Also I forgot to mention in the video, and I may make another video about this, but going test-optional can be a great option as well!! Standardized testing is highly biased in terms of race, socio-economic status, gender, native language, etc, and as such isn't a proper reflection of any student's ability to succeed. While for some students, adding in an SAT or ACT score can be another data point that helps them look favorable to colleges, if you feel that you aren't presenting your best self through your test score, you don't have to feel pressured to send it in. Most colleges aren't requiring you to send your scores in, and if they say they are test-blind, they meant it!

Hi Ava, My son and I just toured Brown and fell in love with the school. He is a sophomore with a weighted GPA of 4.27. He feels like he doesn’t have a chance at getting in since acceptance rate this year was 5%. Any encouraging words, advice I could pass on to him ? Are you still proud reading essays ? I have a 4.5 weighted gpa 2nd semester for my 9th grade year (just finished 9 th grade), is this good or bad? Ik C19 was rly hard on me and when I was online I did way worse than in person so I can definitely do better next year

I can't say for certain, since every school does weighted gpa slightly differently, but that definitely seems like a really good gpa!! More than that, freshman year is an adjustment time where you are still transitioning to high school - if there's points where you stumble, or even just feel like you personally can do a bit better, that's okay, you have three more years to learn and grow :))

I'm afraid I can't say for sure if going test-optional or not gives students a competitive edge! I personally chose to submit my test scores, and I'm not sure how my application was weighed in comparison to students who decided not to do so. I do know that many schools have chosen to go either Test-Optional or Test-Blind. GPA is tricky since it can vary based on how difficult your classes are. However, being ranked 3rd in your class is absolutely fantastic!! Applying to schools with low acceptance rates is a gamble for everybody, and it's definitely important to apply to some safety schools as well as reaches. But you definitely seem to have a shot at the reach schools that you're interested in!

That's a good question but definitely a tricky one! When I was deciding on a college, my top 3 were Brown, Yale, and the University of Rochester. So if I didn't get accepted to Brown, I probably would have gone to one of the other two. They both had different aspects that drew me in: Yale's biggest draw was its History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health major, while the University of Rochester's biggest draw was its BS/MD program!
