The city isn't broke. If I got $100 dollars for every time my employer cried broke, I'd be retired. We went five years w/o a contract because they were broke. Wouldn't you know when the IAFF got involved and we sued the city, money magically appeared and got everything we asked for. Lawsuits early and often!

I love when people make a comment about a profession they know absolutely nothing about.

So the department places units out of service for training and medical evaluations. So why do they not have a few units to float everyday to fill in to ensure coverage? Your not paying people overtime to get their medical exams done like other places do. So take the savings you get by doing it all on duty and float a few units around on overtime.

I hope they win. The money is there it’s just being spent irresponsibly.

They’re only suing the innocent taxpayers for personal gain.

Suing because the first due engine was OOS for medical is ridiculous. Not a staffing problem at all.

It’s really not but OK
@dar463210 күн бұрын
This is quite objectively a staffing issue. They said pretty plainly they did not have manpower on scene to make a rescue at the time of the multiple maydays. This was directly a result of the nearby house being without coverage due to the duty crew being sent downtown for medical exams.

Staffing and manpower are intertwined with each other. COme on.

sure is they could still staff another engine company to cover the area. especially Staten Island where fire resources are already limited compared to the other bough's

That's not the city's isue its standard practice to take stations offline for maintenance and training etc the problem is that American firefighters are to aggressive in their tactics if you look at Europe you will see that once everyone is out a defensive tactic is used saving the building isn't worth killing yourself for let it burn saving lives is the only time you should risk your life not for a structure
@professorminstrels64606 күн бұрын
That isn't entirely true what you have said. Our job is to protect both lives and property (where possible). Many times, even if I building is confirmed empty you still have to conduct interior firefighting anyway. If you simply try to fight it defensively from the outside, you will often achieve nothing more than pushing the fire further back through the building. Firefighters in countries such as France and Italy have to be some of the most aggressive firefighters I've ever witnessed. Firefighting in general requires you to be at least a little aggressive Sincerely A UK firefighter

Also not the issue. City is cutting back budgets, closing houses due to no staffing and or thinking they are saving money
@chazman44614 күн бұрын
How do you do that with a 30 story building connected to other buldings?
@t.l.h.89932 күн бұрын
@@professorminstrels6460 but you have also take into account that most european houses have a greater structural Integrity than most american houses, since most european houses have several solid stone walls to carry the weight which means most fires won´t cause the house to collapse. That means it´s not as risky to be aggressive in here as in the US, since US made houses often have less weight carrying structures which in turn significally increases the chances to collapse in the case of a fire and thereby trap a firefighter who´s inside

City officials love to say they "support" firefighters until it's time to pay them or do anything that actually supports them a city near me is going through it right now

Seriously.. FDNY is short staffed ? Doubt it
@carsonoakley45892 күн бұрын
That plus cuts in employment to make up for other city budgets are what’s creating the problem
