In this video we put in the two lines of catch wires needed to hold the leaf wall up and away from the grapes that will hopefully dangle from the main trellis wire.
The catch wires are spaced approximately 25-30cm for the first set above the main trellis wire and the about 30cm-35 above again for the second set. Not absolutely strict on the spacing. Many people use 30cm gaps for both sets of wires.
In this video I used the follow equipment
✅ 2mm galvanised wire
✅ Spannfix wire tensioners and tool
✅ Tape measure
✅ Hook Nails and hammer
✅ Wire turner to tidy up the end wires.
The wire tidy can be found here: bit.ly/2LgbroD
I got the spannfix wire tensioners and the hook nails from:
www.vigoltd.com/
Also have a look at www.winegrowers...
They have a wealth of information and are really helpful.

A great site to learn from! I wish I could find the wire tools and trellis supplies you use in the USA. I have land in Powhatan, Virginia and will be planting one 300 foot row to start.

Thanks for the excellent videos. Very informative, simple and effective way of building a trellis system than I have seen from other sources. Great vine training tips too. There are probably a hundred ways of putting a trellis together but your system has given me great ideas and saved me money for my (much smaller) vine set up in the piedmont of North Carolina.

Love these videos~! Question: it appears the fescue directly under the vines have been killed off. Can I assume that was by design? If so, how did you go about targeting and killing it off?

Hi there - great informational video! Could I ask, what would you say the expenditure would be to get to this stage? Ground prep, posts, wires, purchase of the vines themselves, any other costs etc? Thanks!

Hi Alastair. I started with £5000 and o still have£1500 left. So it has cost me so far £3500 for absolutely everything. This includes the ground preparation by the farmer (£300). Stakes, wire, ground anchors etc, the vines, netting. Perhaps o should do a video on breaking down the costs... Anyway, the next set of major expenditure is equipment to harvest and process the grapes. The other vineyard expenditure I foresee in the future is possible netting for the vines and and spraying that needs to be done.

Thanks for the videos. I cant find anywhere how far apart the stakes should be if the vines are say 6ft apart. Would it be if the end post about 30 ft apart and support stakes at 9ft in from either end? Or do i need more support stakes? If I have this wrong with planting distance for 4 vines please correct me.

Hi Ian. Apologies for not replying before now. I must admit, I thought that the the distances between stakes was very important - to the extent, that I got tape measures out etc. However, in practice the stakes are really on there to support the trellis line, the catch wire and ultimately the weight of the foliage of the developing leaf wall. A stake and galvanised wire will support a lot of weight. Our vines are approximately 1.5m apart (5 feet) and we have a stake every 4 vines. Your set up sounds fine. The trellis line is pulled tight while the catch wires can be much looser.
