I have 64 plants and plan to add 31 this spring...all that i grew from seed. I too, work full time with a dream in retirement in 5 years to go big with lavender, rhubarb, asparagus and many more things from my 11 established acres. Best wishes..

Nice, we're planting 200 this spring.😁 How are you amending the soil?🤗
@graystemfarm3 жыл бұрын
We amended the soil with lime per recommendations (soils test) and tilled it in. They we put down the gravel and plant in the gravel with the soils from the grow out pot. We lightly fertilize in the spring with some fish & kelp liquid fertilizer and that's it for the season.

Is that the best way to plant. Directly into gravel? How well did your plants grow? Thanks
@graystemfarm2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your soils. We have heavy red clay native soil which lavender does not like. Raised gravel works in our situation to keep the roots from getting water logged. We also set the plants with their potting soil. Planting bare roots or small plugs directly into gravel without some soil doesn't work well. Growing lavender in pots also works well.

Can I just broadcast lavender seed onto bare soil for a "field" of lavender? Or does it have to be in rows?
@graystemfarm Жыл бұрын
You could try; however, it is very difficult to direct seed lavender. Rooting the prunnings is much easier. Also lavendet need air flow between each plant. Good luck!

I have acreage that is likely to flood in the Spring. Would this kill the Lavender plants?
@graystemfarm2 жыл бұрын
Lavender does not like wet soil. The plants would likely die once the floods come.

We also started a flower farm here in the uk last year, I’d love to fill an area with lavender ( will have to save some pennies) I have the land to plant just not the money to buy plants right now, so frustrating, but hopefully 🙏 god willing, we will get there. Lovely video, please check our channel too x

What is the medium that you're planting the lavender in?
@graystemfarm3 жыл бұрын
The plugs are planted in Promix fast draining potting medium to grow a bigger root system for several weeks and then the rootball with the mix is planted in a small gravel blend 8 inches deep above the soil line.

@@graystemfarm why gravel? I want to start a lavender plot. Thanks
@graystemfarm2 жыл бұрын
@@oldpioneerfarm5673 Our native soil is heavy red clay. Lavender does not like heavy soils that keep the root zone wet, therefore we plant in raised gravel rows for good drainage. Eventually the roots make it down into the native soil, but the mass is not getting wet. What you plant in depends on your native soils. If it's sandy, you need to improve it with compost or water holding soils. If it's good soil, don't fertilizer or water excessively --- keep it on the dry side. Lavender also prefers neutral to alkaline over acidic so lime is also good to add.
