Turn Your SCRAP WOOD Into Gifts or CASH

It's the end of the year. It's Holiday season and you need gifts.
Time to just throw all your scrap wood into a pile and build whatever I can from it.
Then gift or sell what you make. Simple. right?....well.
This year was a test as the wood was not ideally shaped but I managed to get 7 really cool gifts from it that I am confident you can all make.
I have made the mistakes so you can hopefully avoid them. But if you don't., thats ok too.
The fun is in the build. The end result is sure to be loved regardless of whether you hit perfection or my usual 85%.

I really love the Taku Woodcraft jig. Nick Engler made a jig for the table saw for making these too. I'm going to try the butchers block coasters, those are lovely and simple enough to make and gift to a few people. Thanks Mark

23:15 So true! Before i got into woodworking i never thought about my store bought cutting boards. Now I checked them with a straight edge and they are so crap. The Radius on one side doesn't match the other side and so much more. The cutting boards i made for Christmas are not flawless. But NOBODY will notice. They are so much more beautiful than the store bought ones and that's what makes them perfect.

Scrapwood Challenge - Nothing wrong with using scrap wood for projects. I made a nice puzzle for my niece and nephew complete with a box and lid out of various scraps that would've ended up in a campfire.

I love taking scraps to make unique and useful things. I just made spatulas and tongs yesterday. My biggest seller is a fish shaped tool to pull and push hot oven racks.

IT was a really really weird find. Honestly at the back of a tourist tat shop I found a stack of olive wood. Like 500 pieces all around 7mm thick and 300 by 150 ish. So small and a little too thin but all with amazing figuring. It was not being given away but not silly priced. I was a little stunned and didnt buy anything first visit, had a coffee and then ran back and spend an hour looking through the pile for the most interesting. What a fun day. No ideas whether they sell much of it. Anyway, luckily for me I had spare weight allowance left. Anyway, the picture frames are fun, mine are a little dull but with a little imagination.... I didnt say in the video but they work loads better with a magnet in the middle too. Just to stop the paper sliding. you are spot on about my talking . I have found myself rabbititing on faster and faster to try and fit in all the details. And to be honest it doesnt all need to be said. But I am happy to have something I can improve. Had an idea too the other day to split all of my build videos down into smaller individual build videos and just load them onto a new channel with just very minimal chat. no real intro or outro, just AMSR ish. Anyway we will see if time allows. Take care bud

Mark, even with a band-saw, I find (depending on the width of the lumber [timber?]) I like re-sawing on my table saw. Just last week I was trying to flush cut a radius in a piece of mahogany...well where the grain changed direction caused a big divot. On to the next one. Nice thing about our vocation is that you can create plenty of firewood for the winter. These were nice projects and very handy to give someone who might be an acquaintance a nice homemade gift. Unfortunately all the women in my life (mother, wife, four daughters and two granddaughters) expect a whole lot more out of the shop. So here we go... Btw, the note stand at the end is brilliant. Another home run ( or, whatever, the cricket equivalent is), Mark. Now, can we find the rugby jumper.

Once again, great imagination, even when not using your own designs. You combine a few designs by others. 👍👍 I should try some of this stuff, I have scraps coming out my wrong end. Great tip, on chamfering end grain, so as not to chunk it out when planing. That's a great idea for cutting boards, because you will want to round off the edges anyway, just like your coasters.😷✌🖖

Did manage get a bit of 12mm MDF from Wickes to use for it (kitchen counter I think for 3 quid it's about 4 or 5ft square. So hopefully gonna use that some how. Mark, great gifts made from some of your scraps. I don't see much difference whether they are finished with lacquer or wax. I got into a habit of using a wipe-on oil or occasionally a paste wipe-on varnish when I can find it. I know there are spray cans of lacquer & other finishes that I haven't tried. I did watch the video by Woby Design. I will keep his jig in mind for a future use. It's simple, but it works. I prefer using toggle clamps to hold the stock rather than my fingers. If I ever make pencil holders, they won't be made from skateboards. Myself & my grown kids never had them, but we do have a skateboard park in a neighboring town. See you in your next video.

I've been making the Jinga piece ornaments lately. The hats and the snowmen. These can be found all over the internet. Book end plain wth the block plain, glue, clamp, sand paint. I'm going to try a modification on one. Using a smaller "tumbling tower" game from the dollar store for the Jinga pieces.

I have made multiple trivets that are bigger, safer and easier to build. My parents had one from the 1970’s and I saw it years later in woodsmith. If you want more information or pictures, let me know. There is a square one and a round one. Both are 7 inches. You do a one time setup for the router table. lock down the fence put blocks on both sides and run the wood down the fence then flip it to the other side and do it again. Once done, put in a 1” piece of wood along the fence (spacer block) and do the same process again. The do it again with a 2” piece of wood between the fence. Move the piece 45 degrees and complete all steps again, sand and Done! Once the router table is setup, it goes quickly. The nice thing about doing it this way, you don’t have any exposed interior router cuts.

At the moment I use a cheap 3 piece diamond plate set from Faithful. And then a strop. I probably could do with a very fine griot between 1000 and the strop for great results but it's pretty good. I also use the veritas honing guide in most cases.
