STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT BY HER MAJESTY, QUEEN ELIZABETH - 1970

(6 Jul 1970) A new session of Parliament is opened by Her Majesty the Queen and the rich ceremonial which is part of Britain's National Heritage. ® Accompanied for the first time at the State Opening by the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh drive to the Palace of Westminster in the Irish State Coach. ® A fanfare announces Her Majesty's entrance into the Royal Gallery and the solemn procession to the Throne begins. In the Chamber of the House of Lords, the sumptuous setting in red and gold is enhanced by the robes of the waiting Peers, Judges, Bishops and Diplomats. ® At Her Majesty's Command, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod goes to summon the Faithful Commons. His way is barred and he knocks three times to gain entry to the Lower House. Then the Speaker, The Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Members of the Commons file into the House of Lords to hear the Queen read her "Gracious Speech from the Throne".

The Commons could be just as rowdy back then as it is now. You just didn't get to see it on TV or hear the audio on radio. Hugh Gaitskill used to get shouted down something rotten during his time as Labour leader in the late 50s and early 60s.

This occurred on Thursday 2nd July 1970, due to the general election being held on Thursday 18th June 1970, which saw the Conservative party win with a decent majority, great surprise. So a state opening had to be held a few weeks after the election, and no November 1970 state opening was held, as it was not needed.

John King Skinner was/is a republican. You may not agree with his views or with his conduct, but he had every right to express them, on his behalf and on behalf of all in the electorate that would agree. (I'm not one of them, I hasten to add.) Sometimes his remarks were silly; at other times, they were astute. Sometimes they actually helped to break the ice and get MPs of all sides into a more joyful mood - and surely the opening of the mother of all Parliaments ought to be a joyous occasion.

Have some respect. Do you know how much this family as given to the world. The English language was preserved because of this family amongst many other things. And England has given many countries across the world government styles law education system rail road network postal services and much more . It seems funny because it's an ancient custom in today's world however its awesome that this family as kept it together for 1500 years and still relevant in their own nation today no other monarchy in the world as this longevity and still hold this level of importance to it's own people and to the commonwealth. The British royal family had to fight off invaders for 1500 years in order to retain the english language and British customs that many countries use and enjoy today .
