A lot of studios have options for late starters. I was thrown right into a class at my age and it was embarrassing and so hard at first, I cried the first week of classes. It really sucked haha! But after I started getting it, it was worth it. What I did was email the studio and explained my situation. I really think you should give it a shot. Ballet changed my life. If there's a way you can do it, you should do it even if it's scary. Please give it a shot! No one should go their lives without a ballet class!! Let me know if you email them and what happens. Don't be afraid! Almost always people want people to dance, they'll most likely be excited you join. Good luck!

You should totally join! Even if you don't go pro I think you'll find how much more fun and enjoyable it is now that you're older. That's how it was for me. Plus since you do have some previous experience you'll know the basics, as long as you know the basics like the positions, what a tendu, plie, and relevé is, you'll be able to catch up quickly. I think you should at least take it up as a hobby and go from there! Let me know how it goes girly!💗💗

Hi! I'm 14 and I started almost 7 or 8 months ago, I live in a country where there aren't many good and strict teachers, I at the start of 2020 I started going to class with an amazing teacher in a class for adult ballet dancers with formation, so basically, I was thrown in with a bunch of somewhat professionals, at first it was daunting, plus I discovered that my feet are the worst! (my whole family has terrible flat feet) but I have improved so much! But then school started, so the schedule wouldn't work for me, my teacher recommended another academy and that is the one I am going to at the moment, well through zoom actually, and I started pointe like a month ago. So for anyone in this situation I'd say start! The most important thing you need to do is dedicate your time and energy to improving technique, flexibility, strength, and everything else!

You are amazing! I'm in a similar situation as you - I'm 16 but only started ballet when I was 14. I really want to go en pointe but my studio is only 4 years old and there are only 6 people in my ballet class (most are also beginners) so my dance teacher is trying to decide if she should make another pointe class. I only do ballet 2 hours a week - I wish I could do it more! I love it so so so much. ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for an amazing video that I can relate to!
@kelseyanne13
@kelseyanne13 4 жыл бұрын
Oh I get that situation with the classes! My studio is new also and there's only four people in my class! I know it can get difficult and frustrating with stuff like that. A way you could maybe do it more is by asking your studio owner if they need any assistance in the younger classes. I did this so now I get an extra hour of ballet (it's basic stuff but it's good extra practice with the basics, and it's just some more studio time at the least!) but you should see if they need anyone to help out with the younger classes because it's super fun when all the little girls look up to you. You also get volunteer hours by helping out which look great for college. I know you said that you don't have many people at your school so they might not need anyone if the classes are smaller but you should definitely ask about it! I'm sure you're a beautiful dancer and continue to work hard! Much love

I’m 14 and i really want to start ballet, but I’m not that flexible. So i was wondering, when you started ballet, were you flexible beforehand? Or did you just gradually get flexible?
@emmac5128
@emmac5128 4 жыл бұрын
@@celinadahllarsen That's great to hear, you should definitely do it! Well I did gymnastics for many years but I was never very flexible as I didn't stretch out of class or anything. But when I started ballet at 14 I stretched so much beforehand so that I could catch up to the people who have been doing it for years, and I also stretched out of class. I can happily say it has paid off as I am now the most flexible person in my ballet class, which helps a lot especially when it comes to barrework and exams! Before your classes begin (not sure where you are but I'm Australian and we're still in lockdown) I would recommend gently stretching beforehand and get further down in the splits, start working on your turnout (if you don't know what that is there should be some youtube videos on it) and also work on back flexibility which is extremely important (I didn't know about this until I started ballet but it is vital for things like arabesques and centre work). Also, a lot of people starting ballet think that ballet is just about flexibility, when I would say it is just as much about strength, so it would be a good idea to also start working on leg strength and core strength too! Hope this helps! x

I do dance and I’m overweight. I don’t think it’s any problem! When you go to a class you go to learn. For example, you wouldn’t go to math class is u already know math. It’s the same for dance. You start off inflexible and you practice and learn to get better. I would love to see the ballet community grow! Whenever there’s a new kid in my class I get so happy but it rarely happens.

I started ballet roughly 4 months ago and I'm 15. I have always had a connection with music, and im also a gymnast so the flexabilty came easily. I used to play like 4 instruments but I've always been drawn to dance. I started ballet because i love moving in time to the music and the technique because of the technicalities of gymnastics. Ballet combined my two favorite things music and(obviously not tumbling) but a sport that requires flexabilty and stuff like that. I only go to a rec school and I'll never go on pointe cuz i have horrible feet that I've had surgeries on several times. I get discouraged at times because I'll never be en pointe, but i always remeber why i love it, how happy it makes me and so on, ❤️❤️❤️

