This is one of the gravel rides I am looking at ordering to have in Tennessee where I am managing my late parents estate (I live in western Massachusetts....and would rather not transport my bike back and forth up and down I-81). This bike seems to “cross every ‘t’ and dot every ‘i’ “ for me...at a good price range. In your video, you come across as a pretty relaxed, easy-going gent....I know myself well and I’m not sure I’d come across as civil and patient as you were / are with State’s lack of immediate response and some quality control issues you noted. So I appreciate your insight as to your experience with State, and your observations with bicycle’s assembly short comings (stripped bolts, no cable ferrule, etc). State would do well to take advantage of your comments and work to control that in the future (I’ve looked at quite a few reviews recently, and the bent derailleur hanger is something another reviewer noted as well...so State....again....take heed!). Good review, amigo...and BTW, great looking canine pal!

Thanks so much for your comment and feedback, I really appreciate it! I think over time, the frustrations dealing with state will fade away because of how much fun this bike is, and the specs for the price point. If you aren’t in a huge rush to get the bike and are a pretty familiar with bike assembly/adjustment, I’d say go for it! Also if you have any other specific questions, feel free to message me on Instagram @bikeonwayne. Cheers!

I have the Bicycle Nomad version, first ride had to replace cassette and chain. SBC said sorry we will only repay you for parts, no tax no labor. Then i tried setting it up tubeless no luck. Retyped wheel and used valve cores from an existing tubeless and still NG. Called SBC they said take it to a bike shop and call us back. Terrible customer service, last purchase from SBC for me. Swapped the tires to Gravel Kings on the 700c version and i love the bike. My only complaint is the clutch doesn’t work well and in the highest gear the chain has come off twice in 1 week. I have another gravel bike 1x with over 1k miles and never dropped the chain.

I'm am currently going through this non comm with state myself. Their general shipping section clearly states that they usually ship within a day or two. I didn't pre-order and my billing says, sometime in early February, I ordered Jan 4, Yikes, I've rifled off an email, but no reply. But they took my money, really fast. Lol. Anyway, state should learn to communicate with paying customers better, don't you think. Good review, I can't wait to receive mine. Thanks man.

Thanks, George! Sorry to hear your dealing with that too.. so frustrating. Better communication would definitely help keep customers happy. Hopefully it does ship in early Feb!

I have beaten mine senseless on gravel, dirt, mtb and blacktop for well over 2500 miles. I love it. The Sensa based groupset is awesome as well. Brakes are strong, but I upgraded to sintered pads front and rear. I adore it. Unpaid endorsement. Unless State sends me some stuff.
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
Awesome man. I have around 1100 miles in mine now, on all types of terrain and absolutely love it too. I agree about the groupset. Maybe I’ll try new pads before upgrading the brakes. I was thinking compressionless housing might help too

I was looking at this as a possible winter commuting bike, but if it takes that long to get here winter may be over by then. I like the 700c and 650b swap ability.
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
That’s a realistic concern. I just checked the SBC website and it says expected shipping early February. If that actually happens you’d probably have it by mid feb, but you never know.. might be a spring commuter instead. Also, I just picked up a 700c wheelset so after I get some time in on that setup, I’ll make a video about how it rides with 650b vs 700c.

@@towtowstrailtalk6853 Yeah it really is. I have to say I prefer the 650b wheels with bigger tires for the plush ride. The Vittoria barzos that came stock are great for loose/muddy stuff, but I’m looking forward to getting some Rene Herse 650b x 48 for it once I wear these out :)

@@bikeonwayne6937 Thank you for the review! This was so helpful! Any update on 650b vs 700c? Trying to decide between the two for riding mostly on paved roads and occasionally some off-road trails.
@bikeonwayne69372 жыл бұрын
@@NirateTV I think the bike is a lot more fun 650b even on pavement and really encourages you to hop on any little side trails, gravel paths, etc. I think it comes with Vitoria terreno dry tires now which are less knobby and roll smooth on pavement and still good on gravel, just not mud. I have them on another bike and like them. With 700c wheels it feels a little more like a touring bike and lacks the cushion you get from bigger tires.

Hey Wayne, about your problem on 12:00 of the video. This is wrong routing of the cable, it should have been routed to the outer side of the hoods and the under the handlebars. You can reroute it when you change bar tape or replace cables. Hope this helps!

Awesome, thanks. Probably time for some new bar tape this winter so I’ll give that a try!

Good review! I like the grey myself! Anyway, looks like yours is a 54(med). How tall are you and what's your inseam? I am 5'8" with a 30" inseam and usually ride a 54. State's sizing chart is saying for my measurements to get the small. After your riding experience what do you think? Thanks!
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m 5’10 with a 32” inseam. I usually ride a 55 or 56, but this 54 fits me perfectly. According to the geo chart, the effective top tube length on the medium is 55, and the small is 53.5. Sounds like you’re close to being right on the line between sizes, but a small may be closer to what you usually ride. With the stock stem (100mm I think) there’s a chance you’d feel a bit stretched out on the medium. There’s also a chance you’d want a longer stem on the small.. With an appropriate stem and proper saddle adjustment (fore/aft, tilt, and height) you could probably find a good fit on either. The biggest difference would be standover height. You’d have plenty on the small, but medium might be tight. On paved rides it’s not such a big deal but on rougher terrain it’s nice not to worry about that when you need to put a foot down. Also, from other reviews I’ve read, the small only has one set of bottle bosses in the main triangle while the medium has 2, and more room for a frame bag (although it weighs slightly more.. not a big deal in my opinion though). Hope this helps!!

