State Bike Co. sent over a 4130 Core-Line for me to review. It unfortunately had a lot of issues from bent drop bars, 115mm rear spacing, and a small dent in the downtube. I contacted State, and here’s their responses for all of the issues I had along with my first ride impressions of the 4130 Core-Line.

I’ve had really great experience with state as a normal customer. I also had issues with mushy crank/bb, loose cog, dented frame, etc, and when I reached out they were super responsive, and offered warranty on the frame. I ended up not warrantying the frame, because I just wanted to ride. In addition, they have an awesome stolen bike policy. If your bike is stolen and you report it to the police, they’ll discount a bike by $100 for you. Originally, I thought that this only applied if you had a bike from State that was stolen, but upon clarification they will do this for any bike brand. In all, to me, it seems that State is a company that may be suffering from poor QC, but is run by upstanding riders who want everyone to have a bike.

Been riding a State Jamaica 2.0 for 3 years. Sun burned the black wheels and as they turned brown state send me a new set of wheels to replace, same thing next year and ended up getting miche x-press wheels later on. Some quality issues surely but totally satisfied as its my first fixie and been riding on it since 2015. I´ve been riding it in the rain and in the snow so i would say it has lasted rather well regardless of those conditions.

Isn't that a pretty decent ding on inside of the drive side seatstay? If you go to 1:33 it's right in line with the top of Zach's shoulder. That looks a lot more substantial than the downtube ding he points out. Maybe that's related to the rear spacing issue.

I could be wrong, but i remember in the old days (30 years ago), having too little room in the back to place the wheel was commonplace. We even had a specific tool that used screw-thread to open up that space.

I actually bought same model.I ran into the some of the same problems as you also. LUBRICATION...Yeah they didn't do it. CRANKS/BB held up but only for about a few months an then started getting really cricky, but they did there job. An also I've talked to customer service bout few minor questions an they are really responsive,so I give them that👏 A1 customer service.Overall what I got is what I payed for. I've put the bike through all season an after a year am now getting around to upgrading parts as they breakdown from wear an tear. For fixe/SS beginners it's the go too,a new company that you can fall in love with. For veteran's it's a lower quality for the masses.

That was a used bike they resprayed you can’t get those dings without paint damage and you can’t bend the rear without hitting those steel core hubs. It would have bent they rear frame. He got a return and I’ve ordered parts there black seat post and stem was cheap China imports or someone who didn’t care about there products. Sand a bit. A bit of spray paint primer and then your final color. Save your self the money ! And they rear cog was threaded wrong so they chain has some tension which makes it less of a smooth ride. It’s a Good frame to build off check Craigslist !

About the rear spacing: this was actually common with the cheap Eastern european steel frames thirty years ago. We just pulled them apart and they would stay that way, easy enough to mount anything on them afterwards. 😂😂👍😄👍👍

I live in Denmark and a year ago I got a puch branded Fixie (that what the sticker says) on offer at the Danish equivalent of a big box store, it was around 120 dollars brand new. Other than having much lower quality pedals I struggle to see what the state bike has over it for three times the price- becuase the spacing was fine and the saddle a bit better I'm actually happy to say it's a better bike. I've commuted to uni on it for a year and done some longer rides- a few 80km trips to the coast and back and it's held up well. I'm away for a Semester and I've decided that since it was so cheap and it's been so reliable I'm going to upgrade it when I'm back, I've got some cheap campagnolo veloce brakes plus a new cheap but better crankset and some bullhorn bars. Gonna get some all metal brake levers and a new chain. I've got some marginally nicer wheels to go on it as well. All of this cost less than another 120 dollars so I'm still at half the price of that bike. My point is that it's fine to have a cheap bike but it needs to be cheap, I have no idea what you are paying for with that state bicycle- it's even got the same crummy but functional brakes

since its a steel frame you should be able to widen the spacing between the dropouts and realign them. You shouldn't have to, but it'll make your life easier if you're planning on keeping the frame. EDIT- didn't watch the full video, new frame is even better

And why would you put grease on the cog and lockring? Typically torque specs are for dry fitment, if you add lubricant, you're changing the friction and can overtorque/overtighten it

Recently ordered a coreline bike and it came badly damaged where I couldn't even put the wheel on, several dents and paint chips. Package looks like it was also dropped. Not looking good so far for State Bicycle....