You definitely should check out your local studios and see if they accept late starters. What I did, was I talked to my dad and I told him that I wanted to look into starting ballet again, so we looked around to some studios and either called or emailed them, explained my situation and then from there picked a school. I don't think that you're too young to start but if you pick a studio and they don't have beginners classes for teens then I would make it clear that you really are going to work your hardest. Many professional ballerinas started late and still achieved their dreams, as long as you take action and work hard once you get into a ballet school, anything will be possible. I definitely think you should look into starting at a local studio, I definitely think it'll work out. Let me know if you start attending classes I'd love to hear all about it! 💗

I'm 17 and I'm finally going back to it after maybe 6 years of not dancing it? The first time around I was serious about ballet that I wasn't. I'd make sure I'm early before class and would be so bothered in school cause I might be late to exams. Then I got sick and wasn't able to make it for one class, and it continued and I felt lazy and unmotivated (I didn't know it at that time). And eventually, I stopped going. It took a toll on me the year after like something was missing. I do different styles of dancing but nothing compares to the rush of ballet. And it's really expensive where I live so it's pretty much a luxury. But I got an opportunity just right now and I'm so nervous and excited, I know there will be girls who'll be better than me but at the end of the day I'm going to do my best. I'm going to do everything I can for this, and for myself. So I'm telling you if you've read this all the way here, don't be scared to start or restart late. We can do this.

When I was around 5, I danced ballet for 2 years. I then tried out figure skating, hip hop and eventually swam competitively (8-9 years old). I am currently 13 years of age, and I have missed ballet ever since I've stopped. I suppose I didn't return to ballet, reason being I tried out other sports. I am not doing anything in particular at the moment, but I do have somewhat of a dancers figure, plus I am pretty flexible. I have been asked multiple times if I dance. I remain active as much as possible, I do participate regularly in athletic activities, for instance- I still swim a lot (not competitively), I often go out on to jogs. In addition I eat somewhat healthy, I consume tons of veggies, as well as fruits, white rice, cooked salmon, eggs, mushrooms as well as nuts, but that's just to name a few. I am quite fortunate to come from a family that is financially stable. And I am being supported no matter what. I have decent grades, I excell in mathematics and geography. I am also taking an advanced cyber course, and have just joined my school's national debate team. I have always fawned over ballet, and I have been missing it for the past years. My mother found a sufficient ballet school in the vicinity. I am thinking on trying it out once again, around April (by then I will officially be 14). What's more is that, if I will truly love the possible lessons that I might try attending, then I want to do it seriously, and if possible have it as my career. Don't get me wrong I do adore ballet, however you will never know until you try it. I remain somewhat fearul for some apparent reason, that people will judge me (that's probably why I had laid/put it off for so long). I'm also thinking that it is too late for me to fully indulge in the art form. I simply want to know, if it isn't too late for me to become a professional ballet dancer. I know that I am thinking too big, laying out goals to achieve step by step is the way, but I am afraid of not succeeding. I am well aware that these are foolish thoughts, but is there really a chance for me? Much obliged for reading this, relatively contradictory of a comment (English isn't my mother language, so hopefully I didn't make any grammar mistakes).

I legit took ballet classes when I was 3-4 then quit, wanted to go back at around 12-14 which was recreational since my parents said I was too old for ballet, other then that my parents wanted me to do other sports so they tried hiphop, volleyball, swimming gymnastics and ballet, I loved all except the ones I truly was passionate about was ballet, I wanted to go to ballet classes but my parents still said to me that I was too old, so I just left it there until I started coming across a lot of influencers who started ballet late, I would also love to go professional but unfortunately even if I try my hardest to convince my parents they prob don’t have the money😳 atleast im doing classes through KZbin just so I know few combinations and techniques, you really inspire me a lot!! I’m atm 17, I’m not sure if I can ever go professional but it doesn’t hurt to try!!

Im gonna leave my opinion as a pre-professional ballerina whos been dancing for 8 years, i personally started at 4 so this could just be from what ive seen dont take it personal! 2-7 are the best ages to start ballet, you will develop the discipline, basics, form and flexibility easier then someone who starts later on 8-12 this is the age that "starting late" wont affect much, your bones are stiff by now but easier to stretch the hamstrings out, you will learn more of the discipline then form easier at this age, as for flexibility shouldnt be that hard if you really try 13-20 these are those ages people start to question is ballet tp late to join, i will be honest with you completely. If youre trying to join a company or school then that is definitely harder, not only will you have to work on all form, flexibility, discipline, arches and combos harder then someone who starts younger then 12 but en pointe is gonna be tough since your bones are stiffer and will be hard to develop muscle in the kneess to support the arch and hamstrings. Again this all depends on whatever genes you inherited. 21+ most professional companies or ballet schools dont accept over this age unless youve trained there before or youre a qualified coach, i dont reccomend going on pointe unless your fully sure you are ready

