She also stated (in the movie) that lowering the shields would alert her troops to storm the area, so I always took it as her saving her own life in the moment, but then ensuring the encroachers would soon be captured, thus making a brief lowering of the shields negligible in the overall battle. But it just didn't pan-out as she surmised.

I love learning about stuff like this, especially as a fan of Phasma -- even in spite of the, at first, seeming lunacy of her giving up so easily in TFA. And even though I have read some of the tie-in material that's come out of this sort of, renaissance of all things SW, I do sometimes wish we didn't HAVE to seek the tie-in stuff to flesh out what's being delivered on screen, in the movies. But that's why channels like this are great. Thanks!
@TheJmack907 жыл бұрын
sXeblues Fair enough. The thing is I like learning about this stuff too. It's super interesting. But my issue is I don't really need a backstory on why Phasma lowered the shields when the reason was plainly obvious. I think explaining that IN-DEPTH is unnecessary.
@faxanadu137 жыл бұрын
sXeblues yeah I do love the hidden details but maybe it wasn't made clear that there was more to Phasma behind the mask
@sXeblues7 жыл бұрын
Monthly Gamer I don't particularly agree that her motivations were in any way obvious. As I remember being completely blindsided by her giving up so hilariously easily, and was even a mite peeved at how it seemed completely out of nowhere, and was left entirely unexplained. So for me, the depth and realization that these insights bring to her, are very welcome. But, to each their own.
@sXeblues7 жыл бұрын
faxanadu13 I don't think it was made clear, in TFA, anyway. We didn't get nearly enough 'character' out of Phasma in that movie, as I would have liked.
@TheJmack907 жыл бұрын
sXeblues But why were you blindsided? Because you assumed that she was loyal? She wasn't! I wasn't blindsided because nothing about Phasma's character in The Force Awakens screams "LOYAL TO THE END." She didn't have enough screen time to do so.
@RTL2L7 жыл бұрын
So, once again, "bad guys" don't really have loyal followers, anyone are just looking for their own. One of the most intriguing characters turned out to be unprincipled thug. I love Kylo Ren, but he is obviously unstable, Hux has сonfidence problems, so I was hoping Phasma will turn out to be a competent commander. You can't really empathize with the heroes if antagonists are so weak.
@TheNinjaDC7 жыл бұрын
Well when you are in a war cult that literally worships dark emotions like lust for power, greed, and self desires above all, it tends not to breed loyalty. There are exceptions, but they're, well, exceptions. Sith's greatest enemies usually were other Sith for a reason. And that is why the rule of two came about.

@hekatebleble48007 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that whatever Ren and Snoke are will be more or less mirrored in the training of Rey by Luke. At least for the most part of tLJ. We know Luke is not so keen to the whole idea of Jedi now and Daisy has said long ago she's not sure if her character becomes a Jedi in the upcoming episode. So we're probably going to have the dark side-not-really-Sith users on one end and light side-not-really-Jedi on another. And it makes me so excied to see how it'll play out and what are the motives behind Luke's and Snoke's decissions, or if they will even turn out to have a simillar goal, but only different idea of how to reach it. That would be interesting indeed.
@tranqle737 жыл бұрын
The reason why people are so puzzled by Phasma's betrayal is because she was hyped as the ideal First Order hero. One of the visual guides I read (which came out on the same day as TFA) established that Phasma was loyal to the First Order and thought that the Empire failed BECAUSE of a lack of loyalty and dedication. She went out of her way to give troops proper training throughout and would even walk through Starkiller Base on foot just to personally inspect things and inspire discipline. There wasn't even a truly practical purpose for this, as it took time- She did it out of a fanatical pride for the First Order. ....And then, right out of the blue she betrays the First Order in record time and suddenly she's retconned as a back stabber. Which is fine, it's just that having all this other promotional material suggest otherwise is frustrating.
@bryanmcclure22207 жыл бұрын
Most of that is propaganda of the first order phasma herself is more than just a soldier but a important part of the first order propaganda as such she has a Mythos that has been built around her by the first order. But it's all an act, that she does in order to improve her chances of survival.

- Discarding a character because she was only validated by her story in the books - Cites a character from Game of Thrones, a series that took it's entire plot from books. Phasma is a perfectly valid character. Just because she didn't have the best introduction doesn't discard her character. Specially when you're comparing it to a series that has hour-long episodes, and therefore, much more time to invest in a character's backstory, unlike a single movie.