I know it isnt right nor acceptable but If its a steel frame you can cold set frame. Check out sheldon brown. He explains it well. Simply use a string and ruler to check alignment. Ive done it many times. One thing I would advise is if frame has a chainstay bridge wrap a toe strap around that area to avoid stressing or damaging that weld or braze.

love your reviews Zack, very informative. I've had many bad experiences with state bicycle co, their customer service is the worst I've ever experienced, they are confrontational and standoffish, they always blame the customer, never except fault and never offer anyway to rectify the issues. I submit reviews on their website but they won't post them and have heard they pay people to give them positive reviews. I for one will buy anything from them again. Thanks for your review.

State Bicycle Co. is an exceptional company to deal with. No you are not special, their customer service has always been excellent throughout the years. When dealing with a mass produced bicycle their are certainly going to be issues along the way. While it sucks to be the customer that has to deal with it, it is far more often that you are the customer that receives a solid bike ready to go. A company can only hold their factory to so much when it passes through so many departments in a large order. Let alone the educational level of where those factories come from. However, if the company is willing to make it right and ensure the customer is satisfied then they are doing their job. State Bicycle Co. certainly is one of those companies and absolutely worth supporting and purchasing from.

To be honest, and having worked for a fair amount of years as a bike mechanic for a bicycle-webshop: always have your bike checked at a bikeshop. Bikes that are being mass-produced before shipping do not have the same quality as those having been thuroughly looked after without a timing target. Also, in my opinion, bike mechanics in bike shops are way more passionate about how a bike should ride since they ride and check every single bike they work on. So when you are ordering a bike, make sure to save a little extra for the bike shop. Or learn everything about bikes and make a small workshop at home, it is real fun I find :)
@jewellmaster4746

I could not agree more. I always arrange so I can be with the mechanic when they're working on my bikes so I can learn how to do stuff myself. I find it fun to fix and build bikes on my own, but I still have only the mechanic do certain parts of the build or repair for safety.

I follow a few of the racers on the State team on Instagram. They are really cool, talented and kind. I also have two of their frames, a 4130 and a black and white Undefeated II. I was very excited to see Zach review State. Oh man was I bummed to see how it turned out! It was embarrassing how bad the packing was and the lack of clean / new parts... Especially for a review bike! I felt personally offended 😉 Now that the dust has settled and I no longer feel like I want to sell my bikes I realize that I've had some of the best times of my life riding my State bikes! Sure, they aren't perfect, but no company is. Hopefully the review for the Black Label goes better 😬

I have a 2018 Black Label V2 and love it! I goofed and ordered the wrong complete bike frame size at first, a 55 witch is too small for me. I special ordered it through another bike shop instead of directly from State otherwise I would have been able to just exchange it. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I decided to order the correct frame size for me 57 and just build my own bike with better components. I am partial to Sugino 75 cranks to begin with, and don't like the black label state cranks at all. Too sluggish for me. Also, since the fork has a carbon steer tube, and and just has the really short FSA expander plug, that makes me extremely nervous about possible failure and the thing just collapsing on me. Very dangerous to me, so I special ordered a very long Colagno expander plug to cover more area inside the steer tube. That's just me, I am always very cautious about carbon parts. That being said, I love how the carbon fork smoothes out the aluminum frame. It's a really comfortable ride for being an aluminum frame. I also have a Specialized Langster, and by comparison the carbon fork and aluminum steer tube makes for a really jarring ride. I feel every bump in the road on the Langster, and the State V2 really smoothes out the ride with the complete carbon fork. I decided to turn the 55 that's a bit too small into a townie bike with FSA Metropolis bars. The 57 custom build has DEDA Pista track bars, and is built for pure speed and Velodrome ready. It's a joy to ride on days when I want to let loose and sprint hard!

Living in Tempe down the road from the State Rideshop as well as the State headquarters and warehouse in the opposite direction, I can definitely say you are receiving special treatment throughout this process. Being a typical customer myself and either location being the nearest bicycle retailer and services location I have had many in person and over the phone interactions with their team. When it comes to purchasing bicycles and parts, contacting or even just showing up at the warehouse is always a better idea, however I must always be adamant that I want to choose the parts I am looking for myself straight from the warehouse inventory. I am always advised that this is unusual and their team is doing this as a courtesy for me, otherwise I should go to the State Ride Shop for any purchasing of parts or complete bicycles. The reason I avoid the Rideshop is that during weekdays the only attendant there is the manager who has been there since about October of last year ~ (my opinion at this point is he honestly hates his job or something) ~ who acts as a middleman between me and the warehouse if the item I am looking for is only in stock at the warehouse. On the weekends the bike shop has more staff but it's because they are located across the street from ASU and on those days they are inundated with customers mostly just needing replacement innertubes, and there is always a long wait. All in all, my experience with State Bicycle Co. and their customer service has been negative, even though I am a repeat customer due to their proximity and my honest appreciation for their products that have served me well for years now.

