A great diplomat and a upstanding moral man with real virtues, but he's not a warrior or tactician by nature. If Pike is the hero the Federation deserves, Kirk is the dark knight that protects it. I think that's the heart of the episode, but it doesn't make Pike less great, nor Kirk, it makes both of them equal halves and genuinely perfect balance for Star Trek's Federation.

Spock is very loyal, and friendship is something he takes very seriously even as a Vulcan. Not only do we see it when he takes a Chris Pike crippled by Delta radiation on board the Enterprise to Talos IV even though that means the death penalty under General Order 7, or when he saves Kirk countless of times, basically disregarding his credo of "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one". That is why Kirk, when he spoke to Spock on Mount Seleya after his rescue from Genesis said about why he rescued Spock that "The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many".

This episode of Fake Trek, just like all of Duhscovery and seasons 1 & 2 of Pretendcard, was unnecessary. Season 3 of the latter show at least made an honest effort to do away with the Fake Trek junk and realign with the Canon Timeline.

I love how Pike doesn't hesitate to bend the security officer's arm back in an attempt to stop him from taking Una away. She's so important to him that he's ready and willing to subdue another Starfleet officer who's just following his orders.

Pike was placed in a very uncomfortable position. His First Officer arrested for being genetically modified or enhanced. I think that it is unfortunately. Because that young lady is NO Khan Noonien Singh - she stopped her own captain from getting into trouble. That proves that she upheld Starfleet Regulations by her own actions. She genuinely wanted to serve.

Exactly, there are big ethical issues one both sides. Yes, genetic modification is questionable, but how many Julian Bashirs, Thad Rikers, and Una Chin-O'Reillys have been lost because of the fear of Khan Noonien Singh? The fact that the Federation feels that letting someone DIE of a disease that could easily be fixed or arrest someone for something that was done to them as a child, is better than being augmented or modified, is every bit as questionable. Plus, what Una's people did actually seems like a better option. They modify themselves to suit the environment instead of making the environment suit them.

I really like the scene where he's walking around the bridge acknowledging his crew with "Makin' Memories", by Melissa Carper playing in the background. Despite his unpleasant future, Pike becomes more appreciative of what he has in the present and he knows that he will make many good memories in the time he has left. We all tend to worry about what might happen in the future, what we want but don't have, or how inadequete we might feel sometimes, However, Pike realizes that none of that matters in the here and now, as he learns to love who he is and the life he has in the present.

I I have to admit that my first impression of Star Trek strange new worlds was not that good. But this was before I had my hip replacement surgery, which I guess was on my mind while I was watching. Now that that is behind me, I have given it a second look… And I have done a 180° change in my opinion. I think this series is brilliantly written and acted and I admit my first impression was way off. I look forward to much more of this series most eagerly.

I'm never embarrassed that I can be wrong or to admit that I was. That's not a fault, that's life and an open mind.

We don't actually know whether other species in the Federation have had comparable drama with genetic modification. It hasn't come up in episodes related to them. But we do know from the series Enterprise, that the Klingons had a regrettable experience with it. ;-)

There are requirements to join the Federation. One of those is to sign up to a set of mutual values. There's a lot of leeway. But it includes things such as banning Slavery, and - in this case - outlawing certain genetic modifications. They don't go around conquering planets to change their culture, but if you want to sign up to the Federation, you need to adhere to their principles. Like any union of nation states.
