I had a bottle of the red wine finished whisky at 40% ABV. It was under £30 (on offer) and it was decent stuff. I usually buy whiskies like this when they're discounted, I always buy a Jameson's Black Barrel or an Aberlour 12 when they're giving it away. It's still good stuff at 40% but it could be better, cheers Jim! excellent review as always

I just had my first try of it. I get the impression that it’s not coloured, instead the colour comes from the nett longer active casks exposure. I think this because I get very little spirit heat, instead that clean fruit which I attribute to the time in cask. Unsure of the filtering, however to me it’s got a fuller mouth feel and longer finish which implies it’s probably not heavily chill filtered. - however I will see if I can find some cloudy mist. Very interesting, thanks for the review.

I had the chance to try a sample of this in a tasting set and I liked it a lot. You described it well-- it is good, but don't spend too much. In the interest of disclosure and transparency, I think it would be good for solera labeled whiskies to indicate the details of their system. It makes a difference if they are flowing through a vat, or allowing some time in the vat for each "batch". I imagine there is a lot of variation between brands. May the whisky force be with you, Jim.

After all those years of Sons & Daughters, The Flying Doctors, The Sullivans, Home & Away, Neighbours, A Country Practise, Prisoner Cell Block H ... and you come out with an Aussie accent like THAT! For shame, James, for shame!!! ;). Never heard of Starward, but glad that it's now on my radar. Cheers, mucker. :)

Starward is one of our better distilleries, especially in terms of affordability. If at all possible, I recommend picking up the Fortis or one of their experiments (which can include whisky finished in a ginger beer cask). Unfortunately the single cask releases seem to be very hit or miss for the overseas releases, but some of them can be absolutely divine. Bold red berries and fruits, touches of tropical notes and typical spices of cinnamon and cloves. My go to local distillery, and it’s brilliant to have one available.

Jim, on a side note... you are a star wars fan so you will be amused. My son was born in 1976 and we named him Luke. The first move, Star Wars, was released in 1977. You can imagine what he heard during his school years! But, we are both big Sar Wars fans as well. I think the force has been with him.

😄😄 yeah I can imagine he got some stick Bud. I've been one of those life long fans who's still stuck in the original trilogy. I like the newer ones but could have lived easily without them. I do like where they're heading with the Mandalorian though. Good to see them taking that "original trilogy" feel. Cheers man.

Haven’t heard ( until now) of Starward, as you say a bit pricey for a young nas whisky,Slàinte Jim

Excellent review mate. Your "yeah nah!" was spot on :) . I am glad to see that you have been able to find a Starward bottle, Starward are consistently putting out some great juice, I have reviewed quite a lot of them myself. The Solera is a great whisky, but we pay through the nose for it even here. We probably pay about $90-$100, which would be about your 60 quid. We have some remarkable whisky down here, I am trying to share as many of them as possible. Keep your eyes peeled for Archie Rose, they are rising up the ranks to be one of our biggest distilleries. I really would not be surprised if they will be the next to crack the U.K. market. cheers for a great review mate.

Cheers Andrew. That's very kind mate. Aww it's great to see countries, like your own Australia gettin' in there and mixing it with the big boys. If this Starward is anything to go by...I look forward to what else I can get my hands on. Thanks buddy.

Mate, the quality of whisky we are producing at the moment will challenge any high end whisky around the world. It is just unfortunate that unless people come here, you will most likely never be able to try them. That is why I try to review as many as I can.

G’day mate. Interesting review for sure, but if you keep digging holes like that, you’ll end up right next to the actual distillery with some luck. Been looking to try some StarWard for a while, so thanks for feeding the fomo 🙈😅. Still, no worries, eh. Oh, extra points for the Operation Ivy shirt btw👊.

😄😄😄 yeah I do like putting my neck on the line with accents. I will/would recommend but...only at the right price. If you hold off until the next time I'm sending you samples mate...I'll throw in one of these. And yes...I have been waiting for you to comment on the shirt 😁. I knew if anyone would know Operation Ivy, it'd be Menno 😉. Brilliant band with far, FAR too little material in my opinion. Thanks man.

Interesting, I haven't tried this one but have a single cask & cask strength storepick for La Maison du Whisky that was on offer at Chrismas for registered customers only & it came at an interesting price but I'm afraid that aside from the 40 % abv expressions all comes really expensive (I noticed other interesting on the paper expressions but those ones are around 70 to 80 € already, mine was over 100 before the offer). I'm surprised you compared your with a Bourbon driven malt like the Glenmorangie 10, but I get your point on sweetness...Cheers & cool to see you managed to get in your place that quite "remote produced" whisky ! Cheers !

Another review that resonates with me Jim. I have had a sample of this an I agree with your comments. It's good but unfortunately I would never pay the asking price for this bottle. For me this is a £35 bottle. Plenty better whiskies to spend my money on than this Starward

Nah Yeah, That G'day was pretty good. Starward has really gotten themselves all over the world now and this is one of the good ones. Winemakers of Australia acknowledged that the name 'sherry' was not theirs to use and gave the name back to Spain so we use Apera.Cheers!