I wanted the tan, ended up with grey just didnt want to wait. Got mine back in I think august. I had a couple issues to. one did not get barzos ended up with the GK's fine but I kinda wanted the chunkier tire( I should mention I ordered after the barzo was the new standard). I ordered mine with a 36t chain ring it never showed. got a refund. I ordered to 700C 650B combo which is a good deal I went to pull the rear wheel and the axle was trashed way over torqued stripped threads. they replaced that and the hanger was a ton of back and forth but they made that right. I agree the brakes suck. I didnt like the bars and switched to cow chippers.
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response! So your hanger was bent too and they replaced that and the axle? I still need to ask them about my hanger.. What do you think riding 700c vs 650b?
@Summitperry3 жыл бұрын
@@bikeonwayne6937 No hanger is part of the thru axle and it was stripped from over torque. Just email them they will want a bunch of pics and after that it was sent out. I kinda feel like the bike handles better on the 700C to be honest. I think If i would have got the larger barzo's I would have preferred that ride. the GK's are not that much bigger of a tire it just doesn't feel like a totally different bike just closer to the ground and slightly better in chunky stuff. I still have the 650B's on it but I will switch them out before spring and probably stick to 700C on the bike.

Great review and really nice bike. I’m about 6’ tall with a 32” inseam. From their chart it looks like a Medium would be best for me. How tall are you and what size is yours? It’s a little scary buying a bike sight unseen. Thanks!
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
Thanks, John, and I agree with that! I’m 5’10 with 32” inseam. In the previous comment from Eric, I talked about the sizing a bit so that would be worth reading. I also ride a medium and find the fit basically perfect right out of the box. I think a medium would most likely be the best fit for you as well, maybe with the saddle adjusted towards the back. There is plenty of length on the seatpost to get it high enough, and crank arms are 175mm. The overall feel is more upright than a traditional road bike but still stretched out enough to have some weight towards the front, and not be sitting upright like an mtb or cruiser. You could always swap to a longer stem if you needed more reach. But I think you would be able to achieve a good fit with proper adjustment of the stock components.

Been getting into riding bikes in the last year or two. Been looking for a fun all around bike like this one. You mentioned being able to swap out wheel sizes. Which size do you like more? I'd probably end up with both but what do you think I should start with?
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
After more time on the bike I like it wayyyy better with 650b wheels and big tires. Just feels more playful and fun and is more capable on singletrack than you’d imagine. Only benefit I see of 700c is a little less rolling resistance on pavement but you lose the “suspension” from higher volume low pressure tires and the bike feels slightly boring that way to me, at least compared to 650b.
@gavin7390 Жыл бұрын
Hey man. Good review. Do you still have this bike? I'm planning on getting it but I'm a bit concerned with the quality of some of the parts. Many reviews have mentioned a bent derailleur hangar and other issues. A lot of people have mentioned that chain dropping happens quite a bit too
@bikeonwayne6937 Жыл бұрын
I do still have it, still liking it after 2 seasons of riding. It does seem like bent derailleur hangers are an issue but I good LBS should be able to straighten it out if its a little off. It that and the derailleur are properly adjusted there shouldn’t be much of an issue with dropped chain. The clutch works well keeping tension on bumpy terrain. I’ve only had dropped chains when hanger was bent or derailleur limits weren’t set properly so it shifted beyond the biggest or smallest cog.

I’m looking for a bike to ride to school and use to train. Would this be a good bike for that. Great video.
@bikeonwayne69373 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’d say this is a good bike for both of those things. Plenty of rack (and fender) mounts if you wanted to carry stuff that way and really solid frame to stand up to daily commuting use. Makes a fine training bike too, depending what you’re training for/what you want to do. Comfortable riding position for long rides. It’s fairly heavy so I see that as a plus for training. Not a super fast bike, so will make you feel really strong if you get on a lightweight race bike 💪. Good luck choosing a bike!

hi can i put my 27.5 x 2.6 inch. wide tires in the FORK only? thanks
@bikeonwayne69372 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. there’s a good bit of clearance in the fork with a 27.5 x 2.2 tire. I haven’t gone any larger.. I can try to measure the space on either side of the tire and let you know. My gut says you may be able to squeeze it in but it would be super tight, leaving no room for mud, etc, or the tire itself might just rub the fork. I’ll measure tomorrow and let you know
@jamesl.76572 жыл бұрын
@@bikeonwayne6937 wow really you will measure it, thank you so much
@bikeonwayne69372 жыл бұрын
@@jamesl.7657 so with the 27.5 x 2.2 tire there is still about a 1/2 inch of clearance on either side and above the tire (below fork crown). So the 2.6 might fit, but it would definitely be sacrificing clearance for mud, tire deformation, etc. Let me know if you try it!

How supple this bike with 2.1 tiers and how it handle bumps
@bikeonwayne69372 жыл бұрын
I’m running the 2.1 tires usually around 27-28 psi and for it really absorbs rough terrain well. Not going to feel like a bike with suspension of course but feels great for a rigid bike. It feels much better this way than with 700c x 35ish tires in my opinion. The frame is steel but the tubing is pretty thick so the big tires really make the difference in ride quality.
