I lost my home, everything to fire 🔥 in 2021. It was an exhausting process to rebuild it took 3 years but I came through it. The insurance company has resources. Talk to others who have been through it. I did it alone and I rebuilt a new home and a new life and I’m better on the other side of the fire. It’s been very challenging emotionally physically financially I was burned and almost killed, but I’m fine at 63 years old. The only thing I care about was losing a dog other than that really is just stuff. Don’t sweat losing the stuff, look forward to starting a completely fresh life. I really wouldn’t change a thing at this point it’s really been a blessing for me. I pray for you as you rebuild your life. At some point you’ll look up and you’ll be on the other side of it with a new home and new opportunities. I did take some of the insurance money and I paid off my prior mortgage because I didn’t need to rebuy everything that I lost, so that was actually a blessing, and then I built the home of my dreams to replace the home I lost by adding some money of my own. Stay well and move forward!

As someone who grew up in Lahaina and has a lot of displaced family members there from the fire, I am really appreciative of this thoughtful and compassionate response. Thank you both, love your work and insights.

Great episode. I would add "don't despise the transition". Embrace it and enjoy the adventure of it. And above all, be grateful.

Whatever you do, don’t let stuff weigh you down.

You need comfortable beds and bedding, that's a high priority. You can buy second hand a table and chairs. A new sofa which is comfortable and within an agreed budget. Most likely, this can move into your future permanent home. Smaller pieces of furniture: coffee table, side table, night stands etc can be second hand. A vase for fresh flowers, a couple nice lamps to make the temporary abode feel personal to you and your family. These will also move with you. You have been through an extraordinary challenging event. Some comfort is important now.

This transition will be over before you know it. 😀 I love that slow population approach too. You can bring bits of your future to life in the now without overencumbering yourself.

I'm on my minimalist journey for sure, but like you both say, at that time I'd want to think straight, and save the money for the new place. And also think very thoroughly about the things I still had and weren't adding to my life, so I can avoid buying them again.

The 'fantasy' of your perfect home, of what we think we need'..... hmmmm great things to ponder.