I was actually considering a State (among a few other brands, but State was strongly in the mix) but ultimately decided that if I could save up $500 to spend on a bike I could just as easily save up another $300 and get the bike I really wanted. The only issue i had with state is that they wouldnt guarantee the warranty if the bike is not built by a professional bicycle shop. the bike comes complete and i have worked in a bike shop in my past and know how to build and check over a bike. without a paid receipt for a bike build they cant issue the warranty. so in the end i believed i was getting a warranty when i actually was not. i chose to save the 200$ my bike shop wanted and did the work myself. i have the Undefeated 2 and the other things you mentioned were not an issue on my build at all.

@@alienrefugee51 Exactly! No way does a bike shop have any right to charge you $200 to build an already partially assembled fixed gear bike! It should be the same price as a BMX assembly, around $50-75. They don't have to assemble anything that has to do with gears, and that's what keeps the assembly price way down.

It looks like theyve taken some of these criticisms to heart since this video was posted. I bought a Core-Line "Wulf" 3/4 weeks ago and I'm mostly happy with it. At least the dropouts are spaced correctly. I did have to go over the bike and make sure everything was greased and secured. Especially the lock rings. But you want to do that with any bike you're pulling out of a box. Some kid making minimum wage put it in there. My only major gripes are with the gear ratio and the tires. The tires it comes with are not robust enough for my city (Baltimore) and the 44-16 gear ratio means you're only skidding on 2 spots (4 if you're ambi-footed). Also the saddle suuuuuucks hair butthole. I'll also aat the bullhorn handle bar geometry is perfect. I've always preferred sawing the bottoms off of drop bars to buying the purpose made bullhorns because they just never feel right. These are on exception. I'm going to be putting a bmx drive train on it with a 47-17 grar ratio (and slightly shorter cracks so my tire doesnt rub my toe when i track stand). And I'm putting some kevlar lined tires on it so I dont blow a flat everry other day. I had a couple of bad accidents year back that spooked me enough that I had to stop riding due to anxiety. This has been a good bike to ease back into the life. I'm definitely not sorry I spent the money.

Novatec "lo-pro" wheelset are trash, especially if you're a messenger, and they can go out of true within a week. The frameset can be easily dent too. I wouldn't get another State again.

I purchased an UNDEFEATED bicycle from the STATE RIDESHOP in Tempe, Arizona in October 2017. Its performance and quality are OUTSTANDING !!! When its time to sprint, it is up to speed in no time. The aluminum frame has a great road feel and the steering is quite responsive. I am anxious and enjoy my 5.2 miles to and from work each workday. NO PROBLEMS HERE .....Enjoy Life...Be Well !!!

For sure Undefeated 2, by far the best bike for the money. Also the lightest prebuilt bike I've seen or have heard of. No matter which bike store I enter the employees are shocked by the weight. Haven't meet anyone with a lighter bike yet!

We all appreciate your honest review. We can see you're not being a fixie-foo-elitist-snobist. This is the reality of the company. Thank you for the WARNING. It is even more so painful because it will be beginners who buy this bike and they won't even be able to see the terrible problems like you can. They will probably think this is normal for bikes and that bikes are overpriced, really suck and then just give up on cycling all together. After selling the POS for a huge loss in $. This is a mockery of cycling culture :( Should we boycott State and other companies that do this? I think we should until they get their act together and stop exploiting people with their bikes. I am willing to give them a 2nd chance but there must some serious changes made. I for one am extremely disappointed and angry with State and other like companies who do this to our culture. It has to stop.

You'd think if you were going to send a bike out to be reviewed you'd have someone check it over before it was shipped, then you'd pick these issues up before the reviewer did....

I’m sure they have real measuring rulers & also know you never start measuring from the O inch on Home Depot measuring tapes that have a metal on the tip & is usually shorter. So that’s probably where your 5 mm. went pal.

Just about every bike (State included) says "professional assembly required". I hate to say it, but most people are not capable of properly assembling a bicycle. Even Zach here seems to be confused on how to correct rear spacing and verify the rear stay alignment afterwards. Hubs, Bottom bracket and headset should be greased and properly installed, wheels need to trued and spokes checked for equal tension, etc. The biggest thing you can fault State for here is the packaging, bent bars and dent. Just my 2 cents.
