Horror movies are usually targeted at a teen to early adult demographic. With this in mind, studios will often incorporate things that are seen as popular in that demographic, even if they have no idea what in the hell they are. In 2006, it was finally figured out the average "gamer" was indeed older than 12, and was in fact the late teens early 20s demographic. With this in mind, we got Stay Alive.. and... sweet holy fuck. That's it, really. Sweet, holy fuck.

October's death was probably the most badass in the movie, though. I mean...she looked tough while staring down a murder ghost...so it's a good scene for her...and it saved Sophia Bush from being in the rest of the movie.

Trivia moment before my own rage on this movie. This was the last movie shot in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina. Now the rage. WHY THE FUCK DID THEY USE ELIZABETH BATHORY? I'm from New Orleans, we have a very famous local ghost story based on real history of Madame LaLaurie (spelling may be off) LaLaurie's house was on fire and the firemen arrived and she reused to let them into part of the house, they broke it down and found slaves who were chained in place, who supposedly had bones broken and reset in odd angles. It was so horrible that in the pre-civil war south this white woman had a LYNCH MOB come after her for how badly she was treating her slaves. She escaped, but there are rumors she returned, and that to this day she still haunts her old mansion on Royal street. Now, how factual some of this is is of course questionable, but WE HAVE OUR OWN RICH WOMAN WHO TORTURES PEOPLE LEGEND! Why the fuck use Elizabeth Bathory? When the city basically hands you some badass local legend, use the fucking local legends! Sorry for that, but fucking up New Orleans stuff is my version of Deckers fucking up game stuff, it's an insta-rage button. Which also means I have to inform Decker he got a gamer thing wrong, since the movie was shot pre-Hurricane Katrina that means it was shot pre-360 & PS3. Both were released in the months after Katrina. Okay, on a happier note. Sophia Bush is awesome and did some charity work here after both Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. Got to like a celeb who actually tries to use her fame for good causes.

The whole discussion about Silent Hill 4 is actually referring to a boss in Silent Hill 1 where if you go into the boss room with no ammo the boss will kill itself after a short while because you can't kill it in the traditional manner by shooting it in the face. This however does not work if you do have the Hyperblaster (yes it is real) because it has unlimited ammo. Too bad you can't drop shit in that game, so if you pick that weapon up you can't do that method to beat/cheese the boss.

Decker Shado I was about to say "tbf, 4 may not have been released yet" but then I googled it and it came out in 2004, two years before this movie... Without looking up production schedules, it's POSSIBLE that scene was filmed when SH4 had either not yet been released in the west or was brand new, but... I wouldn't count on it.

7:45 no, they were trying to reference Silent Hill 1 and how its final boss (Incubus/Incubator) would kill itself if you had no ammo and avoided its lightning attacks a couple of times because you need ammo to defeat it. The hyper blaster was a cheat code weapon, and if you had that, the boss wouldn’t kill itself because the hyper blaster has unlimited ammo. However you could not drop any items in the first Silent Hill game; you could drop items in Silent Hill 4 but there is no hyper blaster cheat code in that game, and Walter Sullivan is not as forgiving as Incubus/Incubator and won’t just kill himself. The writers were going to reference Silent Hill 1, but at the time the most recent game in the franchise the potential audience would be familiar with would be Silent Hill 4. It’s just two botched references in one.

The biggest problem with this movie is executive meddling. The studio didn't give the filmmakers money to finish certain death scenes, they cut out 10 minutes of footage that go into detail about the game's origin. Yes they get some things wrong about games (like the silent hill thing) but they get a lot of things right.

Actually as a gamer and I'm somebody who's done this research there is a secret ending in one of the Silent Hills which involves you dropping all the ammo and then switching to each gun firing it at the boss to show that you have no ammo in the boss just up and kills itself which leads to one of the endings quote a secret ending but due to walkthroughs yeah that doesn't work anymore.

