It's an easy assembly, but the SBC warranty demands that you pay your LBS to put it together. Also, Check the tightness of the headset and chain. My chain was far too tight. It's an easy adjust, just don't forget to loosen the brake arm in addition to the axle nuts to move the back wheel in the track ends. It's a fun bike and you can pimp it up a bit if you prefer nicer parts.

I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyways just incase. I'll be ordering one of these next week and the man side of me cannot bare the thought of having a bike shop assemble it for me. I understand why State has that policy if you want to get the warranty. Is there any possibility they'd still give a warranty if I built it and paid my local bike shop to go over my work with a fine tooth comb and thumb up my work? As much as I hate the thought of not building it myself, I also don't want to lose the warranty either so I'm really stuck here.

Does the bike have a spot to add rim brakes?

There is a drilling in the fork which might accommodate a big ol' caliper brake, but I don't know if the rims are designed for brake pads.
