One thing I’m doing to build relationships with my people is to meet newcomers at the airport. We are an international school and newcomers need to have that first good impression of the new place that are coming to. When school starts, I will schedule meetings with teachers individually and as a section team to build that professional relationship.

For new APs, remember differentiated instruction when putting meeting or PD sessions together. Not everyone learns well with high levels of collaboration and interaction, contrary to popular belief. I hate highly interactive PD sessions... I didn’t sign up to teach a PD so don’t have me turning and talking or a gazillion breakout session where we need to report back or any activity that there are assigned roles especially a recorder...put together a sound informative session, handouts are great to refer to later...but allow me some time to listen and as you said reflect on your topic and presentation without worrying about preforming and dialoguing with peers so I can learn rather than perform.

I am new school leader and excited for finding a new position. I get very excited at the interview process and have rehearsed and researched much on the subject. Any tips for staying focused or serving the process? Particularly the full committee meetings can be intimidating and I understand the position they have to wonder, what makes me think I can do this job if i have never done it before?

April, you are going to make mistakes. Do not let fear of making mistakes keep you from moving forward. The best way to overcome the "what makes her think she can do this job" question is to be transparent. It's ok to say, "I'm learning this with you" or "we are learning this together." Everyone has to be new once. Being new can actually be a benefit. People understand when you say, "this is the first time I've run across this, so let me look into it and get back to you." This actually gives you time, so you do not have to feel like you are rushed all of the time. Best of luck this year!
