I'm certainly not an expert but I wonder if you might be placing too much emphasis on a diagonal take off for a bottom turn. A lot depends on the size and shape, and speed of the wave and the performance characteristic of your ski. A steep drop down the face of the wave or sometimes even a faded cut back drop if you execute a good bottom turn will place you right in the power pocket of the wave. You want to smoothly convert your kinetic energy from the drop into lateral acceleration to hit the lip or move to trimming using the rail, not pushing water with the nose of the ski. If you watch the rider in your videos when he re-enters he drops straight into the pocket and bottom turns. Best to have a mixed bags of many tricks.

Hi mate, thanks for your feedback. You are totally right about the bottom turns after a steep drop. But it needs experience to do that. And this video is for less experienced riders who are trying to work out there bottom turns and finding themselves loosing speed after a steep take off and a wave with too little energy. That's why I explain that example in the video and specifically mention that all beginners have that experience and that they are not surfing the waves now that have enough energy to do a bottom turn after a steep drop. (I don't think the surfers who are doing bottom turns after a steep drop need my tutorial to learn.) Well spotted in the footage that Bruce is doing bottom turns after a steep re-entry. I added that consciously to show exactly your point: if you have that energy in the wave and in your ride, you can pull of a bottom turn after a steep drop. But that's level 2 (or 3 ;-) ) of the bottom turn. Maybe I should have explained that better. I always appreciate the feedback mate. Cheers, Paul
