@@l00tur That's what I thought when I saw they changed the tires on the second release. Something to keep in mind though is that Panaracer may not be in a position to supply enough tires to meet State's timeframe. Panaracer makes great tires but their business practices leave something to be desired. Their marketing seems nearly entirely word of mouth and you should probably just order them online instead of spending tons of time to find a local dealer.

The gravel daddy poop walls are an amazing tire. I have them on my 2017 Specialized Crux and it’s damn difficult to go to a different tire unless you’re looking to dig trenches into local trails (which you shouldn’t be doing because that’s bad news bears). Nice overview of the bike, I was looking to suggest this to a friend and this solidifies that it’s a good first bike.

Thank you, what a great detailed review of the relevant points. I like the idea of getting this bike for it's versatility. 1) Being able to swap out wheel sets: I'm mostly a paved road rider up and down hilly streets, but sometimes would like to take it on gravel fire-roads or single tracks. 2) Get 11-46 cassette in a back for lower gearing and whatever chain ring in the front makes sense for me). 3) Change out brakes for a hydromechanical setup (Winn R1s or the TRP HYRDs). 4) put on a rear rack for a child seat for my 2-year-old. But, I'm noticing that the largest frame size ("Large") is 55 cm size. I'm thinking that will be a problem since I'm 6'3", inseam=34.6" and arm-length= 29". So, are there some other bikes with a good versatile base that have a larger frames that can accommodate my height (60 cm or 61 cm)? Thank you in advance. Lee

Bigger brands aren't willing to deal with unproven Chinese groupsets and buying from Shimano eats up a lot of the bigger brand's budgets. The bikes I saw in this price range while shopping usually had 2x8 Claris. State also uses the same handlebar for every size I think, which is a bit cramped for huge guys like me and probably too wide for the XS bikes. I really like how it shifts, so far, but time will tell how well it holds up. It's cheap to replace with a new Sensah set and it's also compatible with SRAM levers and derailleurs so I'm not terribly worried about it.
@BruceChastain

I can dig it. Personally I'd like is 36t in front. Also maybe they could give us hydraulic disks with a 9 or 10 speed for same price? or is that too much of a jump?

Great review! It will be interesting to see how the groupset holds up over time. There's a little bit of play on my derailleur that has caused some ghost shifting. Overall it's really nice though. I was also hoping that the left brake had the guts in it to go 2x. It appears to be empty and will only act as a brake. Also worth noting, the 43cm XS size only has one set of bottle mounts. I'm guessing they couldn't fit one on the seat tube without giving up some seat post length.

I can't decide. Continue the purchase for my Framed Basswood that is now on backorder until November OR go with this State All-Road with the carbon fork addition on it. Both come out to the same price. Basswood has TRP Spyre brakes, the All-Road needs better brakes. Basswood has Apex 1 derailleur, the All-Road has it's own branded one. I can't decide what to do. Then there's the case of the Redwood being set up with 650x47 Gravelking SS + tires and forcing that to be more road oriented since I'm about 70/30 Road/short cut through paths and the such. I'm torn between all three. Not sure if I should just hold out and wait for the Basswood or get one of the other two asap.

Welp, I bought the X this summer and rode it for a month or so before selling it. It’s a great starter bike, but if you’re into biking already you will want something else. The QuickRelease wheels suck to change. The wheels aren’t and can’t be setup tubeless. The tires are the heaviest tires I’ve ever felt. And those brakes, they need to be changed. I ended up selling the X and bought a used 2022 Kona Jake the Snake and am so happy I did so. It rides worlds better. I’d say skip the poseidon and go either Framed, State, or AllCity

I think you're going to have a hard time finding something price competitive to this. Everything is going to have a compromise somewhere. Other options in similar prices are compromising more permanent fixtures (like the frame/fork mounting options). I'd rather compromise on consumables that will be replaced anyways (that drive train/brakes) Salsa Journeyman? $1200 for Sora 9spd groupset or sub 1k for Claris 8spd. Has a carbon fork. Sensah at the price is going to have better range but if you don't want to risk it... Nicasio+ (if you can find one) is sub $1k with MicroShift Advent 9. MicroShift just released a new update on the Advent 9 and hopefully next years Nicasio+ will be running the new make. Poseidon was pre-ordering for 2021 but I think its closed now. Microshift Advent X and nice price at $700 but most suspect wheels. None of these are steel and I think you'd have a hard time finding a good steel frame new at this price. Maybe check facebook marketplace. If you're a non-normal size (exp XS/SM/XL), I'm seeing Salsa Fargo's going for under $1500