@tylermacgregor13207 жыл бұрын
The Scoundrel's Cantina You're not wrong, but this isn't really something TFA 'needs.' All the relevant information you need to follow the main characters' archs is still there in the film. Stuff like the backstories of minor characters is okay to flesh out in outside material. I think the prequels and Rogue One to an extent are much more guilty of leaving essential information to outside material.
@joelgholami26727 жыл бұрын
And what's worse, this makes the First Order exponentially more incompetent! Why would they trust someone like her with the defensive codes? Judging from this explanation, I believe there will also not be a satisfactory explanation of Rey's extreme powers.
@cujoedaman7 жыл бұрын
Tyler, if the prequels are guilty of anything, it's that they opened up more plot holes than they actually covered up. Rogue One at least stuck to one plot hole and did it well enough that you don't have to sit there wondering if it was still plausible or not. I never really cared for why Phasma gave up so easily, considering the Empire/First Order has always been filled with backstabbers and those who are out to only save their own skin rather than be for the greater "good" of the faction. Phasma is just a weak character like Boba Fett, but for some reason gets all the glory.
@cujoedaman7 жыл бұрын
Oh, you know, things like Anakin building C3P0, not remembering him or R2D2 when he was Vader, R2 having rockets in his legs, Leia remember her mother even though she never met her (Padame' died when she was born). Why did Obi-Wan say Anakin wanted Luke to have his lightsaber? Why did Obi-Wan say Yoda trained him? Qui-Gon trained him. Why did Obi-Wan call Vader "Darth" as a name instead of a title? He knew the Sith used "Darth" as a title. Granted, some can be chalked up to the fact that Lucas didn't know much of this when Star Wars came out, but he effectively created so many plot holes that you can't cover them up. I really am nitpicking here and not trying to argue, but it bugs me how people say The Force Awakens is trash, but forget just how badly the rest of the series really is when you look very close at the details. That being said, I'm still a fan and I will continue as long as I can.
@tylermacgregor13207 жыл бұрын
The Scoundrel's Cantina One that bugged me was the fact that in the original trilogy, the jedi and the force were treated as myth, with people like Han and even high ranking imperial officers dismissing them as "fairy tales and sorcery". Yet according to the prequels, they had a hugely public role in the clone wars and the government not 20 years prior. Did the galaxy really just forget about that whole "guardians of peace and justice for over a thousand generations" thing in less than two decades?

I think the real reason why Phasma's only contribution to the plot is betraying her allies by lowering the shields of Starkiller Base is that the script of The Force Awakens was developed before her character was, so in an attempt to make her meaningful for the plot, they added the scene where she lowered the shields. Nevertheless, I will forgive the creators of The Force Awakens if they make good use of her egoistic behavior in Episodes VIII and IX, I would love to see her defect to the Resistance when they start to gain the upper hand, for example. :)

Why Phasma was doomed to be disappointing in TFA from the start: Designer creates a shinny stormtrooper suit for Kylo Ren but the design is rejected for that character. The powers to be of course see that design as interesting (I like it) and importantly as very marketable and decide to use it for another character. They decide to give the role to a woman (we never had a female stormtrooper in the original trilogy) and they push the character as this important and badass high ranked soldier of the First order that will gain everyones's attention. And then the movie happened and we were like " But from a story point of view this was a very underwhelming and underused character" and Disney was like " But you've already bought all the toys havent you?"
@jrscientist87837 жыл бұрын
I like your point and combining it with my own we see that the advertising policy cost a lot to the character. Maybe we can make an analogy between phasma and Mace Windu. Both were played by recognizable actors and both had minor roles in the movies they first appeared. But there is no one that has an issue with Mace Windu's arc in TPM. In the frame of the story his involvement feels natural. Now lets imagine that back then it was heavilly advertised that Samuel Jackson would play a truly badass,respectable,yoda level important jedi. Who wouldn't thought that Mace Windu wasn't a disappointment in the movie then? Of course the irony is that this happened to the movie as a whole.

Stormtrooper superiors are known to be *very* loyal, to the point where they would, without a doubt, rather die than risking the organization that they serve. This was established over and over by the prequels, Clone Wars, and the comics. So, unless you don't know/care at all about inconsistencies, this *was* necessary.

Henrik Christoffersen lol no you're fine man, I understand you enough. But anyway I'm not saying you're wrong, but what caused her to lower the shields in the first place was that she had a gun to her face. So I see that as her surrendering. Even if she lowered them because she thought the resistance wouldn't succeed anyway, I would still see that as an excuse for her to survive.

1:24 Why did you show this particular image of the Nightsisters? Are they related in any way to Phasma's homeworld? Interesting backstory. She's self-serving, but she's capable. Like a mercenary. I really wished that they made her this way in TFA or show it some more in TLJ just so that we are aware of what her character truly is like. The chrome armor was probably meant to further make her stand out as that symbol of power. I could probably see her forsaking it when she plans to leave the First Order.

It is amazing the mental gymnastics people play to justify something that makes no sense. All we had to do was wait 2 years for them to finish a commissioned book to explain a character writers were too lazy to make interesting in a movie. Then speculate wildly about thoughts that character may have had a over 3 years ago in a script written before this retconing novel. The existence of this book just proves how poorly written this character was. Before anyone says, but what about Boba Fett. I agree it was bad writing when they did it with Boba Fett and its bad now.
@Ampwich7 жыл бұрын
Well with Boba Fett, he never really did anything or was too important to know his backstory or the WHY. He was simply a bounty hunter who made a bargain with the Empire to capture Han for Jabba, done and done. Phasma betraying her team and compromising the safety of an ENTIRE secretive operation that is their key to reclaiming the galaxy......I agree, that is just dumb and lazy.
@xen13136 жыл бұрын
Here's an interesting thought after Last Jedi, she'll be back in the next movie, specifically hunting Fin for his burning of her face. Her face plate was cracked as she fell through the flames. We never saw what was under those flames in the final cut. The flames scar her exposed, unprotected face, she survives and is now hunting the man she thinks marked her. Complete conjecture on my part, but it would interesting if they set the character up as a "Fett" type Bounty Hunter.

