In this video we'll start from ZER0 to talk about what synthesizers are and how they work, using the oscillator and other circuits in the 0-Coast and 0-CTRL to demonstrate. You don't need to know ANYTHING about synthesis to understand this video, but even experienced synthesists might get something out of it!

I've owned the 0-Coast for almost 2 years now, and in the meantime have been busy building a modular system. So I see my local vendor has a sale on, and lo and behold, 15% off the 0-Ctrl, so I finally ordered it today, it's already shipping, I'll have it tomorrow. Can't wait to test it out. Clocking it at audio rate and using it to transpose? I wouldn't have thought of that. Going through the whole series of videos now. Cheers!

Currently exploring my way around the 0-Coast that I bought myself for Xmas (lucky me!), and the more I watch and experiment the more I come to appreciate that- despite owning a Keystep 37- I also need a 0-Ctrl. The added value is that I also have a couple of semi-modular Behringer synths, so it will see good use. Or so I’m telling myself...

Walker, this is great and thank you for continuing to share your enthusiasm and knowledge with us. I've always wondered about transposing with the 0-Coast. The STO has an expo input (that seems fixed) while the DPO has expo that can be attenuated. What would be the method to do this on the 0-Coast? Would there be a way to send a sequence from 0-Ctrl to 0-coast and transpose?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the STO Expo input is fixed and follows 1v/oct (it's basically just a duplicate of that input, and the two are summed together with the knob). On the 0-Coast you could mix your transpose voltage with the main sequence using the voltage math: put the sequence in the left input, which comes through at unity, and the transpose voltage in the right, then patch the output to 1v/oct. If using MIDI for a main sequence you could patch your transpose voltage straight to the 1v/oct, it will be summed with the MIDI notes and the Pitch knob.

0-CTRL is so inspiring, can’t wait to get mine! I had assumed the variable gate on 0-Coast’s contour was the only recipient of dynamic pressure - are the touch plates actually sending variable cv that can control anything? Could be amazing for Zone on the Mimeophon for example.
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
There is a Pressure CV output that corresponds to how hard you are pressing the touch plates. There is also a Touch Gate that just goes high whenever you are touching one or more. Then there is also the Dynamic Gate and Envelope outputs, three CV outputs that correspond to the knob settings in the Pitch, Strength, and Time channels, and eight additional gates, one per Step, one of which is high at any time. The Dynamic Gates are made with the 0-Coast Contour Gate in mind, but you can patch anything anywhere :D

Hey Walker. Like the others you’ve done, I enjoyed this video. I think there is some primal correlation between big things and small pitches and small things and high pitches. You doing the high voice made me think of a mouse. Small animals have smaller voice boxes and typically make smaller noises. Most of the time the opposite is true for larger animals… of course, sometimes, greater range is the result.

Love my Make Noise, and Any definition of Sound must include an acknowledgement of vibration, with out vibration there can be no sound. Might help. So, an oscillator is a specific circuit designed to vibrate at a fixed rate but any circuit such as the slope that starts to vibrate with a regular shape can be perceived or conceived as a pitched sound.
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
Well-stated! I guess what I was hoping to get across was that the vibrations in the synth aren't actually moving the air until they are amplified. At the same time, I managed to talk about oscillation and sound for 17 minutes without using the word "vibration!" Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for this! I've been wondering how best to use the CV and Gate outputs in the lower left corner (below MIDI B indicator light). Where are they generated and can I use them to patch back into the 0-Coast?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 2 жыл бұрын
The MIDI B CV and Gate outputs are typically assigned to MIDI signals using the Program Pages. If you are not using MIDI they can be set to triangle (CV) or square (Gate) LFO whose rate is set by tapping PGM_A. Take a look at the sticker on the bottom of the 0-Coast for instructions on these settings.

Great information and background. Appreciate it. Hey, quick one...is the 'pinning' thing you mentioned in a previous video something I need to be careful of when patching in to the dynamics input on the 0-Coast? I noticed that you generally have that knob fully clockwise.
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 2 жыл бұрын
The Dynamics knob is an attenuator, not a panel control, and the Contour and Slope are tuned to be useful with it through the full range. Multiply and Overtone are more likely to get "pinned" in this way - in fact if you pin Multiply with a negative voltage you can make it go silent under certain conditions, which could be a fun thing to take advantage of ⚡️🎶

Very cool! Quick question, when the 0-control is clocked at audio rates, does the envelope output produce a sawtooth?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC

Something close to it, anyway. There is an exponential decay to the envelopes, and they can also be "flat" at the top at higher Strength settings (a short "sustain phase" is added).

Why do some outputs do 0 to 10 volts, some 0 to 8, zero to 5, etc?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
We design the ranges of outputs and inputs based around their likely pairings. For example sequencer outputs are often used for pitch, so a 5V range is good - most acoustic instruments don't have a five octave range, and more than that will start making it very difficult to dial in particular pitches. Gates we usually make 10V high just to maximize the likelihood that they will interact with absolutely any gate input in your system. 8V is typical for an envelope or function because it is the typical input range of a VCA. On MATHS the functions can go up to 10V because, again, it is made to be as universal as possible, and work with absolutely any input. Hope that all makes some sense!
