I remember watching this during my childhood. I didn't know what racism was until now.

"He's broken his father's cycle of intolerance" this line right here is one of the reasons why static shock was one of the best cartoons to have aired on TVJ

This is totally a freaking early 2000's cartoon dealing with racism and gang violence there was even an episode where a kid gets bullied so badly he gets a gun these are serious topics that should be talked about nowadays but everyone is so sensitive cartoons can't do that anymore

Can we talk about how Virgil gave Richies' father a second chance after dinner? He was totally willing to let the hating rap thing slide as an old person thing till Richies' dad got real racist. Virgil's too good man

This hits so much harder as an adult. As a white kid who grew up with all black friends, it never fails to hurt my heart hearing the fathers lines in this show.

I remember being a small kid watching this and I was so confused by what he meant by “his kind” and I didn’t know what racism was because I was too young so I always thought that the father had a problem with statics hair, never did I think it was his color.

This show was revolutionary for stepping out of the shadows and actually addressing issues like this. I never grew up on Static Shock, but the way it handled issues like Racism, Bullying, Gun Violence, and hell, even Dyslexia, were realistic. Honestly a shame that trash is the only thing played on television these days. We need more shows like this.

All this time, I could've blamed rap music for my staying out past cerfew. Who knew.

They actually-- they actually tackled this in the show? I thought it'd be implied.

Totally implied that Richie’s dad also treats his wife like shit. She’s so submissive with him around.

The great thing about this moment is that Vergil never blamed Richie or look downed on him for a second after learning this. He was hurt but he knew his friend cared for him. Something like this can't break relationships.

The sad part is kids like Richie are very rare. They're usually indoctrinated by their parent's bigotry that they sometimes don't break out of it until they're older... if they break out of it at all

This show was iconic back in its time, it was very popular. This show covered a lot of social issues that we are dealing with to this day, it wasn't just a superhero cartoon, it was a learning experience and a show about life lessons

It’s sweet to see that Static’s dad told him to be a good friend to Richie after hearing Static out about Richie’s dad not rubbing off on him. True Empathy.

I love the way Teen Titans addressed racism too.

I feel bad for Richie’s mom. Unfortunately a lot of women get stuck in those kind of relationships because they feel they can “fix” the man, because his other good qualities stick out. I’m glad her son grows up to be a good guy despite everything.
