I did shadow speaking for most parts of the video. Thank you so much for this amazing channel! I'd love to see more authentic content that involves you being outdoors from time to time, it might be a little more demanding for filming and editing, but I reckon it'll be worth it! Also, this is the first time I've heard of Jervis Bay Territory, and you've got me going "alrighty, that's it, I'm gonna go check out this place when I have a chance visiting Down Under". For the pronumnciation of Canberra, most people don't realise that when the word is not stressed (such as in "Canberra Hospital"), the pronunciation is closer to (kæmbra); yes, thats /m/, not /n/. But when spoken in considered speech, or in a stressed position (such as "I'm in Canberra"), the pronunciation is more likely to have the /n/ (kænbra).

What about the pronunciation of the Australian capital cities eg Brisbane, Melbourne
@mrewan622115 күн бұрын
I'd suggest: /sɪd·nij/ /mɛl·bən/ /bɹɪz·bən/ /pə:θ/ /æ·də·lɛjd/ /həw·bɑːt/ /dɑː·wɪn/ Canberra is formally /kæn·bɹʌ/, but more oftern /kam·bɹʌ/. Note, the only times "r" is heard is after the "b" in Brisbane and in Canb'ra. There is no trace whatsoever of "r" in Melbourne, Perth, Hobart, or Darwin. (Using Dr Geoff Lindsey's transcription for vowels with the exception that I've used [æ] instead of [a]. It's designed for Southern British English, but fits Australian (General) English pretty well.)

You overlooked something very important about South Australia. If you're on about pronunciation, I mean. It is the only state that has an accent that is recognizably distinct from the rest of the country. (Lots of free, middle-class British settlers... and NO convicts!!) The broad 'ah' features predominantly in words where other Australians prefer the clipped 'a'. EG: South Australians say ''bra-ah-nch' for the limb of a tree. The rest of the country says 'branch'. A second feature of the SA accent is the diminished 'l' in words ending in ''lk'. EG: Milk. Crow-Eaters say 'mi-uwk'. On the other hand, SA folk DO say ''South Australia'' with a very definite pronunciation of the 'O' at the start and the 'L' in the penultimate syllable. The rest of the country says ''Uh-Straya''. There's more, but that'll do for now.

Many of the colonies were states well and truly before Federation. Victoria for example achieved statehoid in 1835
@mrewan622115 күн бұрын
Victoria was first settled (from Tasmania) in the early 1800s, although it was still part of New South Wales. The Colony of Victoria was declared in 1835. Self-governent in the 1850s, still as a Colony. Not a state until 1901 as part of federation. Similar for the other colonies (but not settled from Tasmania). South Australia was created as a Province, rather than as a Colony. No states until 1901.

Convicts that caused trouble in Tasmania were sent to Norfolk Island.
@mrewan622115 күн бұрын
Not at all. The first Norfolk Island settlement was relocated to Tasmania between 1804 and 1808. That's why there's a town named New Norfolk. The second NI settlement was the horror, and was a military prison. The third NI settlement is the current one. Troublesome convicts in Tasmania were sent to Macquarie Harbour, on the west coast. NI was first settled (also in 1788) because the belief was that the tall trees (Norfolk Island Pines) would make good masts for sailing ships (they didn't because they're soft wood), because there were huge fields of flax for sails (there weren't), and tbecuae vegetables could be grown for the Port Jackson settlement (they couldn't). Masts and flax had come from the south of France, but that was becoming a troubled area, and the French Revolution was just one year later, in 1789.

Na mate, you got it right about Tasmania. We are all related, and we are all bogans 😂😂😂
@mrewan622115 күн бұрын
We are probably less related than on the mainland states. Tasmanian convicts came from all over the place, wheras the mainlander free settlers are more likely to have arrived in buches from similar areas. I have at least 20 convict ancestors, and none from anywhere near any other (apart from two born on Norfolk Island, into two very unrelated families). And .. because many were prisoners, good records were kept (you have to know how much food to get to feed everyone). So we can now trace back some distance to see if there's any relationship at all. Mainlanders are unlikely to know who their great-great-grandparents were. Caveat: Can't speak for Oatlands.
