If you were modelling Western Region, then in places the track will widen through stations, where the track bed was built at 7' guage, but replaced with standard guage. Sometimes rebuilding the platforms wasn't considered - and occasionally you might get a central passing track.... but then there's no helpful suggestion for non-parallel running lines!!

All good Julian. How are passengers to access the island platform, overbridge or subway?👍

Hi Julian, as always a great video! Did you also check the clearances when running a coach through all of the points near the platforms? Cheers from the Netherlands. Jasper

Hi Julian. Another great video, and in relation to the era that you're basing your layout on, I think that you've got it spot on about the tunnel infill. Bricking them up was a later idea, I think. Top tip about using the tape and the pencil, just looking at your mock-up, the distance from the edge to the carriage steps looks about right, there are loads of signs at heritage railways informing you of the height of the platforms and the distance away, no health and safety do gooders when the railways were first built, now life is all so sterile. I'm looking forward to the next update already.

Huge improvement, Julian, lovely wide platforms - are you considering a new locarion for the footbridge? I completely agree that it's fine for the car park etc not to be aligned with the platform, as you no doubt noticed during your visit, almost everything here in the UK is a little bit wonky. Also, the tunnel backfill looks bob on to me, seen quite a few done like that. I think the drop in the level of the backfill over time is probably due to water slowly shifting some of the material. Very wet places, tunnels!

Great video Julian ignore the comments about your tunnel infill I have seen quite a few filled in exactly as you have modelled. Your attention to detail is unquestionable.

Looked brilliant once you removed the bridge, but I have to say I'm not sure about filling in the whole of that cutting. I've never used that expanding foam, so interesting to see how uncontrollable it is!

Glad to see you have checked your clearances with a Class 08 as to my surprise I found the running gear sticks out further than you realise on straight platforms let alone curves! My platforms are build to clear full length Mark 3 coaches so a bit more “gappy” than yours! However if you have any ex GWR steam locos check with them too as the pistons on my Hall and King are even wider than the 08!
@neilharbott8394

They also overhang quite a bit for platforms on the outside of the curve - general rule: longest coach (middle) for inside platforms; longest steam locomotive (front overhang) for outside platforms.

Hi Julian. Nice work on the new platforms. Retaining wall for the bay platform and parking area for the main platform: I agree these will need a little adjustment. The road leading to the parking area not so much.

ironically i think some layouts that have everything too parallel look less realistic. some curves ans misalignment breaks up the straight lines. the new platforms will be great though for stopping longer trains at the station.

Hi Julian, sorry to be throwing a negative, but why would the tunnel entrances be back filled? In the real world, it would be walled up and left. Filling the area in might look better, but the railway company are more interested in cost. I live in Nottingham UK and the old Central mainline tunnels are still on show in the city. They are all bricked up and left. Avidly watched your channel for last eighteen months or so, the viaduct is awesome. But find the station extention and old disused line not making sense. If the station platforms were extended after the closure, the platforms extensions would be constructed in a different way. Just food for thought.
@Darrenh84
@Darrenh84 3 күн бұрын
I have to disagree with you, having lived in Nottingham and later moved to the East Coast in most urban areas yes the tunnels are bricked up but in rural areas most of the tunnels are infilled either by local councils or farmers, therefore I agree with Julians choice to infill as it backs onto a rural area of the layout, however I personally wouldn't have infilled it as much as I would have liked to have seen some old track bed leading to it, but everyone is different and everything is open to opinions. That said it's still a fantastic layout.
@GrawlysLair

It could have been backfilled after a tunnel collapse? Maybe the building of the reservoir on the top of the hill caused subsidence and they had to fill in the tunnel for safety reasons?

The problem with derailing is bad track work not the loco, the model railway club I am a member of, use the Deltic to check track work for the correct alignment. The coupling work well under any load.

Hi Julian 👍 enjoyable update and the platforms are looking good. Just before you commit to clearances the issues I have had is with the overhang on the front end of large steam locomotives and also the overhang on a Hornby class 50. It might be worth running one of them first 👍

Good advice to watch out for the 08's when building platforms. In my experience the Hornby 08's are worse than the bachmann for sticking out and clashing. Had to modify my platforms with a rabbit plane. Not something I envisaged doing after having no problem with any other rolling stock. Layouts looking great. Atb Graham 🙂 👍

Great vid as usual, why not realign the centre track to the original station platform line, the bay could then come back a little too so thats parallel as well. Just an observation.

I’ve taken to updating the DCC address from a DCC controller, then checking DCC address in the Hornby app. This works setting the address using Gaugemaster Prodigy Express, Digikeijs DR 5000/ YaMoRC 7010 or JMRI decoder pro via a SPROG3. Check the CV settings on the CV tab of the loco entry in the HM7000 app (may require the Bluetooth field to be toggled). If CV 17 shows value 192 and CV 18 shows value of 100, then the DCC long address is the default long address of 100.

It's your world, and you're It's maker... but having lived through my now thirty-something nephew's childhood and the replaying of Henry refusing to leave the tunnel ad infinitum it might've been interesting to see the tunnel portal with a green engine lurking behind a red-brick wall. You could've used a spare engine body to avoid wasting a working engine.

Just about to start my new layout and saw this video, thanks for the experiment, always wondered about this, the higher priced PVA seams to work the best..which I have, so will press on using this.. Just a thought on a " sealer for this and a great for " layering " is cheap hair spray, I used this on my last exhibition layout and with it constantly being moved and bumped about, this worked a treat, all my grass and trees/bushes stayed put..! thanks for this great informative video..😊

Hi Julian. Sorry, but I don't understand the philosophy of what you're trying to achieve with the expanding foam. Perhaps it will become clearer when you come back to it. At the moment, it looks as though there has been an avalanche (snow, or soil?). In a real-life situation, I would have expected the project to have been completed at the blocking of the tunnel portal.
@andrewstephenson3594

Julian, interesting video. implanting the new tunnel portal at a different angle seems much more natural - the curve off the point would have been a bigger radius. As to re-using the foam trigger and tube again, in the past I have been able to clean them out once the foam is well set as the foam doesn't stick to the tube or trigger.

Eyup Jules, looks good so far But a brief word about platform length - in the 'real world' trains were and are often 'too long' for some platforms, not just halts either! Wasn't uncommon to see two or three coaches "hanging out the back" of the station - or, signals permitting, the loco out of the platform - especially on a branch line. This is something I've purposely built into one of my stations, it's only big enough for two coaches, by design! BUT You seem to have a good plan in place mate, look forward to the development! Cheers!
