Chief was ALWAYS 100% class. A great singer, a great songwriter, and will always be remembered as the ultimate Statesmen bass singer.

The Big Chief was a bass singer who could actually sing. He was versatile and had the ability to carry a quartet when called upon. IMHO Sumner and Younce and all the rest never measured up to him. He was only 50 years old when he passed away.

Tom Jones tells the story that whenever he and Elvis were in Las Vegas at the same time, Elvis would invite him up to the suite to sing Gospel music with the Quartets and others and this is one of the songs that Tom says Elvis would have everyone sing over and over! Finally, Tom would say: "Elvis I have to get some sleep" and Elvis would launch into Why Me Lord and they were off again. Tom says he often sang the song as he was walking out the door in the early hours to get some sleep!

I think you have that wrong on Tom Jones. I think it was Jake Hess or Hovie Lister.

@@larrywestberry1111 I’m not wrong at all. I don’t think Tom ever met Jake or Hovie.

As I listen to this number being done from a long past performance, I am reminded that back then you got to here the singers with nothing but a piano. Now days their kind of music is more ge-tars drums, etc. that way the singers voices can be hidden and we never know how good or in most cases how average they are.

Lendo a biografia do Big chef fiquei surpreso em saber que faleceu antes dos 60 anos, embora pareça ser mais velho. Morreu de infarto antes da apresentação

I think it could be Gary Timbs.

Big Chief was the best, and you can see why he was idolized (and copied!) by Elvis!!!