i did ballet and tap when i was in elementary school. i went from 1st to 3rd, so 3 years. i stopped because i got tired of the 2 hours practices. but i was also young and didnt take it very seriously. i startdd wanting to do ballet again. i asked my mom a year ago if i could start again, and she said no because i have been away from it for to long. i cried. my life isnt really leading anywhere. i dont do sports. so im doing nothing in free time but watch tv. i need to do something, and i want to do ballet. i feel like i was made for ballet and i got super upset when my mom said no to me a year ago. im going to ask both of my parents again tomorrow. but im super scared they are going to say no. but i will do anything it takes to be put back into ballet. ive really got a passion for it. yeah, i quit because of the long practices. but im for real this time. im older, and i really wanna do something other than watch tv. wish me luck. ill update after they answer... 😬

I used to do ballet when i was 4-10 but I stopped bc of Covid. I wanted to wait for a face-to-face ballet lessons and I really want to go back and do it. Ballet keeps me happy and busy but over the months I became insecure about myself and afraid what people will think about me. Maybe one day I will go back hopefully. I miss it fitting for costumes and dancing on stage because it felt like I was in a show acting. Im praying I will have the guts to go back soon enough

Girl I get it, I was not born with much flexiblity at all. How I was able to get my splits was by watching "alivia d' andrea" and her videos, they're super inspiring and good to follow along to. I guess the main thing is to stay consistent and stretch daily, I know how impossible this is and it's frustrating and most days you just don't want to, but if you stay consistent and are pushing yourself even the slightest bit more everyday, you'll see results pretty quickly. Just be sure to go slowly when pushing yourself into stretches because you can injure yourself! I hope I was able to help!

Hi! I’m 14 I started ballet 2 months ago. I did dance from age 6-11 I believe (I technically took my first dance class in pre school but just some tap lessons) anyways I stopped at age 11 because of Covid because my family was at high risk and also dancing 4 hours a day in a mask is no fun lol. But the past year I was really missing it and I got the opportunity to join a pre professional ballet company so I did! I’m the oldest and tallest in my class and also probably the worst but I’m really trying to not compare myself too much because I know I had a lot of time off where I wasn’t doing dance and although I did do ballet in the time period I did dance I didn’t do a whole lot of it. Now I’m in nutcracker and all the girls my age are in pointe roles like snowflake and sugarplum fairy’s but I have to wait until next year to do those parts! This year I’m on non pointe rolls like soldier and Russian dancer. There are actually a few other girls around my age doing those parts as well so it’s really not bad! I’m just staying optimistic until next year when I’ll be a lot more caught up with the girls who are my age :) Sorry I’m trying to not make this comment super long but I want to add on to the making friends part of dance. For me because I’m placed in a class with younger girls it’s harder to talk to them but I do make some small conversations with them. I’m planning to start making most of my ballet friends next year when I can be in the snowflake and sugarplum scenes with them and I’ll have more opportunities to talk with all those girls my age! Hopefully I remember this comment so in a year I can update everything and how things are doing.

Also, do you have any suggestions on the ankle workouts you were talking about? Is there anything I can do at home to prepare for ballet (learning things like tendu, plié, positions)? Also since I did jazz last year, I have pretty good flexibility (I can do the splits, leg hold up to my face, leaps, single pirouettes 😅). Omg I’m so sorry for asking so many questions but I’m really eager to know haha!! Thank you so much!!💛

I’m 15 and I’m trying to get back into ballet it’s my dream I did it from 2-7 and again at 10 I’m in a dancing show choir but it’s not anything like ballet all the studios near me are very very serious so I’m scared I won’t be allowed to do it so I don’t know if it’s worth it or if I could even get to point or at a good level for a career in three years for college :( Should I take private lessons or get thrown into a class with little kids?

So first off, I don't think they'd throw you in class with little kids, yes they probably wouldn't be your age but they'd probably be around 13. Your ability may be less than theirs but they'll just expect more from you. When I got into ballet again and I took my first class I left crying because I had such a hard time in the class with the 12-13 year olds and I was like omg. But my teacher said, we're not putting you with the younger kids, were just going to need to see you work hard. If you can afford private lessons I don't think those would hurt, you could always see about taking private lessons over the summer and then when school starts up, you can join one of the actual classes with other students? It's up to you but I highly doubt they'd put you with any kids younger than 13!

When I was 12 I went to beginner gymnastics, I was with 6 year olds. Now I’m 13, if I joined ballet would the same thing happen?

Find a studio and see when they have classes available, whatever you can make work then do it. As long as you're strong and working hard you'll most likely go on pointe quickly, but be prepared to work hard. Good luck!

I can find a studio that offers classes for late starters and it’s so annoying. I’m 14, I didn’t ballet for a year when I was 8 but I ended up quitting for a stupid reason.
