For the smoke coming from the exhaust, try one thing, floor it in neutral, if the smoke shows up when u go off throttle, valve guides/seals are worn, because when you go off throttle, the vaccum comes back and sucks in the oil into the intake through the valve seals/guides/stems, hope i helpd u 😅

One thing I’ve done before to narrow down where the leak is, is to hook up a leak down tester. You can then stick a bit of heater hose or something into the O2 sensor hole (check if an exhaust valve is bent / broken), a fuel injector hole (or any intake manifold hole), or the dipstick tube. Gives you a pretty quick idea of whether it’s head or bottom end. You will always get some leakage past the rings so that’s a bit subjective but there should never be any leakage past the valves when that cylinder is at TDC or BDC.
@StavTech8 ай бұрын
Didn’t matter where the leak is, it had to come apart regardless

Great to see it on the road again and very good how easy it is to work on! Just wondering if you will need the map adjusted for the slight change in compression ratio now?
@StavTech9 ай бұрын
Good question. I’m going with “yes a bit, but not much” but that’s the beauty of having the Ignitron, I’ll just go for a drive and datalog it and see if anything needs changing. Certainly drives identically so far r
@Brad24v9 ай бұрын
@@StavTech cool! I have just fitted Link engine management to my Sapphire Cossie this week and I'm trying to get a very basic understanding of how to use it. It's mind boggling at first glance 😂 I'll leave the main stuff to a mapper but I'll do some research and try and understand some of the basics for myself.
@mcgherkinstudios9 ай бұрын
I'd be really interested to see the technical info on how you have antilag setup. I know you can do pretty well with throttle bypass, but I always thought you couldn't achieve much in the way of boost off throttle without either the engine RPM climbing out of gear, or the car 'pushing' as engine braking is removed, even with ignition retardation (this being the advantage of fresh air bypass as I understood it, you aren't needing to pass the whole air charge through the engine so it increases engine braking). So to see you pretty easily sitting at idle making 15psi of boost without the revs going out of control is very impressive to say the least. That would be very handy for hillclimbing for me. Do you log EGT? Would be interesting to see how bananas it gets. Great work on the engine rebuild. Rings are a very simple fix (especially when you have a full set of pistons and rings ready to go!), but a right faff to get to! Smacked back together and sent. Top man.
@StavTech9 ай бұрын
That’s just the usual complete bullshit companies selling you valves and manifolds want you to think. I used to have 29psi off throttle on my old Cossie like this, my Subaru had 15psi at basically idle using the stock ISCV, and 99% of Rallycross supercars didn’t use fresh air antilag, purely throttle bypass, despite all the boost all the time. Don’t get me wrong, fresh air is technically better for both potential and for reliability, but what I use is more than enough for 99% of cars, just the misinformation and BS due to people selling stuff and people just not having a clue makes people think otherwise.
@mcgherkinstudios9 ай бұрын
@@StavTech Yup, I’ve not run antilag myself before so can only go off what the plentiful (wrong) information out there is. That’s why I like this channel - because what’s said is right and if people don’t believe it they can just keep watching and see you prove it. Never too old to learn!
@StavTech9 ай бұрын
@@mcgherkinstudios in fact I learnt something new today- WRC cars haven’t used fresh air antilag since 2017, purely throttle bypass
@JudsonBrundage-cf5qe9 ай бұрын
I’d love to see a more in depth anti lag video. I remember reading late 2000s F1 cars that had a similar strategy, where off throttle tq management was retarding timing but hanging the throttle open (IIRC like 70%) for the blown diffuser, just using the engine as an air pump. Obviously cars weren’t turbocharged, but sounds like a similar strategy for different reasons

I have a C30 with the same engine/chassis. Great car for a FWD, mega tuning platform if done right, which they rarely are. Currently putting together a HY35 build that will make torque for days at most of the RPM range and hopefully just tap out at 500bhp. MR2 is an awesome platform with the 1.8t though. Super quick, way easier to work on, RWD, Stav's right, it's a much better/cheaper way of going fast and obviously going sideways too. But if we all just went the obviously better route life would be boring!

@StavTech9 ай бұрын
Muffler so big as I don’t like loud exhausts when just driving around normally. Smaller pipe is from the external wastegate so only open at full boost. And yeah it was incredible the thing even ran at all, never mind lasted a good while like this! So lucky it didn’t wreck the bores too.
