We realised that having a fake grass lawn was a mistake. In this video, we are showing you around our small garden in the UK as well as the changes we are making in order to attract pollinators and grow our own vegetables.

nice random yt suggestion! great to reuse/freecycle so much. nice set-up. you asked for suggestions :) - a cross bars (from bit away from top corner to vertical corner) on your cucumber frame would add much more stability, rather than having to rebuild completely. - and how sturdy is your pergola roof? would be a great place for a selfwatering container (rather than having to use steps to water) with a trailing veg (like dwarf tumbler tomato) - prime location for light up there, and should get enough east/west light to ripen - or pollinators.
@daniandjoanna8 ай бұрын
Glad that you enjoyed the video, the pergola roof is plenty strong as we have about 500kg worth of roof tiles on it... We were entertaining the idea of removing them so we can trail some sort of vine plan instead.

Gardens are never finished. Don't worry about the messy areas...also have a quick look at companion planting..might help with the bugs and nasties. I use it and have been organic for about 7 years, yes things get eaten, but no hedgehogs are harmed by slug pellets
@daniandjoanna7 ай бұрын
We don't plan to use slug pellets, and we have planted a bunch of marigolds and different companion plants. Whether we do it right is a different question lol 😅

Yes, we are pretty lucky we don't live on one of those new builds... And right at the bottom of our garden there's well established woodland. 🤗

It's great that you got that greenhouse for free. It will be a big help in the growing season and it's a nice place to sit when it's raining. We got many windows for free but we still have to build the greenhouse. I just discovered your channel and subscribed to it. Greetings Heidi 👩🌾🌻

I really like what you two have done with the large beds. Looks like you carved out a little working space using stone to create a bed within the bed, then putting a greenhouse structure on top of it. Superb! Thanks for the idea for my two 8x4 beds!!
@daniandjoanna8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much. It doesn't feel like it's carved out when you are there! And just made sense to do it this way at the time. So happy that you have an idea for your beds 😊

It is so good to see things being reused and repurposed. I've always worked on the basis of reusing that you have and can find for free as too much goes to landfills. I only buy items if i have no other choice. You're making a very usable, and im sure it will be a very productive garden. It will be interesting watching your progress.

Love everything but I need to ask what are the upside down bottles for?? 🤔🌧🌱
@daniandjoanna7 ай бұрын
We used those to plant herbs and flowers in them, we cut a window on the front of each bottle, also holes in the lid of each bottle so we only have to water the top one and water makes its way down to water the rest. Hope this helps :)

You don't have to build a new cucumber trellis. Fasten a board about 15" in from the top corner to 15 " down the side in both corners. The triangles will stabilize the trellis.

What a fabulous job you have done . We reuse what we can here too. My patio table is made from pallete wood and so is my arch. My patio chairs are normal farmhouse dining chairs which were £10 for 4 from market place. I've just painted them in alfresco paint. They may do me a few years..our trellis is a metal headboard and no one would know otherwise. I think your garden will look brilliant this year. I too make my own compost in a free bin the same as yours. My little suggestion if I may, would be don't put your rose prunings in your compost as they can carry disease. Pop them in your council garden waste. I'm excited to see your rose when it grows. Keep going guys. Well done
@daniandjoanna8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the tip about the rose prunings. Definitely won't be putting them in the compost again! Up-cycling is definitely the way to go. We have a bunch of pallets slats that we will use for a few growing containers 😊🌻

Nice to see someone put "Low" before "Budget". A lot of KZbinrs say they are "working on a budget" and I look at all the things they are buying and building and think, "Working on a budget yes. didn't say what size!" I grind my egg shells with my meat grinder before putting them in the compost.
@daniandjoanna8 ай бұрын
Yes, we prioritised spending a little more elsewhere. But that's for another video 😁 Also a great tip for the egg shells. 👍 We were thinking about trying to powder them with a blender and use it for tomato feed.

Im located in the South East and although I was able to grow cucumbers out doors... I had about 50 in my greenhouse for every one I had outside. Max 2 plants inside as you will have loads. Also try chillies and Peppers. I always keep seeds from last years fruit so I dont have to buy seeds every year
@daniandjoanna8 ай бұрын
That is awesome! We are really struggling when it comes to planning the layout and prioritize the things we would like to grow. More containers needed 😅

Don't put yr compost on the bottom...All the nutrients will wash away. Use it as a mulch round plants so they get extra feed X
