Context is everything, so I would be careful using one formula over the other. Most of the time we are working with a sample taken from a much larger population.

So does the square on the lower case sigma or the s mean anything?

Yes. The lowercase sigma, and the s stand for the deviation of the population or sample respectively. These are also a measure of spread in a sense, but the square makes sure that the value is always positive. HELP PLEASEE, I need to find variance of points but there’s two sets of numbers (x and y) and the x and the y points match up with a graph but from the example, each (x,y) is a shot from a bullet. The four Xs and Ys make 4 points and I need the variance but I can only do the ys or the xs I don’t know how to do both in one please I’m begging please please please please someone help pleasee:(