Stay alive is a guilty pleasure of mine, and honestly has some good concepts, and story elements that I would not mind seeing revisited. I could go for seeing them either remake stay alive an adapt it to suite the style, and correct alot fo the issues it has, or even just see them make a new movie that uses alot of similar aspects of the movie init. I agree that honestly spending more time in the game the characters would have been nice, such as that the day scenes are mostly them dealing with seeing elements of the game in the real world, while the nights are them exploring the game world an maybe seeing thigns that give them a sense of having experinces what was happening like earlier in the day. I agree that showing how they die in the game first does take alot of the effect out of showing it in the real world, but if they had done it that people went missing first, with the police looking for missing people it could have been interesting element. Even more if the missing people are found by the group in the game at times, or they have to find the missing group-mates in the game world to gain the needed items, which than causes that dead character to appear int he world an be found.

This is a great movie. Some scenes really scared the hell out of me and one of those scenes in particular that nearly caused me to piss myself is near the end when Hutch and Abigail were exploring the underground "tunnels" and they look back and saw all of those little girls chasing them. I don't know man, there is something about the way they move and crawl around that I find absolutely terrifying. It is a very underrated horror flick in my opinion. Sure, it has some flaws here and there but that applies to all movies.

It sounds like they mixed up silent hill 1,3 and 4. If you show the female boss in one you have no ammo by pulling up each weapon the boss dies on its own, in silent hill three you get the hyper blast (but it doesn’t have unlimited ammo) and in silent four it’s only one that allows you to “dump” items in your apartment but it doesn’t have the hyper blast, the enemy is male, and it doesn’t have the trick from one that you show you don’t have ammo so boss dies from one.

I remember this movie. There was some thing to like, and like you said the concept is good. However, there's obviously some glaring issues with understanding of how video games work and the people who play them. My biggest issue when I first saw this (other than it not being scary) was how it was all wrapped up. How did a ghost develop a video game? Not to mention, one that old? Yes, it's a movie and I can suspend my belief, but that seemed odd... the set up for this movie was half assed and its such a shame because I like the idea. Also there's a deleted scene with October further explaining Erzebet Bathory. Granted its still fictionalized, but it would've given so more understanding to the character. Always glad to see your reviews up Decker :)

The Ghost didn't set up the game. The video game creator lives on guruge plantation and took Elizabeth Bathory's diary. Made a video game out of it. The pray in the game that they had to save was, the proper text or spell to summon her spirit. I'm guessing that since he lived on the plantation, and mentioned how he couldn't get the story of Elizabeth Bathory out of his head.

7:20 i think in silent hill 1 if you find all the u.f.o. sighting spots and get the end where Harry is abducted by aliens you start with the alien gun in the next playthrough that is weak as shit and i think aside from making weird sounds when shooting also has unlimited ammo or i just forgot the details was a long time i played that one

Actually in Silent Hill 4 if you did not have any ammo or weapons the final boss would automatically be defeated but you would get a bad ending for it . I don't know anything about the super Blaster but I do know about that ending

For those who don't know, they're actually talking about the first game which, yes, does have the Hyper Blaster and it does have infinite ammo/. However, you have to finish the game five times to get it. By which point, you should already know that the final boss will die on its own

I loved this movie besides the lighting and blurry shots and inaccurate silent hill reference. I geeked over the fatal frame reference. The gameplay for the game in the movie looks like some tablet games like Dark Meadow.

programming your character to flip a mirror isn't that hard really, as long as you have the animation for it. if you don't, then yeah, good luck. if you're using just mirror in front of you without the hand animation, that's easier, just apply a rotation on a button press. the reflections are a pain in the ass. not that they're hard or impossible, most recent engines can do it, thing is, it'll turn your gpu into charcoal if you try doing it in real time. that's the one reason you don't see games applying these at all. too performance expensive.

I guess the reason why they talk about Silent Hill 4 with an inaccurate gameplay tip which originates from Silent Hill 1 is because SH4 was the most recent entry in the franchise at the time and thus made an incorrect statement by mistake (it IS a strategy from the earlier game, sure, but they could at least have double-checked first)
