In this episode of Paint Perspective, Joe, James and George discuss starting Warhammer in 2023. George got into Warhammer 40k in 2018, Joe in 2004 and James in 1994 - so you have three completely difference sets of experiences.
Along with that - a game of Command, Reserve, Purge (Start, Bench, Sell for any sports fans reading this) where we discuss who we'd rather paint out of Abaddon, Guilliman and The Lion, plus our preferred painting techniques out of Airbrushing, Drybrushing or Contrast Paints.
We also take on our question of the week, where we'll discuss one model that we've struggled to finish.
So... this is starting Warhammer in 2023!

Context.. I started Warhammer in June this year I’m 41. I got the citadel paint starter pack with paints, brush and sprue cutters. I also bought the starter magazine that comes with necron and space marine model. Everyone should just get that to start, it’s easy to make decisions on what’s next. I bought a CSM terminator Lord, a small citidel brush, a couple of extra paints and my friends pointed me in the direction for where I could see the data sheet for that character. I’m loving it

Im late here but as someone who just started a few weeks ago and just wrecked my first set of synthetic brushes and just purchased my first sable brush, id recommend starting with synthetic brushes. I appreciated the lessons from the evolution of watching what happens when you dont take care of them, the struggle of painting when they start to split, and the importance of a sharp tip and brush care. I think using gear that isnt high end to start, lets you appreciate why things are high end when you switch to them

Great episode! My first models were lead Eldar. Naturally I made a complete mess of them with the worst glues and techniques. Amusingly, most of those sculpts are still about!

I think getting into it, cheap brushes are probably better. I know when I first started (March 2021) I wasn't even aware that brushcare was a thing I had to be aware of; I think what Joe was saying, that there's an assumed level of knowledge to even be aware of proper brushcare, was pretty accurate. You have to know that you need to take care of your brushes a particular way in order to know you need to find out how to do it, and if you're a beginner whose knowledge of brushcare starts and ends with "I washed it out in the pot, it'll be fine", you're not going to find out you need to look after the brush until after you've already destroyed one.

Having never heard of Mitrebond, I was definitely doing some head scratching on this one trying to figure out what James was going on about. I was investigating into Mighty Bond and Mylar Bond both before I came across Mitrebond, lol. I’ll give it a go and see if I can find why James is so set on it. Love your videos, thank you!

Great chat as always! Got into Warhammer back in 95/96. But my dad painted my minis due to me having no intrest then doing it. Then around 00/01 i found other intrests and picked it up again in 2021 after following progression on youtube.

cheers for the podcast. i usually try and find something vaguely relevant to say just to add a comment for the algorithm, but thats all i got today. i guess +1 for killteam/warcry as the starter and in the snog/marry/avoid were ditching g-man, hes a distant 3rd.

Had a few new friends get into 40k recently and it seems to have been mega for them to know the essentials bits to have streight away like wet pallets and lamps ect. They getin models done and Gaming with them way faster than I did when I 1st started learning it all from scratch. Finding what works and doesn't. KZbins a god send but also some videos can confuse things a little.

For me it wasn't just my first model that was rubbish, or my first few models, it was the entire Indomitus box that I ruined 🤣 I think this is my cue to finally invest in some nice brushes. I have been using cheap brushes for a couple years now and they can't keep up anymore. Also the Command,Reserve,Purge idea is fantastic!

From the POV of someone who started painting in mid 2020, I have to disagree that a beginner will just destroy their brushes. My first brushes were sable hair brushes, I still have them now, and they're still in decent condition. From watching a few videos before buying things, I knew sable hair brushes needed looking after, and so I learnt how to do just that before buying them. A little time spent learning before making any purchases can help avoid most issues a typical beginner will face.

Yep I taught myself too. It was hard and while building a box set l didn't really know if I would like the game. Fortunately I loved it and so did my friends. Necromunda for the people!

Great episode! Couple of things; I think your motivation for getting people ‘into the hobby’ needs to match those peoples’ interests, or you need to strongly curb you bias when you’re introducing it. The other factor around starting the gaming side now, is that GW provides a fairly streamlined way of intro-ing through the combat patrol boxes, and all the rules and cards are free and downloadable. So there’s not even a need to buy the 2-faction starter boxes. I got a friend into the gaming this way as he’s not very interested in the painting side

Another great show chaps. Those hours fly by! My extra caveat to only comparing your work against your own is to also take every online picture with a grain of salt. Digital photography and editing allows us to portray a perfection that most often doesn't exist in person. This is why mini painting comps tend to happen in person so the paintjob can be seen for real. So don't beat yourself up that your paint job isn't matching the popular stuff on social media. Also, the push to fit minis in Leviathan have come along leaps and bounds. If you do want to use glue then clip off at least half the length of every peg to give the glue some room as the tolerances on these P2F minis are minute.

Thanks so much! Completely agree. Image editing can be very misleading depending on the intention of the person editing the photo!

Great episode, really insightful. I would argue that’s it’s probably more challenging to get started now due to the sheer amount of info available, also the advent of social media for a highly visual hobby also creates its challenges. Do think heading to a GW store is underrated if your starting out.

I started with a synthetic cheap brush to avoid destroying an expensive one, after a week or so of everyday painting I realized that something is just wrong and what I'm doing when applying the paint does not behave like what the dudes on youtube were doing. And the tip was getting bent all the time. Then I bought a 10$ brush and immediately felt like I doubled my power. I really think you should start with cheap stuff for your first session or first few solo sessions unless instructed and guided IRL maybe.

Really interesting hearing different peoples experience of starting the hobby through the last 20 years. I was lucky when i was 10 a friend of mine wanted to collect but had no interest in painting. Built armies and played together. 28 years later and i still love the hobby. Agree that its alot easier these days but also more intimidating, and the boxed games are a good place to start.

So glad I stumbled onto this as a Gundam model painter who was looking to hand paint better. Totally agree with so many point on the "Just start, the first one is always bad" I did that with a cheap model after getting an Airbrush and I have to say that is the one Model (Looks terrible) that I would probably never throw away due to all the little lessons I learned from it. It also makes me happy when I look at my current work and see how far I have come as an artist who paints models for stress relief and fun. (Yes even with the aggravation when I muck up.) Really appreciate the depth you guys put into these episodes, and look forward to many more! Thank you for giving me a lot of things to try and a different way of looking at painting in general. Absolutely want to know what paint brushes are decent for relatively beginner hand painters and why. What truly makes a higher quality brush and why.

For gear, my advice is always "buy the best you can afford to ruin". I 100% agree with James. If you buy the cheapest possible you're going to "fight" it more than better brushes and as a newcomer, you may not realise it's the brush that's at fault. Not saying you go out and buy some really nice Kolinsky, but also don't buy the 15-brush multipack from the poundshop/dollar store (and whilst there avoid being tempted by the craft paints!)
@dougpridgen9682
@dougpridgen9682 11 ай бұрын
That may be, but buying a better brush isn't going to enable you to paint well. At the beginning I think the difference is negligible.

I'm about to start with my first models, I'm going for the Infernus Marines Paints Set. 3 models+ paints and getting some brushes and extra stuff with that. Probably gonna ruin those and restore em later haha, the plan is to go from the basics on those to a veteran set of the army I want and get a color set + wash set from Valejo. If anyone can comment on this plan, would be appreciated :)
