Great video Julian ignore the comments about your tunnel infill I have seen quite a few filled in exactly as you have modelled. Your attention to detail is unquestionable.

Hi Julian. Another great video, and in relation to the era that you're basing your layout on, I think that you've got it spot on about the tunnel infill. Bricking them up was a later idea, I think. Top tip about using the tape and the pencil, just looking at your mock-up, the distance from the edge to the carriage steps looks about right, there are loads of signs at heritage railways informing you of the height of the platforms and the distance away, no health and safety do gooders when the railways were first built, now life is all so sterile. I'm looking forward to the next update already.

Hi Julian 👍 enjoyable update and the platforms are looking good. Just before you commit to clearances the issues I have had is with the overhang on the front end of large steam locomotives and also the overhang on a Hornby class 50. It might be worth running one of them first 👍

Good advice to watch out for the 08's when building platforms. In my experience the Hornby 08's are worse than the bachmann for sticking out and clashing. Had to modify my platforms with a rabbit plane. Not something I envisaged doing after having no problem with any other rolling stock. Layouts looking great. Atb Graham 🙂 👍

Hi Julian. Nice work on the new platforms. Retaining wall for the bay platform and parking area for the main platform: I agree these will need a little adjustment. The road leading to the parking area not so much.

Glad to see you have checked your clearances with a Class 08 as to my surprise I found the running gear sticks out further than you realise on straight platforms let alone curves! My platforms are build to clear full length Mark 3 coaches so a bit more “gappy” than yours! However if you have any ex GWR steam locos check with them too as the pistons on my Hall and King are even wider than the 08!

They also overhang quite a bit for platforms on the outside of the curve - general rule: longest coach (middle) for inside platforms; longest steam locomotive (front overhang) for outside platforms.

Huge improvement, Julian, lovely wide platforms - are you considering a new location for the footbridge? I completely agree that it's fine for the car park etc to not be aligned with the platform - as you no doubt noticed during your visit, almost everything here in the UK is a little bit wonky. Also, the tunnel backfill looks bob on to me, seen quite a few done like that. I think the drop in the level of the backfill over time is probably due to water slowly shifting some of the material. Very wet places, tunnels!

If you were modelling Western Region, then in places the track will widen through stations, where the track bed was built at 7' guage, but replaced with standard guage. Sometimes rebuilding the platforms wasn't considered - and occasionally you might get a central passing track.... but then there's no helpful suggestion for non-parallel running lines!!

Great vid as usual, why not realign the centre track to the original station platform line, the bay could then come back a little too so thats parallel as well. Just an observation.

ironically i think some layouts that have everything too parallel look less realistic. some curves ans misalignment breaks up the straight lines. the new platforms will be great though for stopping longer trains at the station.

Hi Julian, sorry to be throwing a negative, but why would the tunnel entrances be back filled? In the real world, it would be walled up and left. Filling the area in might look better, but the railway company are more interested in cost. I live in Nottingham UK and the old Central mainline tunnels are still on show in the city. They are all bricked up and left. Avidly watched your channel for last eighteen months or so, the viaduct is awesome. But find the station extention and old disused line not making sense. If the station platforms were extended after the closure, the platforms extensions would be constructed in a different way. Just food for thought.

I have to disagree with you, having lived in Nottingham and later moved to the East Coast in most urban areas yes the tunnels are bricked up but in rural areas most of the tunnels are infilled either by local councils or farmers, therefore I agree with Julians choice to infill as it backs onto a rural area of the layout, however I personally wouldn't have infilled it as much as I would have liked to have seen some old track bed leading to it, but everyone is different and everything is open to opinions. That said it's still a fantastic layout.

It could have been backfilled after a tunnel collapse? Maybe the building of the reservoir on the top of the hill caused subsidence and they had to fill in the tunnel for safety reasons?

Never saw what happened with the penmanshiel tunnel, after the diversion was put in on the ECML!?? IT WAS BACKFILLED!