@@jedl1247 You might contact State to get a more detailed component spec. From what I can tell online it looks like its the Sensah Empire, so its a BSA bottom bracket. If that's the case, it would make upgrading the drive train simpler. There's lots of 1x crank options for BSA bottom brackets. And 11spd (or wide range 10spd) cassettes/cranks are dropping in price since the big manufacturers have moved on to their new 12speed standards (which aren't cross compatible with non-12spd components). And that its 11 speed standard means that you're not locked into a frankenbike hodgepodge of mixed components that are going to require complete overhaul if you wish to upgrade 1 component. That's the problem with a lot of these lower price point entry bikes, 8spd road standard requires complete overhaul if you want to go up to a 10+

Interesting. Yes; a single piston mechanical brake is just not appropriate, but can be upgraded. I would be a little cautious of the Sensah drivetrain. I have seen a very comprehensive review which indicated that the shifting was good; but the shifter was fatally delicate. A particular part that takes the full force of the shift was injection-molded plastic, as opposed to the metal found in main line competitors. It failed catastrophically after only moderate use. That would ruin a ride. Nonetheless, it is exciting that interesting bikes are getting affordable. Your buddy, Spindatt, reviewed a new Poseidon this morning in the same general category. It looks great and includes MicroShift AdventX. No price point yet.

The shift to 1x makes no sense for bikes that go up long climbs. Front derailleurs and an extra alloy chainring weigh nothing. I would put a 2x on it. The difference between 10 and 11 speed is nothing to worry about as it is the lowest gear size that matters. If the lowest two gears work for the hilliest terrain, that is all you need.

My take on the bike: PROs: - Excellent price - A fairly nice frame overall. Beautifully-sloping top tube and nice overall appealing geometry. - The wheels appear to be quite good - Threaded bottom bracket - Has lots of mounts, including a fork crown one for a headlight, full-size front & rear mudguards & racks. I believe, every bike should have them. CONs: - The bottom end of seat stays is hideous! I can't stand that vulgar, ugly curvature! - The handlebar has a cylindrical profile. I much prefer ergonomic / aero profile handlebars, but with wide enough cylindrical cross-section in the centre for mounting a handlebar bracket, a computer, a smartphone mounts, etc. Will need to be swapped upon the acquisition. That's added expenditure of ca. €20-30 (with the sale of the stock handlebar accounted for) - Mechanical disc brakes. Swapping them for hydraulics will necessitate replacing shifters, too. That's another ca. €300 post-purchase. - External cable routing: I can live with it (My Norco Search XR Steel has these, too), but don't appreciate it very much, as it's a little ugly. - A rather heavy frame - Lacks a top tube mount. - A heavy, rather ugly (although very practical, owing to all the necessary mounts) steel fork. I much prefer carbon fork, but carbon forks are quite expensive at €300 or more. - Gearing is not ideal: 10-50 for a 1x would be about ideal. - The tyres will need replacing with something slick, fast-rolling and light (i.e., Schwalbe G-One Speed, the Panaracer GravelKing SLK or similar). That's €50-90,- extra.

americantroy77 hey they do make a handful of options for gravel around this price, my video I’ll post tomorrow will explain how I’m planning to help people choose the best bike for them. I’m working on consulting for this exact reason to help the community. 😊

I'm having a terrible time with these people, I guess I ordered a pre order bike like this one, on the fourth of January, 2021. And on the twenty fourth of January was sent good news by this company. Trouble is I can't find any indication that it was shipped. Fedex says someone made a label and that's where they are with that. There's nothing to track. Remember, they sent me the so called good news. All I hear is crickets. I've tried several times to call their number but got nothing but automated robot. I may have to go after these people, as they took my money quick. Something's amiss

I’d reach out via Facebook or Instagram, I know they are moving warehouses so that’s maybe why the calls haven’t work.
