ze9 жыл бұрын
Rosalyn Windham Sure, there is some convection, and probably even more from the movement of the fish. But, streams of bubbling air far outdo either of those. That's why they're frequently used in aquariums.
@Vector_Ze9 жыл бұрын
Tarragon Mugwort This I realize. Many Moons ago, when I was a youngun, I did an experiment along those lines. I used a small mouth quart jar: in went water, a mosquito fish (looks like a guppy) and a healthy sprig of elodea. Tightly sealed the jar and kept it where it received good daylight. That was something like 50 years ago and I don't recall exactly how long the experiment ran. I do remember being impressed by the duration though. In the end, the poor fish probably died of starvation, even though there was some food available from the plant. In spite of their name, their preferred diet is algae and plankton.

Bio filtration is necessary. They have gills to breathe under water but have primitive lung that allows them to live in poor water conditions like a place like Thailand where there are wet and dry seasons the bladder or lung are used in those conditions. Continuing coming to the surface to gulp air means the water condition is less than optimum.

Jason Stroman They're food, not pets. As long as they're alive and growing, why should it matter if their health is optimum?

***** Did you think about that comment before you wrote it, you could not have? Come by my house I have a free range cow from Russia that has grazed in Chernoybl fall out, yum yum. Disregard it's third eye it's only a birth defect, I've been told it taste great.
@anomalocarisgaming82058 жыл бұрын
Jason Stroman comparing a cow to a fish is preposterous. Fish are far more basic animals, living entirely off instinct, Cows, while still stupid, are far easier to empathize with, mistreating an animal like that would be upsetting to me, as it would be to any logical human being. To claim that a cow living in Chernobyl would have a third eye is also ridiculous, There's a documentary showing how wolves and other fauna live in the area around Chernobyl, none of them were ever shown to be deformed. Google "Chernobyl wolves documentary" if you don't believe me. The poster of this video also discusses how these fish are designed to live in hostile conditions, if you watch his later videos he shows the catfish reaching lengths of over a foot. The fish are obviously thriving in their current conditions.

Although they can breathe the air in less than perfect water, providing oxygen in the water will help them to grow faster and larger, improve cell structure and provide you with a healthier fish stock. They have gills as well as their lungs. Please consider even a small airstone, you could see bigger changes than you think. I know I do in the fish I raise and breed.
@lifeinthailand6 жыл бұрын
I added air to my tanks last year, I have seen no difference in the growth rate or health of the fish, but the air does keep the water moving and that gives them something to do, swim against the current is they want to. I have raised more than 10,000 fish at this point.

The answer is, I don't know, but my best guess is this: Fish have gills instead of lungs. Their gills are super efficient because of the large amount of surface area (think how a radiator vents heat faster because of it has fins that can touch more air at the same time). The problem with gills is that contact with the air collapses the gills against each other, dries them out, and other things that take it from high efficiency, to barely working. For some reason I don't know, catfish seem to be more tolerant to this problem, probably because they breathe through their skin, which resembles the skin of frogs (known to be a major part of amphibian air supply). Another interesting thing... In school, they told me all humans have Gill structures in the womb, but we grow in a different direction instead. DNA has so much information in it that we don't use, but we are limited in what information we use in our own bodies, in part, because of our sphere of survivability. That's a big limiter on evolution and why it's super rare to have a viable organism that doesn't fit certain rules and why, even if it can do that, it can't have viable offspring without a mate with compatible DNA. Science is a method and way of digging deeper, but it is not an answer by itself. Just like we have eyes and ears. The sense inform each other. God can write our history in the fossils and in books, but if it's true it's true. Everyone believes we have our first parents, even if they disagree on how it happens. If we could find an alien civilization in embryo, we could watch... but the problem is that watching it could change it too with something as simple as a speck of bacteria with an "f plasmid" (something that allows bacteria to mate with species that aren't the same but injecting foreign DNA fragments that alter the host's genome and gene expression). Anyway, I've said enough. Tall ho!

Or do you catch enough and assume one is female and one in the bunch would be male? Then just wait until the lay eggs
@slashboom1708 жыл бұрын
+sam111880 u get them from pet stores but teh real question is what do u do with them after they grow lol or breed .. flush down the toilet is not a good option and most fish stores wont buy ur fish .

@comfortouch8 жыл бұрын
@lifeinthailand Have you figured out what the name of the plant is that you are feeding to the catfish?
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
+comfortouch No, A few people told me the name but when I looked it up it was a different plant.
@comfortouch8 жыл бұрын
+lifeinthailand I think I found it. Look up Neptunia oleracea (common name: water mimosa) It's commonly eaten as a 'cabbage' flavored veggie in Thailand, and is considered a pest in Australia www.business.qld.gov.au/industry/agriculture/species/declared-pests/weeds/water-mimosa

That is it, Thanks, I should add some to the tank now, The fish are eating more so I am sure they well do a better job of eating it now.

I'm doing the same w/ bluegills. Don't fish need air bubbles when they are in containers for awhile? --I have a aquarium air pump--if not I will remove it.Can I ask a couple more q's?---I have high quality dog food I feed them...is that good enough? I am watering plants w/ the water so I wonder if I need a better 'fish food' to make better poop water for plants.What country do you live in?Thanks for your post!
@lifeinthailand8 жыл бұрын
I don't know anything about bluegill but dog food don't seem right, Cat food maybe but fish food for sure. These catfish can breath air so adding an air stone would help but not necessary. This is in Thailand.

Air bubbles circulates the water and provides oxygen for the fish, especially if there's not a lot of disruption on the top of the water. ultimately, what happens is that the fish can suffocate. downside is that if you dont have some sort of substrate to keep the waste at the bottom from circulating with the water, you could potentially be poisoning the fish with their waste. Its up to you with what you wanna weigh the pros and cons. As for the food; as the saying goes, "you are what you eat". Meaning the food that the fish is eating has nutritional value of the dog food. My dog eats high quality dog food while my fish eat high quality fish food (with vitamins added). the nutritional value and content vary with both foods. I'll let you think on those thoughts. :) hope i was helpful.

wow, i was reading up on catfish rearing techniques..from the actual process to about few weeks progress. Thanks for sharing this video.I found it really helpful. But I notice you don't have water outlet pipe. How do you get rid of the dirty water. Do you just scoop them out to water your garden and refill only when it seems dirty? This idea just suits my plan as I am thinking of putting the tank at the end of my vegetable garden. Is mosquito a problem with this tank? Thank you
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
I pump the water out, fish eat mosquitoes. Have lots more fish videos if your interested, just got a bunch of new babies.
@jessieu.59377 жыл бұрын
lifeinthailand yes, will you be making any videos on how to separate the catfish once they are bigger? i read somewhere that they need to be separated according to sizes using wire mesh cage or else the fish will eat the smaller ones especially in organic tank due to infrequent feeding. Some bloggers wrote online that catfish bred in organic tank ( sand,compost and then some lilies on top) need not be fed until the fish are about 4 mnths old...some breeders got misled and lost tons of fish...(gathered from some forum somewhere).
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
Never smart believing what you read or see online anymore, people well say anything to get you to click on their video or blog. Always have to use your head. I have not had a problem with big fish eating small fish but you can not mix fish in my experience, the well kill each other. I would like to know how the professionals separate fish by size, has to be something with holes so the small ones get through and the big ones don't, can't be that hard to make.

yeah when transfering fish you want to make sure that the water in both containers is as close to the same temp as possible or you will shock their system and could get a lot of deaths from it.
