Starting the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail! (BVRT) // Bike Touring Australia Ep. 69

After sharing a wonderful evening with another fantastic Warmshowers host, we make our way through the urban sprawl of Ipswich to Wulkaraka Station and the start of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail!
It feels great to be away from the traffic after spending so many days on highways and busy roads, with the last few days of urban stroads taking a particularly heavy toll.
Our first priority is to pick up some supplies and after meeting another pair of bike tourers on the route, we decide to have an early finish at Lowood Showgrounds.

D&B Cycling Australia is a video series documenting our time bicycle touring Australia; a bicycle tour led by our desire to seek out roadside attractions -- everything from the interesting and quirky, to the macabre and obscure.
We had initially planned on bike touring Australia as the first leg of an around the world bike tour, but the Covid-19 Pandemic that struck mid way through the trip forced us to change our plans and extend our Australian cycling adventure.
Thankfully Australia is a huge country with plenty to see, so we'll continue cycling around Australia until it's time to move on to the next adventure.

Love the blue skies! (Must be Queensland) Thanks for this instalment of your Aussie Odyssey, Dave and Bonnie! It must have been really terrific to get away from the traffic for a while - or quite a while, by the sound of what you said about the BVRT. Yes, strange thing about sunscreen in the winter, isn't it? Gives you an idea of why Australia is the #1 country for skin cancer (so we're told).

Any time, Simon! Yep. I'm really envious of the work the Rails to Trails conservancy is doing in the USA - A network of rail trails covering the entire country. A dream come true!

Sounds like the lost dog and goat on bit of a walkabout adventure 🤣 great video BVRT on my list of places to ride through and the glass house mountains for landscape photography i can not wait to get up there.

Great stuff. That's on my bucket list!!! So far you guys have had no issues doing it with touring bikes. Is it all doable by touring bike?

Sure is! We didn't have any issues and without the luggage it would've been pretty easy! We had to push up a couple of gullies which I could see being a bit tough if it was really wet, but not insurmountable. A lot of guys ride it on fancy full suspension mountain bikes, but I'd happily do it on a $200 hybrid - which is what rail trails are all about! This was before all the flood damage though, so I can't comment on current conditions. Definitely have a go. It's a really great trail! 😁