Phasma was so shitty. See, the movies are the main focus in Star Wars, and they introduce and hype this character in the last main movie, and it was completely bullshit. It wasn't unlike the rest of the movie being bullshit, but still. They showed her and it was almost like they were trying to make another Boba Fett type character, hyping them up and never showing them in combat. She could've retaliated as her being a warrior she would've fought back almost instinctively and then Chewy or something KO's her or something, and that would've been awesome. It was just kinda lazy and it was misleading. Hell they seemed to have made the book to damn near answer why she did that without any hesitation.

Possibly the best female narration I have ever heard. Marc Thompson is the best narrator overall but January Lavoy is really good too.

@bryanmcclure22207 жыл бұрын
Hux did not put her in command because she was a good fighter he had plenty of good Fighters in the book it makes it quite clear they put her in command cuz he might admired her leadership ability and the way she trained her soldiers from her tribe that accompanied them, also because she was was able to remain unattached from them even though she had been with them for many years and train them all herself she ultimately put the mission above them not unlike General hux which is why he put her in command. Specifically he put her in command of training Stormtroopers this is all explained in the book

If she doesn't care all that much for the First order, then why she wears armor made from the personal yacht of Palpatine? I assumed she does it because she admires him and is fanatically loyal to the FO as a successor of Palpatine's empire, but know this explanation doesn't make sense.

Wrong because it's part of their propaganda that is the first orders propaganda plasma is more than just a competent leader she's supposed to be a symbol of the first order that's why she has a name and every other Stormtrooper has a number this also explained in the book. She didn't choose her armor was giving her by the first order as part of the myth they are trying to build around her
@EmperorRyu16 жыл бұрын
Because the armor is made from the ship that crashed on her homeworld and brought the First Order to her. So see's the ship's material (Ultrachrome) and the Stormtrooper outfit (combined with the chrome) as a symbol of her freedom from Parnassos.

Because it benefits her to do so. She could even have considered the possibility of promotion in the event that Hux and Kylo didn't survive Starkiller Base's destruction. If they got killed, Phasma would be the logical choice to assume command.

Some of the comments man...you guys have to be spoon fed this badly? You can't persevere enough to see that Phasma clearly isn't loyal to her dying breath. You HAVE to be told why? @KasperHietala7 жыл бұрын
Well you say in your comment that people don't realise the obvious. But then you say there isn't anything that points toward that assumption. There's a problem with these statements.
@TheJmack907 жыл бұрын
Top Kek let me make myself clear so I don't sound like I'm contradicting myself. Phasma is not a fully realized/fleshed out character in The Force Awakens. We know close to nothing about her. The only thing I do know about her is that she's demanding, she's attentive, and that she...isn't willing to die for the people she works with...and she isn't too keen to the idea of trash compactors...lol THATS ALL I KNOW!!! There's no problem with my statements at all. People EXPECT Phasma to be badass because she looks BADASS! People expect Phasma to be loyal to the death to The First Order because that's expected of anybody working for that regime. But judging by her actions by lowering the shields and saving her own life, she's not entirely willing to lay down her life for the First Order. It's shown on screen clear as day. The issue isn't with the film, it's with people having preconceived notions of a character (without knowing the character) only to be shown something entirely different that didn't match up with what they thought. Hopefully that makes sense.

Given that any film has limit to what it can reasonably convey, especially a family film. Using a book to flesh out certain characters seems fine by me. That Phasma is portrayed and as a ruthless self preservationist is fine by me. That makes her agreeably dislikeable and and predictable in her theamatic unpredictability. In other words, a jolly good villain who can turn up in all sorts of uniforms. All of which I'm certain she'd look positively ravishing in. Though not the type of lass I'd knowingly swipe right on, on Tinder.

In the MOMENT of the story, you have to get it right. The character looks weak by lowering the shields. The backstory stuff doesn't fix anything, all it does it shift the questions around: If she was "not to be trusted" then WHY THE F DO YOU GIVE HER THE ABILITY TO LOWER THE SHEILDS in the first place?! It makes no sense. The character is weak and broken.
@MassiveKreutz7 жыл бұрын
No. It's just retconning a really lame plothole. It's similar to why Kylo Ren lost his duel with Rey (though this made at least some sense, if you thought about it REEEEAL hard). If you need additional media just to get something in the movie... you have failed as a director. TFA wasn't a good movie. It was fine, sure, but the story was incredibly weak. Let's just hope TLJ will make up for it. Rogue One was really good, so I haven't given up hope. Don't care for the Han Solo solo flick at all, never got why anybody liked that character. Yeah yeah, Han's dead, fine. They put him in the movie just to please older fans anyway.
