I randomly stumbled upon this video after browsing through other dev logs from small creators and just gotta say this is one of the few series I’m actually looking forward to following! I love how you get straight into the development process and don’t clog the video with filler. The isometric perspective will definitely be unique compared to most other games and I’m surprised you don’t know much about colors considering how your colors already look fantastic. If you're going to do your collisions in 2D you can collide against the convex hull of your sprite, which you can determine by finding the contours of the non transparent pixels and then triangulating using delaunay or ear clipping triangulation. You can use the same method for generating walkable area meshes to make sure your player stays on appropriate surfaces

This looks fantastic so far. A few suggestions that came to mind: - browse LoSpec for a color palette since it will give you a set of colors that work together and also help remove decisions on colors based on the palette. I believe one of Adam Younis’ vídeos talked about palettes and making that decision early has helped a lot. - with your island ideas, try to sketch out other arrangements (lake on middle, lake on corners that aren’t bottom right) to see how the camera works and if you will be able to get away with not moving left/right. Maybe the Cinemachine asset has some settings you can use for isometric following camera.
@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev Жыл бұрын
Hey. That's great advice, thanks! I will experiment more with the camera to make sure it works as intended. As for colors, I'm trying to improve my pixel art skills, so I think learning to pick colors myself is a good step in that direction. That said, I think Lospec is a great place to start when building your own palette, and I actually use it from time to time.

@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev 9 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks a lot! The software I use for making pixel art is called Aseprite. If you're having trouble with coding, I recommend taking a course or two (even on KZbin) that can teach you how to create simple and small games. This will help you understand the basics and build a strong foundation of knowledge. It's okay to take things step by step. Once you have a good grasp of the basics, you'll be able to continue learning on your own. That's been my experience, at least.

Thank you so much for your kind words and support! It's really encouraging to hear that you're also pursuing game development, and I wish you all the best on your journey. Finding the right balance between game development and content creation can definitely be a challenge. I've experienced firsthand how much time and effort it can take to create a polished video while also making progress on your game project. For example, it took me a month to edit this video, and I ended up reshooting it like six times until I was happy with how it turned out. To be honest, I'm still figuring things out myself, and I don't think I have all the answers. But I believe it's all about finding a balance that works for you. You seem to have been in the KZbin game for longer than me so perhaps you can give me some advice.🙂

@@LostGameDev It's a graft for sure. I'm trying to treat each new video as a chance for me to develop some skills. I'm still trying to figure out how to feel comfortable on camera and how to come across well. Probably easier for some people but I've really struggled with it. It can be really tough to see all the flaws at times but, it's that whole thing of failing fast and failing often which hopefully is leading me to a place of experience. I’ve worked with some successful influencer types who say, just be yourself to get the most out of it, if you're persistent the right crowd will eventually appear. So I'm hoping that's true

Hello, thanks for the video! Did you have sorting problems with isometric tilemap having multiple Y levels and player being taller than 1 tile? Because when I move player some back tiles randomly popping and getting in front of player Or you are not implemented proper sorting yet? I am trying to make multiple-y-level isometric game too but sorting is huuuge pain for me in that scenario, because it is not so easy to sort dynamic objects that are bigger in size than a tile and if they can be moved freely in any direction
@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev Жыл бұрын
Hey! Sorting sprites in an isometric tilemap can be tricky, but the way I handle it is by sorting the sprites based on their Y position, specifically their pivot point. You also want to make sure that your player character and objects are on the same sorting layer for it to work properly. Hope that helps!

first off, very well edited video nice job and im loving the artstyle you've shown though im guesing most of it is a place holder for now now for the collision, although I have never worked with isometric games in Unity 2d i think I have an idea... there is a unity component called Edge Collider or Polygon Colider that could be used but the still have to be manually placed... sadly I don't have the time to actually test to see if it would work and i ofc dont know how you coded your character controller to begin with but this still may help you

Hey, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you like the art style, although you're right that much of it is still just a placeholder at the moment. Regarding the collision, I appreciate the tip. I'll definitely look into that and see if it can help me solve the problem. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts and offer suggestions - it really means a lot! 😊

@@LostGameDev I mean to ask how you get the water working so that half of the player's body is able to enter the water without it being ahem "collidable". Just a question of mine since I've been getting into game dev and thought it might be useful to learn.

Since the game is working with blocks, maybe make a statement of each block created if the player can collide with or not I didn't watch the end yet xD
@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! In the second devlog (you can find it on the channel), I tried implementing a character movement system where you control your character with the mouse, and each block had a 'blocked' property to restrict movement. However, I ended up ditching that idea since it didn't quite fit the game. I switched to using polygon colliders, which turned out to be a lot easier to work with.😊

Gray color you used on the house's base and roof is really bland an uninviting. I'd play with a shade of gray on the base and changed the roof to blue. Also I suggest you figuring out color scheme first, one that is made nicely will do wonders for your game's style, and there are tools to generate them!
@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the feedback! The colors are just temporary, intended to provide some basic visual interest while I continue developing the game, and will be changed in the future. I totally agree that a good color scheme can make a big difference, and I plan to experiment with different options as I continue working on the art.☺

Was it just me or did anyone else also prefer the 'colours' before he added the actually colour, like the orange and purple look??
@LostGameDev
@LostGameDev Жыл бұрын
I mean there's nothing wrong with that. The orange/brown and purple were kinda cool, but they weren't gonna be permanent. But even those that I added after are temporary. I'm still playing around with different schemes, so we'll see where it goes.😅
