I’m Purepecha from the community of Cheran during this year 1940 they also went to my hometown and studied my ancestors but also the government implemented more school but only Spanish they also did it with other smaller purepecha communities who only spoke the language with no knowledge of Spanish. It’s crazy how times of change but our language is still spoken strong 💪🏾 while Spanish is spoken more often than In 1940 purepecha is still the main language in most purepecha communities

What were these boarding schools like back then? In America and Canada the boarding schools for Indians were horrible, abusive places intentionally built to destroy the native tribes' cultures and ultimately destroy the tribes themselves. A lot of the children died in the schools too.

@@eitkoml idk much how they did education back in the day but I’m sure they were just regular schooling, schooling in Mexican indigenous communities pre 1940 back then didn’t exist for some or it was really really bad since many indigenous communities were still either very poor to not afford it or very isolated. Until 1940 where programs to make schooling a thing in these communities.

Full Purepecha my great grandparents didn’t went to school during the time of the video was made they still speak the Language and pass it on to my grandparents who also didn’t went to school however my parents did thus they only speak Spanish with little purepecha it’s crazy how a generation can change things however I learned the language so I could be more connected with my grandparents and their parents that’s what current purepecha communities are doing rn
