Florida is my home and I'm proud of it, as my brethren should. I was born there and I'll be damned if I'm not buried there. The world away from home which I have lived for 8 years is indeed dark and dreary away from the old folks at home (my family). Miss the true four seasons: hurricane season, lovebug season, tourist season, and summer. I live by the motto my father told me, he said "Son, you're American by birth and Floridian by the grace of God." I miss the sweet smells and sounds of outdoor Florida. I miss Fort Lauderdale and the yearly trip west to Tampa. Fins, Gators, Panthers, and Marlins forever!

This is a much better song than the new Florida anthem, which sounds like a typical easy-listening pop tune with cheap, copy-paste lyrics. This song has a beautiful instrumental backing and lyrics that have real meaning, and together they evoke the feeling of Florida that any person living here or just visiting can empathize with. I understand some people take issue with the original lyrics, but it's sad that some still take issue with these revised lyrics and say the song is racist. Just because this song is set in a dark part of our history does not make the song racist, and I would argue that the lyrics actually have the effect of humanizing the narrator, which is counter to the racist narrative.

The writer of this song, Stephen Foster, actually isn't on record for ever being in Florida. He was a Kentuckian. He also wrote "My Old Kentucky Home," the Kentucky state song.
